The speech and voice that connects heart to heart
CEO Moon Si-jung of The Pint

Customized speech is needed to meet different personalities and circumstances
President Moon’s speech at the Korean War memorial commemorating the Changjin Reservoir Battle made many attendees shed a tear on the day. Moon said “My parents were also there among the refugees on SS Meredith Victory” and added that his life was deeply connected to their sacrifices. The U.S. President Donald Trump praised the Moon’s speech “Great and touching” and the speech actually was received by many to have raised national status of S. Korea. Some might wondered what made the speech so touching. And CEO Moon Si-jung of ¡¸The Pint¡¹ throws the same question but with answers.

In general terms, the speaker, audience and contents are regarded as the ‘three basic elements’ of speech. Yet many speech instructors have rather focused on the technique to deliver the contents of the speech by using emphasis and gestures. The problem is that this stereotyped method has neglected the personality of the speaker, the characteristics of the audience group and the environment of the speech.

“Contents in fact are very important as shown in President Moon’s speech where opinion, fact and story are well melted into. Facts alone can make audience bored while opinion dogmatic and story missing the point” analyzes Moon. In other words, a little bit of study on one (speaker)’s personality, the type of the audience group and the contents of the speech will help greatly to make a speech as successful as President Moon.

“How to speak is more important than technique. A good speaker knows how to connect heart to heart of audience in easy and simple words. And always remember that a good speech comes from the heart not from the brain.”

It is said that most people can express only 50% of what they really meant to say in communication. These people are likely to be left behind in promotion and cannot be able to create synergy effect in the organization they belong. The approach, therefore, must be different person by person, according to Moon.

“It is advisable that the strong personalities must admit first the fact that people are ‘different’ while the perfectionists need to be relaxed. It is also notable that some people like Trump’s speech and some don’t. The point is the speaker must know whom he/she is speaking to.”

Creating values together with clients
CEO Moon established The Pint in June 2016. Understanding the drawbacks of stereotyped speech training in the market, Moon has focused on customized speech methods.

“We say ‘it’s out of pint’ – Korean phrase of ‘out of focus’ – when someone seems to be confused of what he/she is saying. This is because the teller lacks in understanding of the audience and the environment as well as the pros and cons of his/her personality. And this is the point where The Pint can give a help. The program called ‘Value Co-creation Partner’ of The Pint is an ultimate tool to equip a person to be a good speaker.”

The Pint analyzes one’s personality first to move onto to pros and cons. Then it builds strategic images by additional analysis on type of audience groups, the purpose of speech and the speech environment. As the final stage, the customized voice, image, technique and gesture training is brought up.

Apart from the speech training, The Pint also boasts its professionalism in management, service and education consulting which was well received, for example, by the Busan City Corporation and Woongjin Thinkbig. As a diligent CEO herself, Moon is launching soon ‘Mediarapha’, a media training customized for politicians and entrepreneurs.

“Media training is widely practiced in many advanced countries especially for representatives and executives as their speech can have a great impact on the image of the business.”

To share her knowledge and experience with more people, Moon also is publishing a self-voice training book <Encyclopedia of Voice> within November this year with anticipated new voice training courses coming in December, and March next year.
