Introducing eco-friendly farmed shrimps

Every success requires challenge. But the challenge often hides fear behind its determined face. Nevertheless, we give praise for the successes and even more of it when it comes to young ones. In his mid-20s, Cheon Jae-min challenged for shrimp farming and made a success. He grew his interest in shrimp farming since high school years and majored in Seafood and Aquaculture Science when moved onto Gyeongsang National University. Under the instruction of farming and marine science professor Gang Suk-joong, he studied hard to secure a certain level of knowledge and technology in the field. After graduation, he worked at a large seedling company for a year to experience the farming procedure from hatching to growing and selling which followed by further 2 years of experience in shrimp farming in Taean and Sinan, famous counties for shrimp farming, during which he acquired the eco-friendly farming technology called ‘Bio-Floc’. “Shrimps live together in groups. Naturally, the farming requires effective treatment to the waste as it can cause water pollution and diseases otherwise. And the use of the antibiotics and chemical substances were not received positively as it directly affects the quality of shrimps. ‘Bio-Floc’, on the other hand, uses microorganisms that live off the waste of shrimps. The technology is safe and effective, saves cost, and above all produces healthy shrimps” explains Cheon. With his knowledge, experience and entrepreneurial spirit, Cheon opened Shrimp Palace in Yeosu in 2015 and has made a success. Recognizing the contribution he made to the industry, the mayor of South Jeolla Province awarded a citation to Cheon in November last year. Quite recently, Shrimp Palace has become the first shrimp farm to have obtained the HACCP certificate and is working on the ASC certificate issued from the World Farming Association. Shrimp Palace also has been appeared on Channel A and received positive response. “Shrimps are rich in protein, vitamin and minerals and have sweet and clean taste. All staff of Shrimp Palace will keep doing our best to provide only the best eco-friendly farmed shrimps to Korean people.”
