‘스포츠도시 보령’을 이끄는 주역, 보령시테니스협회
생활체육 활성화는 이미 거스를 수 없는 시대적 흐름이다. 인류의 기대수명이 연장되고, 삶의 질에 대한 관심이 높아짐에 따라 스스로의 ‘건강’을 지킬 수 있는 방법으로 일상 속에서 꾸준한 스포츠 활동을 영위하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하게 부각되고 있기 때문이다. 이에 보령시테니스협회는 지역사회에 건강한 스포츠문화를 전파하고, 생활체육으로서의 테니스의 저변을 확대해나가고자 최선의 노력을 다하고 있다.
지난 4월 제12대 협회장으로 취임한 김학동 회장은 “보령시는 대천해수욕장과 무창포해수욕장, 보령머드축제 등으로 이름난 관광휴양도시입니다. 그러나 몇 년 전까지만 해도 지역에 거주하는 주민들의 건강 증진을 위한 생활체육 인프라는 상대적으로 부족한 것이 사실이었습니다. 이에 보령시테니스협회는 건강한 지역 공동체를 만들어가기 위한 생활체육 문화 창달에 힘써왔으며, 역대 임원진들과 동호인 분들의 합심된 노력 끝에 지금은 충남 도내에서도 손꼽히는 협회로 자리매김하게 되었습니다”라고 밝혔다. 실제로 현재 협회에 소속된 회원은 약 900여명으로 10만 남짓한 시 인구수에 비해 상당한 비중을 차지하고 있으며, 연간 대회 개최 및 주관, 도민체전 참가 등 꾸준하고도 활발한 활동을 보여주고 있다. 
지난 2001년부터 매년 ‘보령머드축제’에 앞서 개최되는 「보령머드배 전국동호인 테니스대회」는 협회 활동의 정점이라 볼 수 있다. 개나리부와 혼합복식부, 통합오픈부, 통합신인부 등 4개 부문으로 나뉘어 경기가 펼쳐진 이번 대회에는 전국에서 총 800여 명의 선수들이 참가하여 그간 쌓아온 기량을 견주고, 화합과 친목을 다지는 시간을 가졌다. 올해로 벌써 17회째를 맞이하며 보령시를 전국에 알리는 역할을 톡톡히 해내고 있다는 평가를 받고 있지만, 다소 아쉬운 부분도 있다는 것이 김학동 회장의 생각이다. 그는 “대회 기간이 장마철과 겹치다보니 개최가 잇달아 연기되고, 신청자에 비해 참석률이 저조해지는 상황이 반복적으로 발생하고 있습니다. 이러한 문제를 해소하기 위해선, 우천 시에도 대회를 유치할 수 있는 실내 코트의 건립이 반드시 필요합니다. 또한, 이는 향후 전국대회 유치와 여성동호인 저변 확대에도 도움이 되리라 생각합니다”라고 의견을 피력했다.

“실내 테니스 구장 건립, 테니스 저변 확대와 지역 활성화에 보탬 될 것”
실내 코트 건립에 대한 김학동 회장의 열망과 노력은 곧 그 결실을 맺을 수 있을 듯하다. 보령시측과의 오랜 협의와 조율 끝에 올해 안에 종합운동장 공설코트 중 5면이 실내 돔구장으로 변모할 예정이기 때문이다. 지난 보령머드배 개회사에서 김동일 보령시장은 보령시를 ‘스포츠도시’로 도약시킬 것이라 천명하며, 올해 중 23억 원을 투자해 실내 돔구장을 건립할 계획이라 밝혔다. 이에 대해 김학동 회장은 “따가운 햇볕과 우천시, 한겨울 한파 속에서도 마음껏 운동할 수 있는 쾌적한 환경을 조성하는 것은 남녀노소 누구나 테니스를 즐길 수 있는 기반이 되리라 생각합니다. 이를 기점으로 지역사회 전반에 건강한 생활체육 문화를 보급하는 것은 물론, 전국대회 등의 외부 방문객 확대로 지역경제 활성화에도 기여하고자 합니다”라고 말했다. 이에 덧붙여 그는 테니스 외에도 지역주민들이 언제나 생활 가까운 곳에서 스포츠를 접할 수 있도록 체육시설을 고르게 확충하는 데에도 힘쓸 계획이라 전했다.
지난 6년여 간 보령중앙시장 상인회장으로써 시장 현대화를 위한 환경개선과 시설 확충, 주차장 건립 등 괄목할만한 성과를 거둬온 김학동 회장은 현재 보령시테니스협회장과 도시재생사업 위원장을 역임하며 보령시의 발전을 위해 헌신하고 있다. 특히, 그는 소수에 의한 독단적 의사결정이 아닌 구성원 모두의 단합과 화합, 의견 수렴과 조율을 통해 올바른 방향을 찾아나가는 것이 협회가 건강하게 발전하기 위한 방법이라 생각한다고 강조했다. 김 회장은 “저희 협회가 보령시를 넘어 충남에서도 가장 활동적인 모습을 보일 수 있었던 데에는 임원진과 동호인 모두가 ‘테니스 활성화’라는 큰 뜻에 힘을 모으고 단합했기 때문이라 생각합니다. 저희는 앞으로도 서로가 배려하고 존중하는 테니스 문화, 누구나 즐겁게 참여하는 테니스 협회를 만들어가기 위해 최선을 다하겠습니다”라고 밝혔다. 보령시테니스의 새로운 도약을 이끌고 있는 이들의 열정이 앞으로 어떤 결실을 맺게 될지 지켜보자.

Boryeong City Tennis Association – A leader in ‘sports city Boryeong’ 
Activity of living sports is now an irreversible trend of the times. As human’s life expectancy is lengthened with higher interest in the quality of life, it is considered most important to carry on a constant sports activity in everyday life because is the way for keeping one healthy. Accordingly, Boryeong City Tennis Association is making its best efforts to spread a healthy sports culture to community and expand the base of tennis as a living sport. 
Kim Hak-dong,, who took office as the 12th president of the Association last April, clarified, “Boryeong is a tourist and resort city famous for Daecheon and Moochangpo bathing resorts, Boryeong mud festival, etc. However, even a few years ago, it was true that the city was relatively wanting in the community sports infrastructure for increasing the health of local residents. So Boryeong City Tennis Association has striven to develop living sports culture for creating a healthy local community and after a joined effort of successive officers and club members, it has been in place as an important association even in the province of Choongnam.” Currently, the association has about 900 members, a high portion in a hundred thousand city population, performing a constant and lively activity holding and supervising annual contests, participating in the provincial sport games, etc.                     
<The National Club Tennis Competition for Boryeong Mud Cup> held annually in advance of <the Boryeong Mud Festival> since 2001 means the acme in the activity of the association. In this contest held with four divided sectors including forsythia, mixed double, united open and united rookie, a total of 800 players participated from around the country and had a time to compare the skills accumulated so far and strengthen harmony and friendship. Though the competition has performed the role of promoting Boryeong city to the whole country, marking the 17th this year, President Kim Hak-dong indicates a missing point, He said, “As the contest period overlaps with a rainy season, holding the meeting will be put off one after another and it happens that participation is repeatedly becoming lower compared to applicants. To resolve this problem, it is absolutely needed to build indoor courts that can attract a contest even in rainy days. This will be a help in expanding the base of women amateur tennis players, too.”

President Kim Hak-dong’s aspiration and efforts for building indoor courts are likely to bear fruits soon, for after a long consultation and coordination with Boryeong city, five sides of the sports complex public court is scheduled to turn into indoor dome courts within this year. In the opening speech at the last Boryeong Mud Cup, Botyeong Mayor Kim Dong-il made it clear to lift Boryeong into a sports city and announced a plan to build an indoor dome court by investing 2.3 billion won before the end of this year. Referring to this, president Kim Hak-dong said, “Building a pleasant environment where we play sports to our heart’s content even under the prickly sun, rainy days and cold wave in mid-winter will be the basis for anyone and everyone to enjoy tennis. Starting with this, I am planning to spread a healthy living sports culture to the whole community and contribute to the activity of local economy by increasing visitors from outside with a national competition, etc. In addition, he said he would endeavor to expand sports facilities evenly besides tennis so that local residents may come in contact with sports in the neighborhood of living all the time. 
President Kim Hak-dong, who has reaped a notable result as president of the merchants’ association at Boryeong Central Market for the past six years by improving environment, expanding facilities and building parking lots to modernize the market, is currently devoted to the development of Boryeong city by serving as presidents of Boryeong city tennis association and committee for urban regeneration project. Especially, he emphasized that it must be the way for the healthy development of the association to find the right direction through the unity, harmony, collection of ideas and coordination of all the members, rather than an arbitrary decision-making by a small number. President Kim clarified, “I think it is because both officers and club members have stood together focusing on the ambition for ‘activating tennis’ that our association has been most active even in Choongnam above Boryeong city. We will do our best to build a tennis culture in mutual consideration and respect and the tennis association in which anyone can participate readily.” Let’s watch what fruit the passion of those who are leading the way to a new take-off of Boryeong tennis is going to bear in the future.
