The charm of copperplate art deepens as time goes by

“Copperplate art came to me as the light when I was in despair”
It was harsh time of her life when Yoon Suk-hee came to know about copperplate art. We all sometimes wish to put everything behind in life due to mental and physical fatigue. Yoon also was wandering around in despair that led her only into a dark tunnel. But she braced herself for her children, the jewels of her life, and determined to boldly face the harsh reality. Then copperplate art came to her. 

Having devoted her life in the art for many years, Yoon says that some people tend to confuse copperplate art with copperplate print but there is difference: the latter uses burin or dry point on copperplate or zinc sheet to carve figures to be printed for several times while the former uses various tools made of brass bar to create three dimensional effects; it requires chemical or fire corrosion through which comes the polish; it does not intend to print but each work itself becomes a complete work. 

Yoon started to learn the basic skills under the instruction of her teacher but she soon found differences in styles and ideas. Naturally, she could not make as much time as before to meet her teacher but sadly the teacher passed away due to an accident. Yoon was regretful that she could not spend more time with her teacher. Yoon says “Blessed are those who have a teacher whom she/he can learn many things.”

“I wish to make something that can pass down our tradition”

Yoon points out the time-woven charm of copperplate art as one of her most trustworthy companions. “The art gives me the charm of heaviness but what is more charming is the fact that the more the time elapses the deeper the beauty of the art. It is also a great merit that you can keep a work or more as an art work for as long as you can.” 

Most of Yoon’s works are related to Buddhism as she is fond of Buddhist culture. Yoon, for example, intended the copperplate Buddha to express the benevolent spirit of Buddha who came down onto the world of chaos to comfort the people. For this reason, Yoon takes each detail with utmost care and effort.  

Yoon traveled around the nation in an effort to find esthetic values and to communicate with the world and she was regretful that many of our valuable assets were damaged or disappearing. So it has become her dream to make these assets in copperplates for future reference and if possible to open an exhibition hall or museum where she can exhibit these works. She has an idea to combine her work with copperplate craft and for this she actually learned Korean paper craft and DIY furniture long time ago. She also wishes to put her daughter into a copperplate work and have an exhibition but it is regretful that the reality makes it difficult yet.

Support for artists is needed

Yoon said that she could be able to carry on her work for the last 20 years thanks to her daughter and son. She suffered from near death experience for several times and wished to put everything behind but her beloved daughter and son made her encouraged whenever in hard times. Yoon’s father loved calligraphy and folk painting since he was a child. He enjoys ‘haengchoseo’ and five of his haengchoseo stone works are in the Korea Calligraphy Bilim Museum but they are rather like scholar style somewhat different from the world we live in today.

Yoon also said that her brand designer daughter, who graduated from Hongik University, is working somewhere far from her but gives valuable advice whenever Yoon was holding an exhibition. 

“Art and culture, including any forms of crafts, play lubricating oils for busy and individualistic modern people today. In the same respect, I hope to promote my copperplate works in line with the development of Korean tourism industry. For this, I think that creating a good foundation to support artists is needed.” 

‘A paulownia tree keeps melody for a thousand years and an apricot flower does not sell its fragrance no matter how long she has to endure the harsh cold weather’ is her motto. Like the paulownia keeps its melody for a thousand years, Yoon has kept her melody for the last 20 years and the future of Korean copperplate craft, for this reason, seems brighter.
