한국 절수기시장의 3대장 중 하나이자 정상의 기술력으로 꼽히는 비젼테크는 최근 새로운 CEO를 맞이했다. 20년 전부터 절수기 원천기술로 유명했던 메이테크의 이두현 대표가 국내 대기업 협력사로 유명한 비젼테크를 인수하면서, 기존의 페달형 절수기 시대가 저물어 감에 따라 새로운 초음파 센서형 절수기의 시대를 여는 데 박차를 가할 예정이다. 신기술 연구개발에 대한 공통의 열정을 가진 대표 기업 비젼테크와 이 대표의 랑데부는 그전에 없던 유형의 절수기로 국내를 넘어 세계시장의 문을 두드리고, 건설사들의 재건축 붐을 타고 대량 공급되어 미래의 국내 물 공급부족 현황을 긍정적으로 바꿀 것이라는 전망이다. 

페달형 절수기에서 업그레이드된 다기능 센서형 절수기 시대를 여는 ‘원조’ 선도기업

국내 3대 절수기 회사로 꼽히며 2005년 설립된 비젼테크는 아파트, 호텔객실 등 건설업계 다수와 협력한 절수기 전문업체이다. 10여 년 간 상수도 낭비를 30%이상 줄이는 절수기라는 단일 품목만으로 연간 40-50억 원의 매출을 올려 온 비젼테크는, 최근 신기술 개발이 정체된 틈을 타 제조기술개발 없이 페달식 절수기를 도용하는 업체들이 난무하면서 원천기술 개발 필요성을 절감하게 되었다. 그래서 페달식 절수페달의 원천기술자로 제품을 상용화시킨 장본인이자, 이후 독립하여 건설자재인 절수페달을 개발하고 판매해 온 메이테크의 이두현 대표가 최근 비젼테크를 인수하게 된다. 절수페달의 원리를 응용해 타이머로 제어하면서 커피머신의 불규칙한 사출용량과 위생문제를 해결한 디지털 콜드브루 커피머신을 개발해 판매한 이 대표는 향후 당분간 새로운 절수기 개발에 매진할 뜻을 밝히고 있다. 이 대표는 연구소와 전용 회로제작 전문가를 둔 비젼테크와 후발주자보다 항상 앞서가는 R&D의 메이테크가 만나 큰 시너지 효과를 낼 것이라고 전망하고 있다. 
절수페달의 특허를 출원한 지 10여 년이 지나 해금되면서 기술력보다는 영업을 우선으로 한 업체들이 등장해 성능에 맞는 가격책정이 이뤄지지 않고, 카피 제품 기업의 창업과 폐업으로 최소 3년은 보장되어야 할 AS에도 문제가 생기니 건설업체들은 신기술과 안전성, AS능력을 갖춘 업체를 찾게 되었다고 한다. 그런 상황에서 절수기 시장에서 20년 잔뼈가 굵은 이 대표는 10년이 넘도록 100만 개가 넘는 수주를 받은 비젼테크의 영업력 덕분에, 자신이 가진 절수기 관련 사용권과 특허, 원천기술을 응용한 신기술로 1군 건설사 등에서 5년 이상의 수주를 미리 따 놓은 메이테크의 시장 추가진입도 순조롭다고 밝혔다. 이 대표는 메이테크 시절 저가형 페달식 절수기시장의 문제를 극복하고자, 3대 절수기회사인 진명과 손을 잡고 인체가 접근하기만 해도 반응하는 센서형 절수기를 3년 전 개발한 상태다. 첫 단계인 초음파센서형은 테스트 단계에서 시행착오를 통해 추가된 신기술 적용 가능성을 보여주었고, 센서 방식은 페달식에 익숙한 후발주자들이 섣불리 따라할 수 없다고 한다. 그래서 이 대표는 앞으로 레이저초음파, 자외선 작동 살균기능을 포함한 센서형 절수기가 더 나오게 되면 기존의 모든 페달형 절수기의 자리를 대체하게 될 것이라고 전망한다. 

R&D에만 기업매출의 20% 투자하는 각고의 노력으로 신소재 접목 성공

메이테크 시절 R&D에만 매출의 20%나 투자하였으며 지금도 5개 이상의 신제품을 개발하고 있는 이 대표는 자신이 개발한 페달형 시장의 틀을 극복하고자 한다. 우선 이 대표는 손으로 사용하는 거부감을 줄였던 페달형은 사용하기 편한 대신, 물을 절약하는 수치값이 정해진 대로 출고되어 사용자가 절약 정도를 실감하기 어려웠다고 분석한다. 그래서 사용자가 임의로 수치를 조절할 수 있고, 얼마나 절약되는지 육안으로 확인하며 상용화 단계에서 쉽게 설치할 수 있도록 개선하는 작업이 약 80% 정도 진행됐다고 밝혔다. 또한 앞으로는 장비 안에 들어가는 밸브를 획기적으로 바꾸는 것이 중요하다고 강조한다. 
기존의 밸브는 독일의 기술인 솔레노이드(solenoid)형이자 세탁기에 최적화되어 있는데, 이 기술이 도입된 18년 간 수압 저하라는 문제로 일반 주택에 호환되지 않는 점이 개선된 적이 없었다는 것을 알게 된 이 대표는 이를 핵심기술로 지정해 연구했다. 그래서 밸브에 신기술이 적용된 이 제품은 진동수에 비례하는 각도만큼 회전하는 원리의 스테핑 모터(stepping motor) 및 세라믹 디스크 방식을 활용하고 있다. 더욱이 기존의 솔레노이드밸브 방식에 많은 건설사들이 식상함을 느끼는 동시에, 개발 원가를 오래 전 회수했음에도 요지부동인 기존 가격대 문제 해결을 요구하고 있어, 비슷한 가격대로 출시될 이 기술혁신 제품은 앞으로 절수기 시장의 강자를 구분하는 잣대가 될 것이다. 이 대표는 센서형의 1세대인 초음파감지 센서까지만 타사 협력을 구축한 뒤, 앞으로 이 기술을 발전시킨 레이저와 자외선살균센서는 비젼테크의 이름으로 독자적인 출시를 할 것이라고 전한다. 그러므로 수주가 완료되고 건축이 끝나는 데는 대략 3년 정도 소요되기에, 2020년경에는 새로운 센서형이 절수기 시장의 대세를 이룰 것이다. 이런 절수기가 1천 세대 이상의 아파트에 전국적으로 확산되는 분위기를 정부에서도 긍정적으로 보고 있기 때문이다. 

새로운 아이템 빌트인 건조기로 해외브랜드협력, 수출판로증대 전망 밝아
비젼테크를 인수하면서 기존 직원들도 순조롭게 승계, 인수한 이 대표는 기업 운영에 있어 제일 필요한 것이 인력 관리라고 강조한다. 업계 20년 차인 이 대표는 직원들에게 베풀수록 회사가 성장한다는 지론을 갖고 있다. 그래서 이 대표는 영업부에서 오더를 따내면 성과급을 지급하고, 서울권역 AS기사 8명을 비롯한 현장 직원들에게는 설치수당과 잔업비, 별도의 보너스를 책정해 3개월 경력에도 동종업계 180%의 급여를 수령하는 직원들도 있다고 한다. 또한 ‘내 회사’라는 소속감은 고용안정과 합당한 대우에서 오기에, 이 대표는 1억 원의 성과급제를 제안하며 팀장을 비롯한 직원들에게 직급과 업무성과에 따라 가져갈 수 있도록 했다. 그 결과 직원들의 업무성과와 책임감이 높아져, 이 대표는 내년 2배의 매출을 예상하며 해외 시장 진출에도 자신감을 보인다. 이미 절수기를 베트남에 수출하고 있으며, 사우디, 태국 등과 추가 계약을 앞둔 이 대표는 신기술개발에 현지 상황을 중요하게 고려한다. 각 나라마다 물의 열기와 석회 함유정도가 달라 일반 플라스틱재를 섣불리 사용할 수 없기에, 그는 침전과 부식 문제를 해결할 데이터를 얻고자 열과 충격, 불순물에 강하며 석유시추장비에도 사용되는 고분자소재 폴리케톤(polyketone)을 도입해 연구했다. 이 과정에서 이 대표는 기존 장치와 호환되지 않아 가스 과다누출로 사출기가 폭발하는 상황을 극복하며 인체에 무해하고 내구성도 보장되는 최적의 균형을 찾아냈다. 그럼에도 이 대표는 특허를 믿고 한 제품만 밀다 보면 후발주자들이 R&D대신 기술을 복제하는 상황을 피할 수 없기에, 신규아이템인 아파트 빌트인 세탁물건조기를 개발하게 되었다고 밝혔다. 기능이 비슷한 기존 중국제 빌트인 건조기는 40-50만 원선인데, 이 대표는 절수기와 건조기를 빌트인 세트로 계약할 수 있어 가격대를 파격적으로 낮추었다고 한다. 해외 시장을 개척하기 위해 이 대표는 중국제 대신 해외 시장에서 인기가 높은 ‘한국제’를 표방하려는 매출 1천억 단위의 태국 홈쇼핑 업체에 기술협력을 제시해 의기투합할 수 있었다. 이렇게 기존의 하강식 온풍형 건조기를 더 편리하게 개조하여 중국 회사와 계약한 빌트인 세탁물 건조기는 올해 시제품 제작을 마친 상태다. 이 대표는 이미 태국에서 받은 초기주문물량 1만 개만으로도 투자비용을 건진 만큼 욕심내지 않고, 적은 마진으로 박리다매하는 것으로 시장을 개척해 회사를 점진적으로 키우겠다는 전략을 준비하고 있다. 이렇게 늘 준비되고 앞서간 전략을 제시하기 때문일까. 합리적인 선도기업을 표방하며 과감한 투자로 업계를 선도한 기술개발자 겸 경영자 이 대표의 발걸음은 늘 희망차고 가볍다.

Vision Tech is one of the three representative water saver manufacturers in Korea. It was established in 2005 and has worked in cooperation with number of apartment and hotel rooms constructors. Vision Tech developed a water saver that has reduced water leakage more than 30% for the last 10 years and earned yearly KRW 4 billion to 5 billion sales. The company opened its eye to the need of developing original technologies by observing rival companies stealing pedal-type water saver. CEO Lee Du-hyun of May Tech, which commercialized the original technology of the pedal-type water saver, recently took over Vision Tech. Lee developed a digital cold brewer by using the principle of water saving pedal that solved irregular shooting capacity and hygienic issues of coffee machine. He recently showed his will to focus on development of new water savers. Lee, who boasts 20 years of experience in the field of water saving, predicts that the research institute and the circuit specialists of Vision Tech and the proactive R&D of May Tech will create a big synergy effect. Vision Tech received more than 1 million orders for the last 10 years and May Tech has secured more than 5 years of orders from companies including Daewoo E&C. Lee developed a body sensor-type water saver 3 years ago in cooperation with Jinmyeong, one of the three water saving device companies. The ultrasonic wave sensor-type at the initial stage showed possibilities of new technology application and the sensor method cannot be copied by the second movers. Lee predicts that the release of sensor-type water saver which realizes laser ultrasonic wave and ultraviolet ray sterilization functions will replace all existing pedal-type water savers. 

Succeeding application of new materials with 20% of whole profits into R&D
When in May Tech, CEO Lee poured 20% of the sales into R&D and currently is developing 5 new products. Lee says that the existing pedal-type is easy to use but the saving rate is set. So he has pushed forward the development of a saving rate adjustable water saver which is in the 80% of completion at the moment. He also emphasizes the importance of innovatively changing the valve that is put into the device. The existing valve was solenoid (German technology) which is optimized for washing machines but it has been incompatible with normal houses due to the issues on low water pressure for 18 years since the introduction. So Lee took it as a core technology and carried on a research. This new technology-applied product uses stepping motor (rotating up to the angles proportional to the number of vibration) and ceramic disc method. Also, this new technology-applied product will be released in the similar price of the existing solenoid valve. Lee plans to work together with a partner company up to the first generation ultrasonic detection and to carry on solely the development of laser and ultraviolet ray sterilization sensor under the name of Vision Tech. It is said that the new sensor-type will lead the water saver market by 2020 and the government sees it positive to install this kind of water saver in more than 1,000 apartment households. 

Overseas brand cooperation with a new item built-in drier, bright prospect for export outlet expansion
Lee says that human resource is most needed when running a company. Lee thinks that the more he gives to employees the bigger the company grows. Lee pays bonus according to the number of orders received and installation and overtime benefit to on-site employees with more than 3 month employment including after sales service workers also can receive 180% salary when compared to the same workers in the field. Also, bonus is paid to all employees according to their performance. As a result, Lee is expecting double the amount of sales next year and pioneering overseas markets. The water saver is already being exported to Vietnam and additional contract is expected to be signed with Saudi Arabia and Thailand. As water in each country is different in substances, Lee introduced polyketone for a research in a way to secure data that can solve precipitation and corrosion. During the process, Lee found the optimum balance that overcomes explosion of catapult due to excessive gas leak, and that is harmless and has durability. But to prevent the copy of the newly developed technologies by the rivals, Lee has succeeded development of a new item apartment built-in laundry drier. The Chinese built-in driers with similar functions cost around KRW 400,000 to 500,000 but Lee reduced the price significantly by one contract for water saver and drier built-in. Lee suggested technical cooperation to a home shopping company of Thailand boasting KRW 100 billion sales and they have had a mutual understanding. Lee already has made up of the investment fund by receiving 10,000 unit orders from Thailand and is planning to grow the business through volume sales at a low unit margin of profit. It seems that Lee’s passion and driving force can only make Vision Tech as a rational leading company in the water saving industry and the future seems to be bright.
