[Top Issue] Lee Seok-woo, mayor of Namyangju city

Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, sets spurs to holding ‘2017 Slow Life Festival’ at the end of September!
Mayor Lee Seok-woo, “This event will diffuse the values of health, environment and sympathy.”

Gyeonggi-do Namyangju, a slow-life city in Korea, is going to hold ‘2017 Slow Life Festival’ from the 22nd through the 26th of this September. This Slow Life Festival will be carried on at Namyangju Culture & Sports Center for five days on the theme of ‘Food, City & Health.’ This meeting is a life culture festival to find, carry out and exchange how important slow life is in a city and daily life and why it is needed. At this event, the role and meaning of slow life is drawing larger attention than ever before because it deals with the blueprint and inner values of life culture in the 4th industrial revolution era.

‘Slow life’ aimed to make our life a little happier
Mayor Lee Seok-woo, “This event will diffuse the values of health, environment and sympathy.”

So far, Namyangju has done a lot to develop slow culture expanding its borders from the mecca of organic farming to slow food, the first slow city in the metropolitan area, slow reading, slow walking of hope together and slow-life education. The concept of slow today doesn’t simply mean a slow life. It also admits the idea of fast as needed in our life. So the concept of ‘slow’ is to make slow and fast coexist well and to find a way of making our life a little happier in it.
In a word, slow life is a tool for making life happy. In slow life, ‘slow’ doesn’t simply mean slow but comprises S (sustainable), L (local) and O (organic relationship that has symbiosis and circulation). As Namyangju is a city with an important connectivity to water as shown in the Bukhan River and Paldang dam, W contains the concept of water as well as whole food.
Mayor Lee Seok-woo clarified, “Slow life has three major values of health, environment and sympathy, which is based on the idea of Samnong advocated by pragmatist Dasan (Jeong Yak-yong). Dasan attached importance to eco-friendly and eco-nature relationship, saying that three gifts – heaven, earth and man – combine to make the art of farming. Through this event, we will propagate the values of profitable farming, convenient farming and middle-class farming to citizens and visitors.”

Will make best efforts to achieve a slow-life city
“With a target of 300,000 visitors in total for this event”

For the past decade, Namyangju has gradually approached such a slow-life city. The city is engaging in the ’10-minute happiness’ slogan with the aim of transacting administration, welfare culture, sports and education within 10 minutes by optimizing the city’s infrastructure. Slow life is a mechanism which couples hardware and software for proper function as an urban vein. Namyangju city is seeking after a ‘slow life city’ as model which combines the city’s external system and inner values of citizens’ life with both wings of Ten-minute happiness and Slow life.
‘Slow life as reality’ is the slogan for 2017 Slow life Festival. Especially, ‘the Slow life Five R’s’ emphasized by Namyangju city contain the most basic direction to be ready for our life. The Five R’s means five wisdoms in life – to reduce, reuse, recycle, return and renew. The opening performance of this event will be conducted as special performance of the slow fashion containing the direction of 5R lifestyle practice of slow life in costumes. High school and college students in the nation majoring in fashion design will show creative fashion work on 5R through public subscription while Lee Sang-bong, a world famous fashion designer will produce the image, music and dancing together to compose slow fashion 5R.
Mayor Lee said, “For last festival, it was viewing with a charge for the whole convention. However, with the whole makeup of contents, all conventions are going to be provided as a zone for free viewing except theme areas chiefly made for hands-on experience and play. This event aims at 300,000 visitors in total including 15,000 foreigners or 5%. Especially, we are preparing contents so that foreign visitors may be able to have many experiences in our conventions.”

Will show integrated gourmet tourism contents with a ‘Slow life gourmet sightseeing platform’
Rich contents in preparation for foreign visitors and children

The most remarkable content this year is ‘Slow-life gourmet sightseeing platform’ of the theme hall. This slow-life gourmet sightseeing experience hall was designed in the concept that all from production to sightseeing is hands-on experience and that visitors can see and embody integrated gourmet sightseeing contents of eating, liking, learning and feeling in advance.
Gourmet sightseeing platform means the network of joy and culture for connecting person to person, coexistence between ecology and local economy, and sharing the value of life and time-space margin. 5R experience market is a complex gourmet space for eating, buying, liking and learning and consists of eco-friendly organic farming, Halal food, fair trade food, processed rice food, etc.
For the cosmopolitans’ table-sharing section, wives of 25 countries’ ambassadors will demonstrate their country’s food culture in person through food show. Talk show of the global citizens’ table culture in connection of music and dancing to table will proceed together with the global village’s culture festival. Cook-and-do adventure and workshop will be conducted in which everyday experience and pleasure becomes the culture of slow life and you can see masters in our actual life such as sewing, ceramic ware, knitting and woodwork. Children’s experience hall is planning children’s economic life through family garden play based on food and sensibility play experience on the subject of preschool to lower-grade children while it is going to hold the general assembly of slow life network, a meeting of the global people who share and practice the values of slow life – health, environment and sympathy. The assembly of slow life network was planned as the meeting of the global people for their participation in the value and philosophy of slow life, for the life culture of sustainable production and consumption and for change of life pattern. Movements of Namyangju city which delivers the value of slow life in such diverse ways are catching attention as to its possible achievement through this international meeting.
