[Korean Folk Belief] ‘Finding mediums of our time’ (3)
“I look at your fate but give you hope”
‘Yeoulmanshin’ embraces your heart

Living a second life that seemed no way!

Yeoulmanshin was different from others since she was a child: she heard the sound, saw something or revelation in her dream which others could not. Her parents were divorced when she was 3 and she grew under the care of her farther and regularly went to church. She suffered from spiritual diseases and burst out her worlds when seeing people. Strange it was, her father found out that her grandmother was a shaman. He did not want his daughter walking the same path so he sent her to church.

“I dreamed one day. An old man appeared and said that my father’s mother has time to go. I dreamed the same dream after 3 days. I asked him to save her life and he said that I should give a ritual and so I did.” But the ritual went wrong as it was ‘nulim ritual’ and the grandmother passed away. Soon after, her youngest sister who bore twins in her womb miscarried. Her own daughter also suffered from cerebromeningitis that could possibly kill her. This was the moment that she desperately sought ‘spirit’ but not Christian god to save her daughter. Strange it was, her daughter soon recovered. Yet it was impossible for her to be a shaman as ardent Christian she was. But things turned out better when she took the rather unfavorable way.

“The year I was possessed by the spirit changed everything and things went well like a ship sailing on a kind breeze. People around me enjoyed better life financially and above all my first son who constantly suffered from various diseases miraculously became clean of everything.”

“Give first and it will return back to you”
Reborn as new pupil of the spirit who embraces hearts of people

“A mother with her daughter paid a visit to me one day. I asked whether she could have a son also and she said yes. I saw her son keep saying ‘where’s my favorite jacket?’ and I asked the mother. Then she burst her tears out and said ‘He killed himself at the age of 20 and I had no idea why he did it. Seeing the jacket gave me memory of him and I gave it to a staff of my husband’s company.’ Then I said that you seemed to have made a mistake and she said back that the person who took the jacket was in intensive care unit due to an accident. I told her I might have to take the jacket to burn it and then I shed tears with her on the day. “

Yeoulmanshin advises to put down all desires and walk a truthful way.

“I always tell myself ‘stick to my guns’ like when I was first possessed by the spirit. I feel the spirit has come to save someone’s life. And I give first what I have and the given returns back to me.”

Many times, she gave travel cost to her client if she reckoned that he/she seemed hard up. She even sent rice, snacks and toys to her client with a child on a regular basis. She never thought earthly things are hers to keep and she never has used the fee she received in return of her advice and ritual for personal occasion except for the goods needed for the spirit. This touched many of her clients and the number is still increasing thanks to her good heart and deed.

Passing down the tradition of Hwanghaedo Ritual

The dance and music-driven ritual is melted with joys and sorrows of our lives. The shaman prays to the spirit that the deceased will go to heaven and the livings to avoid misfortune. Yeoulmanshin was passed down of Hwanghaedo Manshin Ritual from her spiritual mother Kim Mae-mul manshin (President of Hwanghaedo Ritual Preservation Society Handdeut Community). Hwanghaedo Ritual has characteristics of splendid colors and variety of the ritual costume which span from tens to hundreds. Manshin, symbolizing spiritualistic shaman, leads the jakdo ritual for several days with abundant music and dance. It is regarded as a difficult ritual among shamans but the value and fame of the ritual makes it one of the representative rituals of Korea.

Many Hwanghaedo manshins who sought refuge in Incheon during the Korean War formed a community to share the sufferings but the tradition might gradually disappear as the members of the community are leaving the earthly world one by one. Yet because of this, the spiritual daughters of Hwanghaedo manshin like Yeoulmanshin have a sense of duty to pass down the tradition. For this reason, the members of the Hwanghaedo Ritual Preservation Society are actively engaging themselves in social contribution and international exchanges over Korea. Yeoulmanshin is relatively young among the members but has rather calm personality.

“Some shamans are reported on media with bad images. But they are literally only ‘some’ as majority of shamans are not like them. I can tell that I’m one of the latter and I will do my best to prove this as an authentic shaman and a truthful mother.” I hope people who pay a visit in seeking of my advice will find a hope.”
