누구나 손쉽게 즐기는 식용곤충 브랜드, ‘Invigor’ 런칭으로 주목
식량은 인류의 생존을 위해 필수불가결한 요소다. 그러나 최근 육류단백질 의존에 따른 생태계 파괴, 공장식 축산 및 항생제 남용, GMO 식품에 대한 우려 등 식량이 처한 위기는 점차 심화되는 추세다. 유엔식량농업기구(FAO)에 따르면 오는 2050년에는 90억에 달하는 세계 인구 중 약 20%가 기아 수준의 식량난을 겪을 것이라 전망하기도 했다. 즉, 인구 증가로 인한 식량자원 고갈에 맞서는 동시에 건강하고 영양 많은 먹거리의 확보까지 함께 해결해야만 하는 과제가 현대 인류에게 부여된 것이다. 
농업회사법인 ㈜디앤이이노베이션은 지난 2015년 설립된 이래, 미래식량으로 주목받고 있는 식용곤충을 이용한 가공식품 개발에 총력을 기울여왔다. 특히, 지난해 9월 공식 런칭한 자체 브랜드 ‘인비고(Invigor)’는 우리에게 친숙한 음식인 초콜릿, 망고처트니, 블루베리잼 등의 다양한 식재료에 풍부한 영양성분을 함유한 벼메뚜기 분말을 배합, ‘맛’과 ‘영양’을 동시에 충족시켰다는 평가를 받은 바 있다. 임정혁 대표는 “식용곤충은 소고기에 비해 3배 이상의 단백질을 가지고 있을 뿐 아니라, 아미노산, 식이섬유 등 영양성분이 풍부하면서도 유전자변이 등의 위험 없이 친환경 사육이 가능해 인류의 미래 대체식량자원으로 각광받고 있습니다. 하지만 곤충을 먹는다는 것에 대한 소비자들의 거부감이 뿌리 깊은 탓에 아직까지 산업 활성화에 어려움을 겪고 있는 것 또한 사실입니다”라고 설명했다. 식용곤충의 대중화를 위해선 곤충에 대한 선입견을 해소하는 것과 함께 식용곤충이 가진 영양과 장점을 알리는 것이 선결과제라고 판단한 임 대표는 오는 2021년을 목표로 ‘단계별 성장 계획’을 수립했다. 그리고 그 첫 번째 단계가 바로 식용곤충 가공식품의 시장 출시와 국내·외 판로개척이다.

“인류의 건강과 환경 위한 선택, 미래 먹거리의 기준 세울 터”
‘인비고(Invigor)’는 “식용곤충(Insect)이 가진 에너지(Vigor)를 통해 새로운 활력을 불어넣는다(Invigorate)”는 의미를 가진 식용곤충 가공식품 브랜드다. 인비고가 주로 사용하는 곤충은 깨끗하고 오염되지 않은 환경에서만 생존할 수 있는 ‘벼메뚜기(Grasshopper)’다. 벼메뚜기는 예로부터 우리 선조들이 즐겨 먹던 별미 중 하나였으나, 최근에는 환경오염으로 인해 좀처럼 찾아보기 어렵게 된 곤충이기도 하다. 임정혁 대표는 “저희 인비고 제품은 친환경적이고 깨끗한 곤충인 벼메뚜기의 분말을 활용, 기존 식재료의 식감과 풍미는 살린 채 풍부한 영양을 더함으로써 누구나 거부감 없이 섭취할 수 있도록 제조했습니다”라고 답했다. 인비고는 지난 4월, 클라우드 펀딩을 통해 113%의 목표금액을 달성하는 등 소비자들로부터 높은 평가를 받았으며, ‘2017 서울국제식품전’ 참가, 베트남, 태국 등의 전시회 및 박람회 참가를 통해 식용곤충에 대한 거부감이 적은 동남아시아 지역을 타깃으로 해외 진출을 추진하고 있다. 현재 인비고 그래스호퍼 카카오, 망고처트니, 블루베리 잼 등의 제품은 온라인 판매가 시작됐으며, 오프라인 판로 또한 물색하고 있다. 
임 대표는 “식용곤충은 적은 양에도 단백질, 식이섬유, 아미노산, 불포화지방산 등의 영양성분을 풍부하게 함유하고 있어 고른 영양섭취가 부족한 현대인들과 고령층, 특히 환자들에게 더없이 훌륭한 ‘영양공급원’이 될 수 있습니다. 이에 저희는 ‘식용곤충을 활용한 고령식’ 개발에 힘써왔으며, 지난 2017 창업리그 지역별리그에서 우수상을 수상, 제품화를 준비 중에 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 이외에 성인 1일 권장 필수 영양소를 만족하는 레토르트 형태로의 개발도 진행하고 있으며, 조만간 연구를 통해 체내 흡수율 증가 및 소화기능 문제를 해결할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다고 전했다. 
㈜디앤이이노베이션은 오는 2018년, 현재 출시된 인비고 제품의 내수 확대에 주력하는 동시에, 식용곤충에 대한 인식 개선을 위한 마케팅 강화, R&BD 사업을 통한 고령식 개발에 더욱 매진할 계획이다. 특히 기존 식재료에 단순히 식용곤충을 덧붙이는 것이 아니라, 다양한 연구와 개발을 통해 맛과 영양의 균형을 갖춘 ‘미래 친환경 식품의 기준’을 세우는 것을 목표로 삼았다. 미래 먹거리의 새로운 가치를 창조하고 있는 ㈜디앤이이노베이션의 도전이 성공적인 결실을 맺을 수 있길 기대해 본다.

“Edible insects are promising future food”

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) predicted that about 20% of 9 billion people on earth will possibly suffer from poverty around 2050. In other words, the limited food would not be able to support the number of the population by that time. Seeing the need of alternative, many companies are jumping into new food resources and D&E Innovation is one of them. Established in 2015, this Korean company has poured its whole strength in development of processed food on edible insects. September last year, CEO Lim introduced the first product ‘Invigor’ made of oxya japonica (grasshopper) mixed with chocolate, mango chutney and blueberry jam; it is received positive feedback for satisfying both taste and nutritional value. “Edible insects contain 3 times more protein than beef and are rich in amino acid and dietary fiber. They are safe and eco-friendly and are received as promising future food. The only drawback is that the idea of eating the insects is still not familiar with people” says Lim. And the idea of Lim to improve their prejudice was to focus on promoting the nutritional value the edible insects have. For this, Lim has made the year 2021 to complete his ‘gradual growth plan’ while seeking the distribution channels both home and abroad. Lim named his first brand as ‘Invigor’ to mean the edible insects give vigor in a way to give marketable image to consumers. “We also made grasshopper into powder to make various forms of processed food for easy intake.” Invigor has drawn 113% targeted capital through crowd funding last April and Lim has already started the promotion by participating in ‘Seoul Food 2017’ as well as various fairs in Vietnam and Thailand where people are relatively familiar with eating insects. It is good to know that Invigor products also can be bought online. “Edible insects are rich in protein, dietary fiber, amino acid and unsaturated fat which are especially beneficial for elderly people.” However, Lim’s ambition to grow the business is bigger than what he’s doing now; to establish the ‘standard for eco-friendly alternative food for future’.
