President Mirziyoyev emphasizes ‘substantial economic cooperation’ at Korea-Uzbekistan Business Forum

Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan, made a state visit to Korea on 22 last month. It was the second state visit after U.S. President Donald Trump since Moon Jae-in took the Blue House. As the first move of his four day schedule, President Mirziyoyev attended the Korea-Uzbekistan Business Forum held at the Shilla Seoul early in the morning the next day. The forum was organized by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the State Committee for Investments of the Republic of Uzbekistan under the title “Uzbekistan: Economic Liberalization, Society Democratization”. In his opening remark, Mr. Mirziyoyev emphasized with great passion on substantial cooperation and pointed out each business man with his partners in each field to stand up to give details on progress for cooperation. Korean Finance Minister Kim Dong-yeon in his congratulatory remark said that he visited Uzbekistan a number of times and met Shavkat Mirziyoyev who was then serving as Deputy Prime Minister. He highlighted that they shared a heart-to-heart talk and he could see the passion of the people of Uzbekistan in national development and also the intimacy with Korean people. He closed his speech by saying that the state visit would enhance cooperation between the two countries and he delivered the warmhearted welcome on behalf of President Moon and the people of Korea. After the forum, Mr. Mirziyoyev paid a respect at Seoul National Cemetery and held a summit talk with Moon at the Blue House. The two leaders agreed for substantial economic and political cooperation. Numerous public organizations and businesses including the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation, Hyundai Engineering & Construction and POSCO also signed MOU for substantial cooperation on the occasion of the forum and the summit. Korea is one of the top 5 trade partners of Uzbekistan and ranked as the third investor and more than 400 Korean companies are operating at the moment.

Latvian Embassy in Seoul celebrates the 99th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia

The Latvian Embassy in Seoul held a ceremony celebrating the 99th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia on 17 November at Regency Room, Grand Hyatt Seoul. Many diplomats, government officials, reporters and ordinary people attended the event on the day to celebrate together the anniversary. The Latvian Ambassador Mr. Peteris Vaivars opened his remark by showing his deepest respect and true friendship to the people of Korea on behalf of Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis. “I would like to underline good increase of Korean business presence in Latvia and growing number of Latvian exports to Korea which increased by 15% and reached 50 million EUR in 2016 and shows rapid growth this year as well. Latvia is happy to welcome more Korean tourists which number is growing by 10-15% annually” said Vaivars and continued with emphasis “In 2018, when Korea will be hosting Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, Latvia will celebrate its 100th Anniversary. We will kick-off the celebration by the first ever visit of the President of the Republic of Latvia to beautiful country Korea in February 2018. Kwon said “99 years ago, people of Latvia firmly stood together, overcoming all the foreign challenges, hand in hand, heart to heart, and started their own nation…having rebuilt the country, Latvia is now a member of NATO and EU, and joined the Eurozone and most recently OECD. Latvian economy has also shown one of the fastest growth rate(s) in Europe….I trust Korea and Latvia will remain the best friends.” A Latvian opera singer sang Latvian National Anthem and the Incheon Seo District Children’s Choir sang Korean National Anthem and Arirang later on as a congratulatory song which closed the event on the day.
