Customized curriculum designed for each child
Na Yoon-young, Executive Director of Ihwajeongwon Kindergarten

Polish educator Janusz Korczak said “Children must be among children but not at their home. There are no children but only people.” This famous saying emphasizes the fact that children are not the subject to being taught but complete human being to be respected. Established in 1997 in Ilgok-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, Ihwanjeongwon Kindergarten has put into practice the spirit of Janusz Korczak for the last 20 years and has grown a famous kindergarten in the region. Alongside its customized curriculum designed for each child, excellent facilities from playground and classroom to library and cafeteria have contributed to producing 60 graduates ever year, totaling 1,500 for the last 20 years. “Children learn and grow themselves by compromising with the surroundings. It is very important to see children as complete human being to be respected not the subject to being taught. This is the reason why we need to apply customized curriculum” explains Na Yoon-young, Executive Director of Ihwajeongwon Kindergarten. The programs of Ihwajeongwon Kindergarten are made with consideration on each age group and characteristics. 5 to 6 years old, for example, are focused on building right personality while 7 years old on preparatory learning for elementary school including Korean, math and field trip. However, what sets Ihwajeongwon Kindergarten apart from the counterparts is at the ‘project programs’ which change every year. If <Land of Wesley – Garden> in the year 2015 focused on green fingers, <Universe – Moon People> in 2016 on science while <Book - Anthony Browne> in 2017 on reading which left a special memory for both children and teachers. These project programs are very creative and effective to stimulate children’s interest and motivation. Meanwhile, Na is preparing to introduce ‘coding program’ for the year 2018 and she already has secured a special coding classroom facilitated with smart toys and Samsung Smart Note for children. “There’s a term to call children today: ‘digital natives’. The term indicates the fact that children have high understandability on smart devices. I think using them can be a good future-oriented education. In the same respect, the purpose of coding education can raise children’s computational thinking and smart toys and tablets can function as good tools.” It is also notable that Na is running <Case-based Knowledge Study> with teachers on a regular basis. It is designed to turn both good and bad behaviors of children to an asset of knowledge and experience for future reference. “It is our goal to create a better and effective educational environment that is open, creative and respective for children, teachers and school parents alike.”

Note: <Power Korea> “rewrites” the Korean article in English “concisely” for native English speakers and staff of foreign missions in Korea.
