Suggesting a new paradigm for English education in Korea
Jo Sung-young, Director of EZ Academy & EZ Study

Ever advancing globalization is requiring English language competency more than ever. To do a business today for many companies means to do it overseas also and English is an indispensible tool to make it possible. It is regretful, however, to point out the ever stagnated English education in Korea that has turned many learners to failure in real conversations. “I personally ascribe it to the attitudes of both the educators and the learners. What is odd is once it becomes a subject of the curriculum, the learners started to get stressed and pressured on gaining the scores despite they actually enjoyed learning English since very young” said Jo Sung-young, Director of EZ Academy & EZ Study. “The first step to take I think is to throw a question ‘Why you should learn English?’ to the learners. And the question must be approached not as a subject of the curriculum but what benefit it can actually bring to them. In other words, the leaners had better take the ‘school records’ as a tool to motivate their learning in a way to fulfill their need or dream in a broad term rather than just make the scores required to entering top universities. And this is the reason that a new paradigm for English education must be suggested and practiced.” There is a considerable disparity between the curriculums of elementary, middle and high schools in Korea, according to Jo. So she borrowed ideas of the U.S. systems that have well connected level by level curriculums and applied them to the Korean educational environment. “Understanding the language system must come first before moving onto grammar but Koreans are more familiar with rote learning and that’s why many of them give up as time goes by. So it was natural for me to introduce the advanced U.S. curriculum and teaching materials to all students at EZ Academy and & EZ Study alongside our own continuous research and development on the effective materials.” Jo also pointed out the importance of self-directed learning and the teacher’s role to help them achieve the best result possible. As part of this effort, EZ Academy is running a number of customized programs according to each purpose such as SAT, discussions, competitions and school records and all courses are backed up by the EZ Academy’s own roadmap built on each different level of abilities and goals. It is noteworthy that Jo herself carries out all grammar classes and the lessons are uploaded online for students to review anywhere anytime. When asked about the greatest asset of EZ Academy, director Jo answered “It’s undoubtedly the passion and engagement of the teachers.”
