“Lee is a living witness of Korean art and master of bank note portrait painting”

Lee surprised the Korean art world by completing a portrait of Yi I used for a bank note at the age of 37, the youngest in the field. Coincidentally, he completed a portrait of Yi I’s mother Sin Saimdang used for another bank note after 37 years. In fact, he made his debut at the National Art Exhibition aged 24 as a recommended artist after which he received Silver Certificate of Merit for participating in the 4.19 Revolution. He is also credited for valuing the cultural assets of Goguryeo, studying traditional portrait painting methods (Yookrimoon and Bukchae), publishing academic papers (‘Goguryeo Mural on Materials Side’ and ‘Twin Column Tomb Mural Shop Drawing’) which were listed in 33 excellent papers of ‘Encyclopedia of Korean Culture’ in 1972, and becoming the first Dokdo artist whose works are housed in the Dokdo Museum Seoul and Dokdo Museum Ulleungdo. He served as a judge of the National Art Exhibition and an examiner of the National Standard for Portraits of Historical Figures. He held an installation exhibition by an invitation of the French Ministry of Culture in 1997 which attracted around 1.27 million viewers worldwide and 4 times invitational exhibitions themed on ‘Korean Paper Rear Lighting’ at the Louvre; he was offered a permanent display of the work but accepted only on the condition to return ‘The Joseon Uigwe’ and ‘Print Jikji’ back to Korea. He is an ardent spreader of excellence of Korean printing and paper technique which have unique 3:1 golden ratio and emphasizes that the variability and installation-friendliness of Korean paper doors are the foundation of modern installation art. His ‘Culture Land Theory’ brought him to an opportunity to study ancient tombs in North Korea on the invitation of the chairman of the Asia Pacific Peace Committee in 1999 and he also initiated ‘Jingyeong Theory’ and ‘Wonhyeongsang’. It is notable that he has drawn around 600 pictures relating to Dokdo since 1977 and is the one who organized the South-North Korea Joint Exhibition for Dokdo. He served as the director of the Seoul National University Museum and organized a number of big exhibitions themed on Goguryeo, Dokdo, Balhae and Jang Seung-eop. When the Museum of Art Seoul National University was completed on the design of Rem Koolhaas and by the support of Samsung Corporation, he served as the first chief curator. However, his versatility not only shined in art but also in essay; he wrote ‘Opening Windows of Atelier’ and ‘Pine Wind, Ink Smell’. On 25 March, Lee dedicated his 18 martyr’s paintings to the Martyr’s Museum located in Sin-ri Shrine, Hapdeok-eup, Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do. He was baptized 20 years ago at Hyehwadong Catholic Church when he lost second daughter from which he has drawn numerous religious paintings. When asked about New Year’s plan, he said that he would keep promoting Korea’s valuable history and culture through art and spreading them to the world.
