MOON CONTINUES ENGAGING WITH GLOBAL LEADERS
Moon receives U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis
Moon received U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis who visited Korea to attend the 49th ROK-U.S. Security Consultation Meeting. Moon showed his gratitude to a continuous effort of Mattis in maintaining security of the Korean Peninsula and asked him to play an important role in settling down the North nuclear issues and missile launchings based on the firm Korea-U.S. Alliance. Moon emphasized on the mutual goal of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and on strong security and combined defense readiness. Moon also asked Mattis an active support for the implementation of deploying, procurement and development of the U.S. Strategic Assets agreed last time at the summit with Trump. Mattis in response said “Despite the North’s 6th nuclear test and a series of missile launchings, our promise on security of South Korea remained unchanging. We value highly of peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula and will closely work together with Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo based on the firm ROK-U.S. Combined Defense to strengthen the nuclear deterrent force against the North.”
Moon meets Angel Gurria
President Moon had a talk with OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria who visited the Blue House on 19 last month. It was the third time they met each other after the G20 and the UN General Assembly. Gurria pointed out the similarity in priority of the policy between the Moon Administration and the OECD on productivity, growth, jobs, social justice and tolerance. Gurria then handed over Digitalization: An Enabling Force for the Next Production Revolution in Korea created by the OECD and Moon received it as a positive barometer to grow Korea as a digital powerhouse. Gurria praised Korea to have grown as a trustworthy partner of the OECD and Moon praised Gurria for the contribution to building global policy networks during his 3 consecutive terms as the Secretary General of the OECD. Gurria pointed out the fact that Mexico (his nationality) and Korea shared the longest working hours among OECD members while the productivity stayed half the standard and emphasized on the mutual effort to improve the conditions.
Moon receives Andrew Parsons
President Moon received Andrew Parsons, the new President of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) who visited Korea to attend the 9th IPC Project Review. Moon congratulated Andrew and they both agreed to work together to bring a successful PyeongChang Paralympic 2018 which will be held in 5 months. The two leaders exchanged opinions on participation of the North and Moon asked Parsons for a special interest and cooperation as the participation can gather momentum for peace in the Korean Peninsula. Moon then asked opinions on the preparation of the PyeongChang 2018 and Parsons said he was satisfied and impressed in all most all areas but pointed out the need of strategies for selling tickets. Moon agreed on the lack of public interest so far yet and suggested active cooperation in that part.
