윤석희 작가의 작품에는 한국의 미가 고스란히 녹아들어 있다. 불화에서 많은 감동을 받아 수월관음도를 동판작품으로 만들어보고, 불화의 매력에 푹 빠져 여러 가지 불화 모사 위주의 작품을 만들어내면서 불화를 배워가며 익히고 있다는 윤 작가는 자신이 만들어낸 동판에 전통문화의 고유한 멋이 고이 새겨지길 바란다. 20여 년 동안 쌓아올린 독창적인 솜씨로 이루어진 그녀의 작품은 한국의 미가 어우러진 독특한 작품으로서 한층 깊이를 더하고 있다. 

절망의 끝자락에 삶의 빛이 되어준 동판공예.
윤석희 작가는 어둡고 힘들었던, 절망의 순간에 동판 공예와 인연을 맺게 됐다. 누구나 살면서 심적으로, 육체적으로 너무 힘들어 모든 것을 놓고 싶을 때가 있다. 윤석희 작가 또한 암흑 같던 좌절의 순간 속에서 많은 방황을 겪고 있었다. 길고 길 것만 같던 어두운 터널을 헤매던 때, 이 세상 무엇과도 바꿀 수 없는 두 아이들 때문에라도 '반드시 살아내야만 한다'고 다짐에 다짐을 더하던 그 때 어떻게 동판공예와 연이 닿았던 것 같다고 한다.
윤 작가가 처음 작품 활동을 시작하면서 지금까지 그 명맥을 이어오고 있는 동판공예는 흔히 알려져 있는 동판화와 같은 소재를 사용하기는 하지만 명백히 다른 장르라고 한다. 동판공예와 동판화는 구리 금속이 주성분인 판재를 이용하는 것은 같지만, 동판화는 두꺼운 동판이나 아연판에 조각칼(Burin)이나 동판 조각 바늘(Dry Point) 등의 도구를 사용해 그림을 새기고 요판을 만들어 인쇄를 목적으로 하는 예술이다. 그렇기 때문에 잉크를 발라 종이를 얹고 여러 번 찍어낼 수 있는 복수성 예술이나, 동판공예는 그렇지 않다.
동판공예는 금속에 속하는 신주봉(황동봉)을 깎아서 만든 여러 가지 형태의 도구를 사용하는 점이 다르고, 동판 위에 그림을 그리고 입체적으로 부조를 내며 약품 부식과 토치를 이용한 화(火)부식 등이 필요하고, 이러한 과정을 통해 부분적으로 광택도 내어서 만들어내는 작품이다. 동판공예는 인쇄를 목적으로 하고 있지 않기 때문에 말 그대로 일품일작(一品一作)인 순수 수공예품이라고 할 수 있다.
윤 작가 역시 처음 동판공예를 만났을 때에는 모든 것이 생소했기에 스승님에게 가르침을 받았다고 한다. 작품의 기초를 가르쳐주신 만큼 감사를 표해야 하는 것이 사실이나, 서로가 생각하는 작품의 방향이 달랐고 생각하는 바가 많이 달랐던 탓에 자주 만나 뵙지는 못했다. 게다가 스승님께서 사고로 일찍 돌아가셨던 탓에 많은 안타까움이 남아있다고 한다. 그녀는 스승님께서 좀 더 오래 사셨더라면 작품 성향은 달랐어도 같이 할 수 있는 부분도 많았을 텐데 그러하지 못한 아쉬움이 있다면서 “많은 것을 배우고 느낄 수 있는 스승님을 모시고 있는 분들은 정말 복 받으신 분들이라고 생각합니다"라고 언급했다.

세월이 흐를수록 깊어지는 멋
전통문화유산으로 보존할 수 있는 작품 만들고 싶어
윤 작가는 힘들 때 든든한 벗이 되어준 동판공예의 가장 큰 매력으로 세월이 흐를수록 깊어지는 멋을 꼽는다. “동판공예는 묵직한 멋도 있지만, 세월이 흐를수록 신비한 색채감과 깊은 멋이 더해지는 것이 매력입니다. 또 영구적으로 보존할 수 있는 예술품이라는 것도 큰 메리트입니다.”
윤 작가는 특히 불교문화에 애정을 가지고 있어 작품들의 대부분이 불화를 모사하거나 역사적인 배경을 가진 문화유산을 동판으로 재현한 것들이다. 윤 작가의 작품 안에서 구릿빛으로 빛나는 부처님의 모습은 혼란한 시대를 위로하기 위해 지상에 내려온 부처의 정신을 구현한 것과 같다. 그렇기 때문에 윤 작가는 자신의 작품을 만드는 데 있어 섬세한 필치를 가장 중요하게 여긴다.
자신만의 섬세한 미학을 완성하고 세상과 소통하기 시작한 윤 작가는 유적지나 박물관 등을 돌아볼 때마다 역사적으로 가치 있는 우리의 문화유산들이 많이 훼손되어 있거나 사라져가고 있는 것을 보면 아쉬움이 크다고 한다. 그래서 한편으로는 이 귀중한 자료들을 동판으로 새겨두면 좋지 않을까 생각한다고 전했다.
현재 그녀의 꿈은 전통 문화유산의 일부를 동판공예로 재현해 내는 것과, 동판공예와 접목시켜서 조그마한 전시관이나 박물관을 만들어놓고 싶은 것이라고 한다. 그녀는 동판공예와 접목시켜서 만들고 싶은 것들이 있기에 이미 오래 전에 한지공예와 DIY가구도 배웠다고 한다. 그리고 시간이 될 때마다 딸의 모습을 동판에 담아놓고 언제 한 번 전시회를 갖고 싶지만, 현실적인 문제들에 부딪혀 그리고 싶은 것들을 마음껏 그려내지 못해 아쉬운 마음이 크다고 전했다.

예술가들 지원할 수 있는 환경 필요해
오로지 작품 활동을 위해 지내온 지난 20여 년 동안 윤 작가의 일상을 지탱해 준 것은 바로 딸과 아들이었다. 몇 번이고 죽을 뻔하고 힘들어 모든 것을 놓고 싶었던 때, 어린 나이에 가족들과 떨어져 운동을 하느라고 힘든 아들과, 항상 자기 일에 최선을 다하고 마인드컨트롤로 스스로를 다스려가면서 항상 밝은 모습을 유지하려는 딸아이의 모습을 보면, 너무나 가슴이 아파 부끄럽지 않은 엄마가 되자고 굳건히 자존심 하나로 버텨온 것 같다고 한다.
윤 작가의 아버지께서는 윤 작가가 어릴 때부터 서예와 민화를 즐겨 그리셨는데, 언젠가부터는 행초서를 즐겨 쓰시며, 한국 서예 비림 박물관에 다섯 점의 석비가 들어가 있기는 하지만 요즘 세상과는 어울리지 않는 선비님 같은 스타일이다. 또 그녀의 딸은 홍대 미대를 졸업하고 현재 브랜드 디자이너로 활동하고 있는데 서로 바쁘고 멀리 떨어져 있는 환경 때문에 자주 만나지는 못하지만 전시회를 할 때마다 귀중한 조언에 마음을 다독인다고 한다.
한편 윤 작가는 “공예뿐만 아니라 모든 예술 및 문화 분야는 현대인의 각박하고 개인주의적인 삶에서 벗어나 정신의 윤활 작용을 해 주는 공간으로 변화하고 있습니다. 저 역시 공예를 하는 한 사람으로서 한국의 고유한 미를 담아 외국인들을 위한 관광 산업의 일환으로 발전시킬 수 있었으면 좋겠고, 그래서 더욱 예술가들을 지원하며 예술가들이 한 길을 걸어갈 수 있도록 뒷받침해주는 환경이 필요한 것 같습니다”라고 강조했다.
윤 작가의 좌우명은 조선 중기 문신인 상촌 신흠의 시조 중 한 가락인 ‘梧千年老恒藏曲/梅一生寒不賣香(오천년노항장곡/매일생한불매향, 오동나무는 천년을 늙어도 항상 가락을 지니고 있고/매화는 평생 추워도 향기를 팔지 않는다)’라고 한다. 이처럼 예술을 위해 자신의 가락을 지켜오는 윤 작가의 행보가 있었기에 우리나라 동판공예의 미래는 더욱 밝아지고 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.

“Copperplate art came to me as the light when I was in despair”
It was harsh time of her life when Yoon Suk-hee came to know about copperplate art. We all sometimes wish to put everything behind in life due to mental and physical fatigue. Yoon also was wandering around in despair that led her only into a dark tunnel. But she braced herself for her children, the jewels of her life, and determined to boldly face the harsh reality. Then copperplate art came to her. 

Having devoted her life in the art for many years, Yoon says that some people tend to confuse copperplate art with copperplate print but there is difference: the latter uses burin or dry point on copperplate or zinc sheet to carve figures to be printed for several times while the former uses various tools made of brass bar to create three dimensional effects; it requires chemical or fire corrosion through which comes the polish; it does not intend to print but each work itself becomes a complete work. 

Yoon started to learn the basic skills under the instruction of her teacher but she soon found differences in styles and ideas. Naturally, she could not make as much time as before to meet her teacher but sadly the teacher passed away due to an accident. Yoon was regretful that she could not spend more time with her teacher. Yoon says “Blessed are those who have a teacher whom she/he can learn many things.”

“I wish to make something that can pass down our tradition”
Yoon points out the time-woven charm of copperplate art as one of her most trustworthy companions. “The art gives me the charm of heaviness but what is more charming is the fact that the more the time elapses the deeper the beauty of the art. It is also a great merit that you can keep a work or more as an art work for as long as you can.” 

Most of Yoon’s works are related to Buddhism as she is fond of Buddhist culture. Yoon, for example, intended the copperplate Buddha to express the benevolent spirit of Buddha who came down onto the world of chaos to comfort the people. For this reason, Yoon takes each detail with utmost care and effort.  

Yoon traveled around the nation in an effort to find esthetic values and to communicate with the world and she was regretful that many of our valuable assets were damaged or disappearing. So it has become her dream to make these assets in copperplates for future reference and if possible to open an exhibition hall or museum where she can exhibit these works. She has an idea to combine her work with copperplate craft and for this she actually learned Korean paper craft and DIY furniture long time ago. She also wishes to put her daughter into a copperplate work and have an exhibition but it is regretful that the reality makes it difficult yet.

Support for artists is needed
Yoon said that she could be able to carry on her work for the last 20 years thanks to her daughter and son. She suffered from near death experience for several times and wished to put everything behind but her beloved daughter and son made her encouraged whenever in hard times. Yoon’s father loved calligraphy and folk painting since he was a child. He enjoys ‘haengchoseo’ and five of his haengchoseo stone works are in the Korea Calligraphy Bilim Museum but they are rather like scholar style somewhat different from the world we live in today.

Yoon also said that her brand designer daughter, who graduated from Hongik University, is working somewhere far from her but gives valuable advice whenever Yoon was holding an exhibition. 

“Art and culture, including any forms of crafts, play lubricating oils for busy and individualistic modern people today. In the same respect, I hope to promote my copperplate works in line with the development of Korean tourism industry. For this, I think that creating a good foundation to support artists is needed.” 

‘A paulownia tree keeps melody for a thousand years and an apricot flower does not sell its fragrance no matter how long she has to endure the harsh cold weather’ is her motto. Like the paulownia keeps its melody for a thousand years, Yoon has kept her melody for the last 20 years and the future of Korean copperplate craft, for this reason, seems brighter.
