Generating a clean and safe solar energy in Korea

According to the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), South Korea has 6 nuclear power plants that run 24 reactors. It is 6th in the world in terms of the number of reactors and the generation power but No.1 in the density of the plants; nuclear energy takes up 30% of the total amount of power generated in Korea. 

The Moon Administration’s eco-friendly energy policy, however, has aroused argument between dissenters and supporters over pros and cons of nuclear powers plants. The former argues that it is economic, safe and eco-friendly while the latter particularly pointed out the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011 that took 1,368 lives as of March 2016 and left the area devastated. An argument also arose over generating cost; the former points out the cheap generating cost of 55 KRW per kWh while the latter the fact that it is more costly when added investment, management, fuels and after treatment. The argument, however, seems to be settled by the breakdown of the U.S. EIA (Energy Information Administration): 99.1 USD per mWh for nuclear power, 66.8 USD for solar energy and 52 USD for wind power on land, based on the year 2020. 

“The global energy trend is about ‘eco-friendly’. The renewable energy rate of Germany, for example, has increased to 28% last year from 15% in 2010 while the U.S. already has surpassed the total amount of the nuclear power generations. Also, the UK’s wind power on sea starting from 2022/2023 has been decided to be provided at 58 GBP per mWh, a 60% cheaper than the nuclear power newly being built at the moment which is 92.50” emphasizes Kyungwon Power CEO Jo Young-ho who is received as one of the top solar energy specialists in Korea.

Many people see solar energy as a promising and eco-friendly next generation power that can catch two birds at one stone: environment and growth. Back then, generating solar energy was an expensive technology. The technological advancement in recent years, however, has increased the generating efficiency over 20% and the KIET (Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade) predicts that the cost will decrease to 50~60 KWR per kWh by 2023. Solar energy is also received positive as it does not create any fuel cost, air pollution, waste and noise but lasts at least 30 years with simple maintenance work. 

Kyungwon Power was established in 2006 and has grown to lead the solar energy industry in Korea today. It took the initiative in introducing eco-friendly energy solutions and aroused public awareness during the years when the term ‘solar energy’ was still unfamiliar. 

“To put it simple, we expanded the scope of solar energy to industrial use from home use through years. We built effective systems that can deal with all aspects from design and installation to selling and maintenance and has carried out a number of big projects successfully. As a result, we now have secured a yearly 30 billion KRW sales and it proved that Kyungwon Power is No.1 in the field in Korea.”

Kyungwon Power offers one-stop service from signing a PPA (Power Purchasing Agreement) to electricity trade including the parceling out of the development patches. It can generate a steady profit in a long term perspective and the government’s eco-friendly energy policy also plays advantageous according to CEO Jo. A 250 million KRW investment can generate more than 10% profits based on a 99kW patch, an official of Kyungwon Power tipped. 

It seems that the Moon Administration’s plan to have increased the renewable energy ratio to 20% by 2030 can only play promising to Korea’s solar power industry.
