Standing back a bit and enjoying the slow landscape of the country on the western coast
Lee Hyeong-ja, Chairwoman of Hongseong Neurisil Village Promotion Committee

A theme village designed for agritourism
Living in nature always provides us vitality. We can enjoy a moment of green mountains, blue sea, clean air and fresh food by escaping the stuffy city life. Children can learn communication with nature and cherish the valuable time and remember back the good times every now and then. Located in Seobu-myeon, Hongseong County, Hongseong Neurisil Village is embraced by
Unbong Mountain behind and rice paddies spreading in front. The name ‘Neurisil’ came from the beautiful golden wave of the fields. Just 2 to 3 minute distance by car is the widely spread mud flat and the Yellow Sea. So visiting the village gives you both how rural farm and fishing villages look like at one go. It was 2008 that a wind of change started to blow to the village: turning its shape to a themed rural village. Lee Hyeong-ja, the chairwoman of the Hongseong Neurisil Village Promotion Committee said “The village started to draw attention thanks to its clean environment and of course the generous heart of the villagers. Some of the visitors were charmed by the beautiful landscape and moved their base here. As a result, the village now has grown to be a representative aritourism village of Hongseong County designated by the Rural Development Administration.” You can enjoy various experience programs at Hongseong Neurisil Village: making Korean sauces, clam chopped noodle soup, fruit harvesting and tasting local cuisine. The village also runs connected experience programs in cooperation with nearby facilities: hose riding, Gungri Dock – one of the Eight Scenic Views of Hongseong – and Gwangchun Traditional Market.

“Villagers will work together in creating a livable village”
The committee successfully held a back-to-the-farm event on August 17 in cooperation with the country’s Agricultural Technology Center, Back-To-The-Farm Support Center and Back-To-The Farm Support Study Group. The event was praised for suggesting a model case of harmony between the natives and the newly settled villagers. Lee said “Most natives are old people so the newly settled young villagers proactively participated in the committee and are making great contribution to creating a livable village.” As a result, the people who visited the village praised the ‘slowness’ and ‘comfort’ of the village unlike other weekend experience villages that have become too commercial or raised their guard against outsiders. However, Lee pointed out the inconveniences and difficulties the residents still have to endure. “Despite the active support for experience programs, it is still hard for many villagers to find a job to keep their ends meet. I think it might be helpful if the government can bring up a plan such as a western coast development project, for example.” Lee, who also runs her own business ‘Sanghwang Janchibang’, an event and feast agent, said that she was determined to give utmost effort in creating a livable Hongseong Neurisil Village.
