Networking business incubation centers for better results
Won Gil Cho, Ph.D, Chairman of the Chungnam Business Incubator Association, (Department of International Trade, Namseoul University)

The Chungnam Business Incubator Association is consisted of business incubation centers, Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Chungcheongnam-do Office and Chungnam Techno Park alongside 17 university business incubation centers and 4 organizations. “Each university business incubation center embraces provisional startups or the startups being established less than 3 years. It is the role of the centers to provide support and grow them to be strong mid-sized businesses. The role of the association, on the other hand, is to connect each center and organization with the mutual goal of promoting regional economy” explains Chairman Won Gil-cho of the association. Won worked for the Korean Institute for Electronic Trade and Commerce Promotion and has served as a professor of international trade at Namseoul University. Since 2010, he also has served as the director of the Business Incubation Center and of the Global Trade Experts Incubation Group. “Securing the capital probably is the biggest difficulty for most startups. For this, the association focuses on marketing strategies by using on/off line media and publishes Performance Results Book on yearly basis.” At the CBIA Demo Day held on 28 last month, the association ran various programs such as investment invitation for in-house companies of the BI, investment training and consulting and actual IR. 20 companies including TSPG International participated in the event on the day and the association drew substantial results for investment roadmap, measures for advancement in business models and future strategy to invite investment. Generally, the Business Incubation Center is specialized in direct support from professors and researchers, joint technology development, technology transfer and cutting edge research facilities. The Chungnam Business Incubator Association, however, boasts much more than this. For example, the Namseoul University Industry-Academic Cooperation solely runs the Internet Data Center customized for VR, AR, Big Data, IoT and crowd-based startup. According to the Performance Results Book 2016, 422 in-house companies are operating in 18 Business Incubation Centers harvesting 105.2 billion won (USD$91M) sales with 12.3 billion won export, generating 1,075 employees, and applying for 201 intellectual property rights of which 140 being registered. Meanwhile, Won pointed out the need of government grants, improvement of the systems, expansion of the infrastructure and channels to the 4th industry. “Many startups experience the same difficulty although the areas of business differ greatly. For this, the association will keep doing its best to provide the best business foundation and support possible for our talented startups.”
