[Art] Artist Yoo Sun-hee
Natural colors found in hearty pictures
Yoo leads the Dye Color Sketch Society
“I like the feelings of touching the pen, canvas and paint. I’m happy to have made my dream of becoming an artist finally come true and thankful to the God who created this beautiful and mysterious world. As an artist, I shift those beauty and mystery onto the canvas and wish to spread wisdom and technique of Koreans to the world through folksy subjects like traditional house and flowers.’ – Artist’s note –
Yoo leads the Dye Color Sketch Society
Yoo wished to be an artist since she was a child. She drew pictures on the walls of her school and traveled to Seoul from Gangwon Province to see an exhibition. Her artistic talent was recognized when in high school by an art teacher but her family could not suffice her dream financially.
She married to a pastor and led her life as a mother of 2 children while working as a public servant at the same time. One day, she saw an ad pined on the notice board of her office saying “Wouldn’t it be great if you could draw a picture and hang it on the wall of your living room?” It was the ad of the Dye Color Sketch Society, an art club of Yangcheon District, Seoul. She worked the day and drew the night and she has developed and boasted her skill and style every year at the Yangcheon District Office Dye Color Sketch Society Exhibition since 2011.
“I usually paint nature in oil. I hope people can feel the love of God through the beauty of nature he created and I would like to show my gratitude to my colleagues and believers of Open Blessing Church who always have given me a support” says Yoo.
Holding solo exhibition at Yangcheon District Culture Center
“It is not easy for a public servant like me to draw pictures and hold an exhibition every year. But ironically, this actually makes my drawing and exhibition more special.”
Yoo currently is the president of the Dye Color Sketch Society and a member of Hanol Sketch Society and the Korean Fine Arts Association Yangcheon. She held a solo exhibition last March at Yangcheon District Culture Center and received a great response from viewers. The exhibition was meaningful as it marked her 30 years of wedding anniversary and 37 years of her life as a public servant.
“I hope more opportunities will be provided for artists and wishes the Korean Fine Arts Association prosperity.”
Debut as a poet of Creation Literary
Last year, Yoo debuted as a poet of the Creation Literary. She showed as much interest in writing as in pictures since she was a child. On recommendation of her acquaintance, she submitted her literary works and received a new writer’s prize from the Creation Literary and published a book.
The Creation Literary says “Her poem ‘Pumpkin Flower’ identifies the flower with a mother and depicted the star as ‘orange star has risen’, an excellent metaphor. ‘Quince’, on the other hand, indicates an image of Korean women by comparing the honest image with the true taste of the fruit.”
When asked about her future plan, Yoo said “I would like to draw pictures that can interpret the love of the God. We live in despair or pride when comparing our life with others. But we can see the beauty of life by carefully observing nature and can realize everything has its beauty no matter how small it might look. I hope my art works can give people a peace and comfort.”
