유럽의 왕실예술학교들은 언제나 빈민가와 개발도상지역의 아동에게 최우선으로 입학자격 혜택을 주며 인재들을 모아 예술가, 예술교육자 및 관련 업계 종사자로 길러냈다. 반면 엘리트교육으로 발전한 한국 클래식계는 수요와 공급이 서로 맞지 않아 관련학과 입학생이 매년 줄고 있는데, 이를 극복하기 위한 자성의 소리와 꾸준한 프로그램 개발로 대중들의 요구에 부응하는 교육기관들이 있다. 교육부와 경기도로부터 음악교육 분야 우수기관으로 선정된 대진대학교 평생교육원 문화예술콘서바토리, 대진상생교육센터 강필수 교수의 선정비결과 그 배경을 되짚어 보면, 현대의 음악교육기관이 추구해야 할 올바른 대안이 무엇인지를 알게 된다.

콘서바토리 내 전공심화과정 2개, 1대1 수업으로 실용음악가 성장 기틀 마련

대진대학교 평생교육원 문화예술콘서바토리(이하 콘서바토리)는 정규학점이수제인 유니버시티, 컬리지와 달리 선택학점은행제로 운영되는 학점 전문기관이다. 여느 음대 학과들의 감소현황과 달리 콘서바토리 수강생들은 동 대학 음악학부 99학번 출신이자 서울대IFP 1기 과정을 수료한 강필수 교수가 제안한 운영 체계 덕분에 매년 증가하고 있다. 강 교수는 지난 3년 전 14명의 정원으로 출범한 콘서바토리의 학생이 65명으로 늘어난 비결은 바로 ‘학생들이 원하는 수업 개설’이라고 전한다. 강 교수는 극소수만이 연주자로 성공하는 클래식음악보다 대중실용음악 및 재즈, 밴드뮤직 악기 연주 파트 및 뮤지컬 연기학과 위주로 커리큘럼을 개편하고, 학교 측을 설득하여 1대1 레슨이 가능할 만큼 강의진을 섭외했다. 또한 부전공, 전공심화로 나뉘어 보컬, 악기들 파트의 추가수업도 들을 수 있어, 콘서바토리가 학원처럼 운영된다는 편견을 뚫고 다양한 분야에 강한 뮤지션을 양상하고 있다. 더불어 강 교수는 이렇게 음악을 전공한 학생들을 위해 대진대평생교육원교수 및 음악관계자 4명과 힘을 합쳐, 스타보다는 아티스트를 양성하기 위한 목적으로 홍대역 인근에 에이톤 엔터테인먼트를 설립했다. 
일반 대학에서 학교 내 강의에서만 학점을 받을 수 있는 것과 달리 콘서바토리의 심화수업은 교외에서도 가능하기 때문에, 강 교수는 이곳을 수업·연습장소로 활용하며 한 학기당 원하는 심화과목을 선택해 11과목까지 이수할 수 있을 것이라 한다. 특히 사무실과 연습실, 안무실, 녹음실, 휴식 공간을 모두 갖춘 이 공간은 콘서바토리 출신 학생들의 장래를 밝게 한다. 실제로 입학생 중 보이그룹 4명, 솔로여가수 1명이 연습생으로 활동 중이며, 에이톤에서는 카페 등에서 활용될 BGM부터 프로 가수들의 음반 취입용도까지 다양한 장르의 곡들을 매달 15-20곡 씩 작곡하며 대중음악 계로 학생들을 진출시킬 연결고리를 갖고 있다. 강 교수는 혹여 음악에서 적성을 찾지 못하지만 학점이수조건을 충족할 경우, 학점은행규정에 맞는 타 학과로 휴학·군대 등 공실인원이 생길 시 추천서로 편입 또는 전과 할 수 있도록 하여 예술행정에서 유연성이 있다는 평가를 받는다.

장학제도와 지역사회 평생학습지원, 아트코딩으로 음악교육의 신 성장 거점 될 것

콘서바토리 교수, 에이톤 엔터테인먼트 외에도 강 교수는 비영리민간단체인 글로리아음악공간 대표 운영을 계기로, 교육부 공모사업제안에 통과한 49개 대학 중 하나로서 기업과 기관이 협력하는 상생교육센터를 2012년부터 대진대 내에 개설해 활동 중이다. 여기서 강 교수는 교육부의 지원금 약1억 원으로 악기를 구입 또는 대여하여, 현재 2천여 명의 초·중학생들이 최소한의 강의료만 지불하고 무료로 바이올린, 첼로 등 고가에 속하는 무료로 악기를 대여 받아 방과후 수업을 받을 수 있었다고 한다. 이 프로그램은 어릴 때 클래식에 흥미가 있는 소외지역 및 차상위계층이, 정부의 지원을 받는 계층보다도 의외로 기악 입문이 어려운 사각지대에 있기에 강 교수가 내린 결정이었다. 이렇게 시작된 방과 후 오케스트라수업은 ‘안녕! 오케스트라’에서 시작되어 ‘달려라 오케스트라’까지 진행되어, 조만간 4차산업 시대에 적합한 ‘아트코딩’을 주제로 태블릿PC를 활용한 터치스크린 작곡, 연주, 그림그리기로 구성된 방과후프로그램 ‘태블릿PC와 함께하는 예술학교’를 선보일 예정이다. 그동안 지자체와 학교가 협력하여 어린이들은 무료로 배우고, 제자들에게는 교육자로 활약할 수 있는 기회를 주며 음악발전 및 사람중심의 교육 복지시스템을 정착시키는 이 프로그램들은 문화예술 공유의 가치를 널리 알렸다고 한다. 
덕분에 대진상생교육센터는 경기도 선정 사회적경제 스타기업, 교육부육성사업 방과후학교 사회적기업 서울·경기부의 A등급, 2015년 교육부선정 대학주도 방과후학교 우수기관 등에 차례로 선정되었다. 강 교수는 더 나아가 장학제도인 ‘두드림 산학연계 장학제도’를 많은 학생들이 활용하기 바란다고 전했다. 이는 연 800만 원에 가까운 학비를 하루 3시간 근무하며 지원받는 제도로, 매 학기 기숙사/식대 80여 만 원 선으로 학비와 주거비가 해결되기에 지방 거주자들도 부담 없이 대중예술가의 꿈을 이룰 수 있게 된다고 한다. 학벌중심 구조를 뚫고 음악과 사회 간의 상생을 실천한 강 교수의 좋은 시스템과 프로그램을 통해 조만간 탄생될 K팝스타들의 성장을 응원하고 기대해 본다.

2 intensive courses and face to face teaching build foundation for music talents to grow
Daejin University Lifelong Learning Center Culture and Art Conservatory is run based on academic credit bank system. Professor Gang Pil-su is a graduate of the conservatory (the class of ‘99) and finished the Seoul National University IFP course. He is the one who suggested the current curriculum and the number of students of the conservatory, as a result, is increasing year by year. The conservatory started with 13 students three years ago and the number has increased to 65. Gang ascribes this rapid growth to the student-centered curriculum with focus on pop music and face to face lessons. Students can deepen their knowledge and skills in their major while also can take minor courses. Also, Gang and 4 specialists established A-Tone Entertainment near Hongik University Station with a goal to foster artists instead of stars. The intensive courses of the conservatory can be taught outside of the school and Gang is using A-Tone for classes and students can take up to 11 subjects per semester. A-Tone has practice rooms, dance rooms, recording rooms and resting areas. Four students of boy groups and a solo female singer are actively taking the lessons at the moment and A-Tone also produces 15 to 20 songs in various genres every month. Students can change their major if needed or make a transfer to other university when meet the required credits. 

Growing as the hub of music education through scholarship, lifelong learning and art coding
Daejin University is one of the 49 universities which passed the joint project suggestion of The Ministry of Education and the university has run Win-Win Education Center since 2012. The ministry supported KRW 100 million to Daejin University to buy musical instruments and about 2,000 elementary and middle school students can rent an instrument or more for free after school. The after school program first started under the title ‘Hello! Orchestra’ which developed to ‘Run Orchestra’. The university is soon to introduce an ‘art coding’ themed programs by making the most of touch screen composition, playing and drawing technologies in preparation of opening ‘Art School Goes Tablet PC’. In recognition of the contribution the center has made, the Daejin Win-Win Education Center is appointed as a social economy star company by Gyeonggi Province, secured A grade after school social enterprise Seoul and Gyeonggi Province and also chosen as an excellent university-led after school institute by The Ministry of Education in 2015. Gang advised students to use ‘Dudream Industry-University Scholarship’ in which a student can receive a support of yearly KRW 8 million tuition fee by working 3 hours a day. It means that the costs for dormitory and meals during a semester can be covered by KRW 800,000 won. For this reason, it is especially good for students from provinces. It seems that the effective training systems of the center will soon produce talented K-Pop stars.
