God-given nice place, a secret of the time-honored temple ‘Wangdaesa’
Chief monk Doseon of Wangdaesa, the Korean Buddhist Wonhyo Order

Going up the stone steps laid neatly in the nice and salty wind from the West Sea leads to a snug little Buddhist temple surrounded by a wall of rock. This is a time-honored temple Wangdaesa located at Naehang-dong, Boryeong city, Chungnam. On the gigantic rock faces spread like a folding screen, stands a Buddha image on a cliff keeping its natural mystery for the time of a thousand years and looking down into the precincts, while stone towers laid everywhere and the sound of wind-bell that tinkles in the wind seem to embrace our hearts wearied from busy everyday life.

A place with a thousand years of Silla history, filled with warm air even in midwinter

Among many noted mountains and temples in our country. ‘Wangdaesa’ belonging to the Korean Buddhist Wonhyo Order is distinguished for a beautiful temple of great virtue holding the mystery of a thousand years’ Silla history as it was. According to hearsay, the last Silla King Gyeongsoon, foreboding the end of the dynasty’s life, stayed at this temple in Mt. Wangdae right before offering his country to Wang Geon, founder of Goryo, after which Wangdaesa was named when it was renovated in 2002 for the present appearance.
The rock protruding in the shape of the Royal seat in the center of southeast rock faces is ‘Wangdae’ allegedly seated by King Gyeongsoon Himself, and next to it stands the Buddha image engraved on a cliff built by King Gyeongsoon in his dreaming of Maitreya Bodhisattva’s Pure land. The rock cliff Buddha designated as Chungnam cultural asset material No. 317 is a cultural relic esteemed for high artistic value because of its good expression of holy rays emanating from the canonicals on the shoulder of the Maitreya and the back of the left body. Even though its eyes, nose and mouth are not clearly seen due to the weathering of a long time, it is still possible to verify its benevolent figure looking at the West Sea, which has been now drained off into a land, in the early morning when the sun is shining obliquely.
Passing through the small and large pagodas in orderly piles and neat stonewall routes, you see the Wangdaesa Buddha image on a cliff, and then turning your head to see the scenery open forward and the distant sea, you feel like you are in the snug and warm bosom of your mother anyway. The key is the holy energy filled in the precincts of Wangdaesa. In November 2013, Wangdaesa became the talk of the whole country when SBS TV program <A moment’s capture> reported an unusual sight in which frog eggs are hatched into tadpoles frolicking around in November, an early winter. At that time, bioengineer and biologist visited the place to find the reason but failed in discovering the exact principle. However, a Deng Shui master said that a good air is strongly spurting out because there is a big propitious spot on the site of the temple. Actually, after the broadcasting, a number of Feng Shui specialists paid a visit and proved that Wangdaesa is an exceptionally good place in the country and especially indicated that a strong Ki (energy) comes out from the neighborhood of the rock-cliff Buddha, dragon rock on the hill, front yard of the temple in tadpoles growing, place next to the pond and Sanshingak. When four years ago, a research team of Prof. Kim Hyung-dong, a well-known Ki researcher, visited Wangdaesa to measure the amount of Ki, he announced that it is the place of the most intensive vitality in the world with 144 times of dowsing response measured, much higher than 44 times at Sedona, US or Mt. Mani, Ganghwa Island.
Surprisingly, such a phenomenon has been going on until now, several years after the broadcasting. Even last winter, a number of people visited the place and witnessed the picture of tadpoles hatched from the eggs laid by a tree frog in a plant pot on the front yard. Mysterious things are following, like a bine of rose flowers in full bloom filling the fence in November, Crypsinus hastatus, an out-of-the way plant, growing in a rock crevice, out-of-season lime fruit borne until the first of December, etc.

Efficacious place of prayer for wishes

About Wangdaesa, there is ‘a legend of faithful son from Mr. Go’, who allegedly cured his mother’s disease by picking the fruit of mountain berries from its dragon rock in midwinter. With its mystery and medicinal efficacy, Wangdaesa is famous as a praying place visited by numerous Buddhists and tourists who want to achieve their wishes or cure their disease or pain, and take good energy from it. The statue of Maitreya Buddha at Wangdaesa is known to achieve one wish while aforementioned dragon rock, a place with the strongest Ki in Mt. Wangdae, has a legend of curing people of disease only if joining one’s hands for five minutes in front of the rock. It is said that one who had returned after making a polite bow here had his firm recover miraculously and that another revisited Wangdaesa to express thanks because he had been safe and sound even in a big traffic accident.
Besides, visitors here don’t hesitate to count Wangdaesa as Boryeog’s No. 1 hidden sight spot because of Mt. Wangdae’s beautiful scenery by the change of season, a hundred-year-old cherry trees in full bloom every spring, Seohae Big Bridge and downtown Boryeong seen in the distance, and an open sight embracing the West Sea. Especially, in 2015, installing safety facility was finished on the passage underdrain made up inevitably when the West Coast Highway had been constructed, guaranteeing people a more convenient and safer visit to Wangdaesa.
Doseon chief monk of Wangdaesa said, “From ancient times, Wangdaesa has been known as a miracle place and that praying for your wish here will be answered without fail. Especially, while joining one’s hands toward the dragon rock from the sermon hall, you can experience the Ki of the mountain and earth pouring down into the whole body. Each year, numerous people are visiting Wangdaesa to take such energy.” Monk Doseon added, “For the rest of the year, we hope that more people receive the energy gushing out from the dragon rock to make it a love and blessing for their life. We will also pray for all the people’s wellbeing and the country’s unity and prosperity with the mercy of Buddha.” With this frame of mind, monk Doseon is taking the lead in salvation for all the people, drawing a dragon dharma by ingesting the strong Ki of dragon rock. Monk Doseon is also known as a naming expert who helps many people work out their own destiny. It is hoped that all those who visit the time-honored temple Wangdaesa hugging and making their wearied mind peaceful will make their dearest wish come true.
