“I came to know the charm of seogak in the high time of calligraphy. Grabbing a carving knife shook my heart with different energy from grabbing a brush. I liked the heavy sense of a hammer hitting the end of the knife and it stimulated the energy in my body. My left arm drives through each flow of brush stroke while the right one hit in short and long in the rhythm of the body. Then I forget everything. Many years past, I started to share my technique with local residents at a culture center where I live and am planning to expand scope of my art to the world over Korea.” – Artist’s note –

Seogak artist Go Jung-soon has walked a single path for more than 20 years. Her talent in calligraphy was well received by her teacher when she was an elementary school student. As is always the case for many people, she led a rather normal life as a housewife despite her artistic talent since then. But knowning Songhun Ahn Min-gwan (deceased), the originator of Korean modern seogak who organized the three modern seogak artists’ group exhibition for the first time in Korea, brought a change to her life and she took the way as a seogak artist in earnest under the instruction of Ahn. 

Taking a look at the nickname ‘Aru’, the former means ‘beautiful’ and the latter means ‘fort’ and she interprets it that she is destined to be a seogak artist. The Chinese words ä°×¤ (Aru) contains a number of radicals meaning ‘woman’, ‘rice fields’ and ‘soil’ and she also interprets them to represent her life now: she lives and works in her house surrounded by nature. 

Go likes Korean calligraphy as she started Korean alphabet first before Chinese. She says “I’m Korean so it’s only natural for me to express it freely in many forms. The rotated factor pattern, for example, gives me an archaic feel while modern calligraphy a heaviness and a speed. I simply just love it.” 

Talking about the charm of Go’s style, we must not miss pointing out the unique color and typeface and her reinterpretation of traditional Korean alphabet.

Go has participated in 10 exhibitions held by the Korea Seogak Association since 2000. It is notable that one of her works has become a permanent collection of the Sungkyunkwan University Museum after the 14th Special Seogak Artists Invitation Exhibition in 2004. And in 2013, her works were appeared in the 7th curriculum art textbooks of middle school. 

Having built her fame in speed in the seogak world for last 20 years, she now is living in her husbands’ hometown and pouring out her passion in teaching calligraphy and seogak for local residents from all age groups from children to elderly people in their 60s to 80s. For this reason, Go is giving a customized lesson according to each of their age groups. 

Go says that calligraphy and seogak is not separate things but one body. The only difference is the tools used: a brush for the former and a carving knife for the latter. It is important to follow up the texture of the wood and bending body forward according to the direction of the writing or carving, she adds. 

“You should make your body dancing in calligraphy”, emphasizes Go. Rather than focus your energy on hands, you should focus it on your whole body so that the energy gets transmitted to the tip of the brush. Lighten up your butt and lower your body, then the body moves itself according to each form of letters and you should always be ready to dance with calligraphy and seogak, advises Go. 

Widening the scope of styles

One might feel a sense of freedom by appreciating Go’s unconventional works. She tries to avoid petty trick and gives instead a sense of comfort to appreciators. Some say that her uniqueness comes from her left-handed writing and the uniqueness has been well received by listing her works in ‘Korean Seogak Yearbook’, ‘Korean Calligraphers and Literary Painters Digest’ and ‘Art History Association of Korea 50th Anniversary’ and some of her works are being displayed in Ginza Gallery (Japan) and Xiamen Museum (China). She also participated in the International Seogak Exhibition where visitors can meet works of Korean and Singaporean as well as other world seogak artists. 

When asked about future plan, Go said that she planned to make English seogak or gilt seogak in the future in a way to communicate with more people in the world.
