“언제나 환자의 입장에서 최고의 진료를 펼치겠습니다”
이준식 원장의 전문 분야는 망막(황반변성)과 녹내장이다. ‘황반변성’이란 시력을 담당하는 망막 중심의 황반에 변성이 일어나 시력장애를 일으키는 것을 말하며, ‘녹내장’이란 안압의 상승으로 인해 시신경이 눌리거나 혈액 공급에 장애가 생겨 시신경 기능에 이상을 초래하는 질환을 말한다. 대부분 안과질환하면 ‘백내장’을 떠올리지만, 황반변성과 녹내장 또한 실명을 초래하는 주요 질환 중 하나로 꼽히고 있으며, 최근에는 노년층 뿐 아니라 40~50대 장년층이나 20~30대 청년층에서도 발병 사례가 보고되고 있다고 한다. 이준식 원장은 “백내장의 경우 증상이 바로 나타나 발견이 쉽고, 특별한 문제가 없을 시 수술을 통해 시력을 회복할 수 있습니다. 하지만 황반변성과 녹내장의 경우 초기 증상이 없어 치료시기를 놓치는 경우가 많고, 특별한 수술방법도 알려져 있지 않습니다”라고 설명했다. 즉, 조기 발견과 적절한 약물치료만이 실명을 예방하는 가장 좋은 방법이라는 것이 이 원장의 조언이다. 
구로병원 임상교수로 재직하며 수만 명의 외래 진료와 10,000례 이상의 수술을 집도하고, 23편 이상의 논문을 발표하면서 세계 3대 안과학술지에 논문이 등재된 바 있으며, 강남에서 유명 안과전문의로 활약해 온 그가 예산에 내려오게 된 까닭은 바로 여기에 있다. 충남 전의면에서 군의관으로 근무하던 시절, 조기 진단과 빠른 치료가 핵심인 안과 질환에서 많은 수의 지역 주민들이 소외되어 고통 받고 있다는 것에 깊은 안타까움을 느꼈기 때문이다. 이 원장은 “당시 열악한 환경과 낡은 장비 탓에 더 많은 도움을 드리지 못한 것에 좌절하기도 했지만, 지역 주민들과 유대를 쌓으며 안과 전문의로서의 진정한 보람을 느꼈습니다. 대학교수도 좋고, 강남의 대형안과에서 근무하는 것도 좋았지만, 마음 속 깊은 곳엔 나를 좀 더 필요로 하는 곳에서 일하고 싶다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 결국 보다 좋은 환경에서 최신·최고의 장비를 갖추고 진료를 시행해보고자 오재룡 원장님과 뜻을 함께하게 되었습니다”라고 밝혔다. 
언제나 환자의 입장에서, 환자의 고통을 공감하고, 어떻게 하면 환자의 고통을 줄여줄 수 있을까를 고민한다는 이준식 원장. 그는 최신 의료지식과 정보에 대한 끊임없는 공부와 확충된 최신장비를 통해 지역민의 안과건강을 위해 최선을 다하겠다고 밝혔다. 또한, 망막과 녹내장 조기진단을 위한 생애주기별 안과건강검진 프로그램도 새롭게 선보일 예정이라 전했다. 지역주민들의 어두워진 빛을 다시 밝혀주고 싶다는 그의 바람이 오래도록 변함없기를 기대한다.

Normally, we say that ‘Being old comes along with being presbyopia’. Technically, we have an amazing medical improvements a lot, however, nobody can avoid the process. For this, what we can do is managing the healthy eye vision through a constant checkup as much as we can do and cope with any ophthalmologic disease by initial examination and appropriate treatment. However, Korea doesn’t have an eye clinic in everywhere, technically. So, Yesan Seoul Ophthalmology Clinic now could cure the three losing the eyesight over the world, cataract, macular degeneration, and glaucoma more systematically and professionally since he joined to head Dr. Oh, Jae-Yong who has over 10,000 times of cataract surgery and used to work in Baek Hospital before. 

“Will prove the best treatment for patients from their side all the time”
Director Lee, Joon-Sik’s profession is macular degeneration and glaucoma. Most of people think of serious eye disease is cataract but these diseases are one of major eye diseases cause blind eyes. Nowadays, it is reported the case of that it happens often in the middle of age group from 40~50’s and the young age group from 20~30’s. 
Director Lee, Joon-Sik explained, “The case of cataract is easily found out and the operation is not that difficult and the recovery is quite fast if there is no special problem. But, macular degeneration and glaucoma have no initial symptoms and many of patients miss the timing of operation. Also, there is no specific surgery method whatsoever.” So, his advice for the only way to prevent the blindness is the early detect and appropriate drug treatment. 
Director Lee, Joon-Sik used to perform in the surgery over 10,000 times and ten thousands of patents while he was working as a clinical instructor and he published over 23 papers and have been released one of worldwide eye science magazines in the world. Yet, there is a reason why he came down to Yesan behind the all fame like that. He felt sorry and sympathized when he was an army surgeon in Jeonui-myeon, Chungnam. He saw tons of local people who were suffering from eye check-up system and neglected from the main city. Director Lee, Joon-Sik said, “Back then, I was devastated because I couldn’t do anything for them with a poor environment and old medical equipment, but I could feel fulfilled and touched by local people as I built up the relationship. It was good to be a professor and work in the big hospital in Seoul, I have a dream to work in somewhere needs me desperately. So, I started thinking of doing this hospital with Dr. Oh having excellent and cutting edge medical equipment and machine.” 
Director Lee, Joon-Sik is a doctor who is pondering over the feelings and is trying to be on their side and consider how to release the pain. He said he would do the best for the local health issue with recent medical information and knowledge. Besides, he plans to suggest an eye care program to be applied with different life stage of each person. We expect that his hope that he would light people’s darkness will be unchanged.
