“Dance starts with manners”
Lee Ki-yeol, Chairman of Korea Life Social Dance Association

Coffee, chocolate and social dance first appeared in Korea in the late 19th century. Social dance especially spread and maintained its culture until the era of the military regimes during which the dance was forced to go underground. It was in the 90s that social dance started to reappear by private clubs and the media. Talking about social dance, we must not miss mentioning Lee Ki-yeol, Chairman of Korea Life Social Dance Association which boasts 9,000 members as of the year 2016. For the last 10 years, the association has spread the technique and its manners to many universities and organizations. Lee in particular paid a great effort for social dance to take part in Sport for All. The court dance in the 17th century Europe was fused with folk dance to become social dance according to Lee. Korea saw the first western dance hall in Mitsukoshi Department Store, Myeong-dong, Seoul and it played a part in making ‘Gyeongsung Culture’. However, the advent of the New Village Movement and the infidelity of the spouses of those who went to the Middle East to earn money had brought disgrace to dance halls until around 1992. Today, 5 kinds of standard dance and another 5 kinds of Latin American dance are accepted as sports dance and the social dances such as trot, blues and jitterbug also are categorized in Sport for All. Lee used to work in the audio equipment business and came to know about social dance. He studied about the dance both in theory and practice and started to form a club. The sextuple rhythm Korean jitterbug is unique in its kind for it combined jazz and swing according to Lee. Paso doble is a fast tempo double step dance of Spain and waltz started from Austrian royal families adopted by the UK and France to be waltz, Lee explains. For this reason, learning the decorum of the dance was very important and nobles started to learn manners and respect to others through the dance. Likewise, social dance today requires understanding of one’s body movement and more importantly the manners in order for the dance to be 100% truthful and to create synergy with the partner. Lee has produced more than 1,500 social dance instructors and been invited to many organizations to give a lesson. Among many types of dances he has mastered, Lee especially is focusing on jitterbug, blues, trot and tango nowadays. This is because these are the foundation for one to move onto jive, rumba, cha-cha-cha and salsa. However, if Latin dance and modern dance might suit for young people, social dance is ideal for people in their middle age, recommends Lee. If this article gives you a sense of motivation, you had better give yourself a go for social dance.
