“Uniqueness of my seogak comes from colors and sculptural effect”
Wood letter carving artist Park Seo-hyeong

Park was influenced by his carpenter grandfather and his father who loved Chinese study. He majored in design but changed his course to ‘seogak’ – wood letter carving – when he met Yoon Hwan-su from whom he started to learn the basics of calligraphy and wood letter carving. “Chinese characters and calligraphy were indispensable parts of seogak. I think it is not much to say that I’m who I am today thanks to Yoon” remembers back Park. “The only drawback of calligraphy for me was that it was limited to 2 dimensional. Seogak is done on the surface of the wood with 3 dimensional ups and downs and curves which I see as the charm of the art.” The uniqueness of Park when compared to other seogak artists comes from his taste for modern elements combined with traditional methods; he added colors and decorations and gave more focus on its sculptural value over just wood letter carving. In other words, he came to see the seogak’s limited three dimensional on the surface of the wood and thus tried to expand the scope beyond to the level of sculpture. “I spend a lot of time to shape my ideas with particular interest in division of space, which method I use and what kind of materials. Naturally, it takes a long time to complete a work.” Park has walked as a seogak artist for 14 years ever since he met Yoon. “The destiny of woods depends on where we use them. They are everywhere and can make fire to heat up or burn things up. But they become alive when we put a series of shapes with a carving knife.” His representative work ‘Jeong Joong Dong’, for example, emphasizes its unique color in the carved letters as they are filled with melted bronze and many visitors showed a close look and interest at an exhibition for his uniqueness. Meanwhile, he is a member of the Deulmusae Gak Club, Yoon’s pupils’ club established in 2004 in order to hold club exhibition once a year. This year marks its 14th anniversary and Park wishes to have a solo exhibition alongside if occasion allows.
