Working together to promote local fishing industry
Jang Woong-sun, Chairman of Yeosu Fish Market

Yeosu is known for beautiful coastlines, islands and fresh seafood. However, there wasn’t a proper fish market in this seaside city up until late 80s but rather poor small markets scattered here and there when compared to the Jagalchi Market in Busan or the Noryangjin Fisheries Wholesale Market in Seoul. In this respect, opening of the Yeosu Fish Market in 2010 could only be welcoming and promising news for many citizens especially the people of the industry. The market was the result of the donations of 1.34 million USD from 205 fish merchants and the city’s promotion policy. The donations were used to secure a place that can accommodate around 200 fish stores and modern facilities including the Spanish water puller that pulls up the seas water from 300 meters from the land to the market; it can also sterilize the water with UV rays. “The conditions were appalling back in the day. Parking space was far from enough and incidents of food poisoning were reported every now and then. So people of the industry decided to do something and started collecting donations and finally opened the Yeosu Fish Market with the one goal to turn the market as popular as the Jagalchi in Busan and the Noryangjin in Souel” explained Jang Woong-sun, Chairman of the Yeosu Fish Market. As a result, the market has grown today as a total marine products outlet and 60 regional fish markets are benchmarking the Yeosu Fish Market at the moment, according to a data. The market won a runner-up prize in the marketing category at the 2012 Korea Leading Market Expo and was chosen as ‘Cultural Tourism Market’ by the Gwangju Jeonnam Regional Small and Medium Business Administration in 2014. The market currently is attracting 2 million visitors a year and orders can be delivered to the desired areas nationwide alongside onsite purchase. “We are also encouraging the store owners of the market to clearly mark ‘place of origin’ on each product and to keep the right proportion as stated on the product to secure customer trust.” However, there is discordance between the market merchants over management and profit shares but Jang and the members of the market are determined to work together to settle down the issues within the early next year. Instead, the market will give more efforts in improving service quality and growing the market as one of the top fish markets in Korea.
