 [대한민국 민속신앙 ]  ‘이 시대 영매사를 찾아서’ (2)

사람들의 길흉화복을 점치고 기도해 주는‘천상선녀 나언암’. 경기도 광주에 신당을 차리고 신을 모시며 무녀(巫女)의 길에 들어선 건 14년 째. 나언암이 살아가는 배경은 신당의 신(神)할아버지로부터 출발한다. 그녀가 누구보다 이 길을 정직하게 걷는 것은 아이들을 비롯해 주변의 소중한 존재들이 있기 때문이다. 그녀는 간호사 출신의 이력을 갖고 있다. 여느 무속인과 다른 길을 걷고자 하는 그녀만의 이유를 만나서 들어봤다. <글 /홍기인 기자>
                                                        
간호사에서 신(神) 제자의 길로 들어서 느끼는 놀라움. 
한 사람 한 사람의 절실함을 보듬어 주고자 하는‘천상선녀 나언암(김나언)’. 그녀는 초등학교 때부터 미래를 잘 예견해 또래들 사이에서 예사롭지가 않았고, 일찍부터 무병(巫病)에 시달려야 했다. 성인이 되어 간호사로 수술실에서 근무를 했는데, 26세 때인 어느 날 잠들었다 눈을 떠보니 3일간 눈도 안 떠지는 증세가 나타났다고 한다. 게다가 수술실의 할머니가 돌아가실 것을 맞추는 등 이런 증세들이 계속되었다. 말하자면 강신무 입무 과정으로 몸과 마음에 지독한 고통이 엄습하는 신병(神病)이었던 셈이다.“꿈에‘시화’라고 쓰인 글씨가 보였고 제가 버스를 타고 어디를 가는 거예요. 그래서 꿈을 직접 확인하려고 경기도‘시화’를 찾아갔는데 깃발이 펄럭거리는 어떤 집이 있더군요. 그래서 그 곳에서 시험 삼아 날을 걸고 시를 걸어 굿을 했어요. 제가 산청거리를 하던 중에 벌떡 일어나서 신(神)엄마에게‘부채방울 사놓으셨죠?’했더니 사 놓았다고 하셔서 다시 굿을 했는데, 그게 일반 굿이 아닌 내림굿이 되어버린 것이죠”나언암은 평소 밝은 표정과 달리 몸이 그리 성치가 않다. 그녀는 골반을 이식해 무릎 수술을 하고, 발목 수술까지 큰 수술만 여섯 차례나 해 지금도 수술 후유증을 겪는 터다. 그런데도 굿 청에만 들어가면 자신의 몸이 아니란 걸 느끼며 신령님이 계시다는 걸 느낀다고 한다. 특히 굿을 할 때 작두에 올라 설 때면 마치 솜털을 밟는 듯 너무나 편안함을 몸으로 체험한다고도 했다. 나언암을 비교적 잘 아는 한 지인은“평소에 다리가 많이 불편해 힘도 없고 계단을 오르내릴 때 절뚝거리며 힘든데, 언젠가 제갓집 굿하는 걸 보게 됐어요. 그 때는 전에 봤던 선생님이 아니라 소름 돋을 정도로 할아버지 무서운 월력 같은 모습이랄까. 작두에 올라가는 게 정말 신기 할 정도였어요. 사뿐사뿐 가볍게 올라가서 거기서 장군님하고 소통이 되어 굿 마무리 하는 것을 제가 직접 느꼈어요. 사람들에게 있는 그대로 소통하면서 진실하게 대해 주니까 가식적이지 않고요. 그런 점 때문에 선생님을 또다시 찾는 것 같아요.”라고 말했다

아픔 마음 알고 다독이며, 한번 인연 맺으면 긴 시간 함께. 
나언암은 유명해지기보다 자신을 찾는 단 한 사람이라도 정성과 마음을 다하는 것을 신조로 삼는다고 했다. 그녀와 한번 인연을 맺은 이들이 오래도록 함께 하는 이유가 이 것이다. 그녀에겐 떠 올리면 그립고, 안타까운 사연이 하나 있다.“유방암 말기로 신명이 다 차 있던 분이 저를 찾은 적이 있어요. 그 분이 아무 말도 안하지만 마치‘나 좀 살려주세요’하듯 그런 눈빛을 자꾸 보내더군요. 그래서 신당에 마음이 온다면 세 번 걸음을 해보겠냐고 했어요. 그 분이 한 달에 한 번 찾았으니 100일 기도를 한 셈인데 끝날 무렵에 제 신당에서 부채방울을 가리키면서‘이게 너무 들어보고 싶은데 들어봐도 되나요?’하고 물었어요. 그래서 제가 허락하고 축원하는데‘제가축원’이 아닌‘신명축원’을 하는 거예요. 그래서 같이 산에 가서 허주는 내치고 올바른 신명(神明)을 받는 형식으로 옥수발원((玉水發願)을 할 수 있게 신당을 맺었지요. 그랬더니 너무 생기가 도는 거예요. 이후부터 치성으로 작은 일이든 큰 일이든 늘 데리고 갔어요. 그에겐 사람 구경하는 게 정말 큰 여행인 셈이었지요. 하루 종일 아무도 없는 곳에서 외롭게 3년 살았고 하늘나라에 갔어요.”하며 눈물을 보였다. 당시 나언암은 축원카드를 내리면서 그녀의 앞에서 소각하며‘사람은 누구나 죽어. 그런데 살려고 하지마. 살려고 할수록 네가 너무 아플 것 같다. 그리고 우리는 할아버지 제자이지 않니?”하며 많이 다독였다고 했다. 이렇게 그녀가 세상을 떠나고 6년이 흘러 진접굿(무녀가 자기 자신과 모신 신을 위해 벌이는 굿)도 하게 됐다. 나언암은 그 때마다 세상을 떠난 영혼이 늘 찾아왔다며 슬퍼했다. 나언암은 신과 신도들 앞에서 올바른 길만을 가고자 하는 것을 강조한다. 그녀가 누구보다 정직하게 이 길을 가고자 하는 또 하나의 이유는 지키고 싶은 소중한 존재들이 있기 때문이다. 그녀는 신(神)을 받은 지 얼마 안돼 결혼한 케이스다. 신혼시절 밤만 되면 신당(神堂)에 그렇게 가고 싶었다고 했다. 남편 몰래 나가다 들키기도 여러 차례. 그럼에도 신랑은 한 번도 어디가냐 묻지 않고 데려다 주며 이해 해줬다고 한다.“제가 그런 남편을 보며 이렇게 안과 밖을 자꾸 연결을 시키면 평범한 결혼 생활이 깨지겠다는 생각이 들더라구요. 그래서 신당에 있을 때는 할아버지 제자이자 무녀로 열심히 살지만 문 밖을 나가면 아내와 엄마로 나름의 규칙을 세웠어요. 그리고 할아버지들 즉, 신의 금전이라고 해야 하나요. 이것은 항상 보너스 같은 느낌으로 감사하게 여깁니다.”이렇듯 그녀는 신 제자로, 똑 소리 나는 엄마이자 아내로, 모든 것을 흐트러짐 없이 해내고자 하는 것이다. 
 
뮤지컬 배우로 또다른 꿈에 도전..“투명하고 깨끗하게 길을 걷고 싶다” 
나언암은 무속 외에도 새로운 꿈에 도전도 하고 있다. 예술적 재능도 많은 그녀는 2016년 초 <광주시민뮤지컬단>에 들어가 배우가 됐다. 작년 3월‘콩쥐팥쥐’와 올해 8월‘꽃나비’공연도 했다. 특히 위안부 할머니를 위로하는 취지로 기획된‘꽃나비’에서는 일본군 손에 죽은 소녀의 넋을 달래는 만신으로 고풀이 연기를 펼쳐내 많은 관객을 숙연케 하였다.“아픈 몸인데 불구하고 신을 받아서 신명전(神明殿)을 모시며 살라고 저를 점찍어서 화살을 확 당겨 주셨잖아요. 그런데 내가 하고 싶은 건 뭘까? 성격은 동적인 것을 하고 싶은데 몸이 아프다 보니 정적인 것을 항상 하는 거예요. 뮤지컬은 말 그대로 율동 있고 노래가 있잖아요. 그게 굿하고 비슷한 점이 많다는 걸 느꼈어요. 내가 10년 동안 넘게 해왔던 것이고, 한복 입는 것까지 자신감과 감흥이 왔어요. 만신 연기에 도움이 되더라구요”나언암은 누구보다 힘든 인생을 겪었기에 자신에게 찾아오는 이들이 말하지 않아도 아픔 마음을 잘 헤아리는 천상선녀다. 지금까지 해오 듯 순백의 깨끗함으로 걷고 싶은 게 소망이다. 그녀에게 있어 신 할아버지와 신령님은 안 되는 것 없는 든든한 빽과 같다. 하지만 무서운 것도 신령님들이다. 그것은 한 순간에 다 가져갈 수도 있을 것 같은 두려움을 갖기 때문이다.“더 바르게 가라고 저에게 아이 셋을 주지 않았나 싶어요. 바른 길을 가면 신령님은 내 치진 않을 것 같아요. 그러나 잘못하면 자손들을 칠 것 같은 느낌. 만약에 자손이 아프고 해침을 당하면 어떤 부모가 수긍할 수 있겠어요.”그래서 나언암은 신법에 어긋나지 않는 무녀의 길을 가길 더욱 원한다. 그녀는 깊은 뜻을 던지며 이렇게 말했다.“투명한 유리그릇으로 보면 저 뒤에 뭐가 있는지 다 보여요. 할아버지가 저를 통해 제갓집 분을 봤을 때 어떤 마음으로 가라고 하는 걸 바르게 이야기 하고, 또한 제갓집이 저를 통해서 할아버지를 보는 거잖아요. 여과지에 걸림이 없이 깨끗하게 가야 되지 않을까요?”

‘Chunsangsunnyeo Naunam’ embraces the heart broken from the physically painful

A marvelous path of a nurse turned shaman

‘Chunsangsunnyeo Naunam (Kim Na-un)’ embraces the desperateness of each person. She started to predict the future since she was a child but suffered from spiritual diseases. She worked as a nurse when grown up and experienced a phenomenon of 3 days blind after she woke up from a sleep one day at the age of 26. She also predicted an old woman on a surgery bed would die which turned out as predicted. In other words, all of these things were the processes of spiritual diseases. 

“I saw the letter ‘sihwa’ and I was going somewhere on a bus in a dream. I woke up and journeyed down to Gyeonggi Province in finding of ‘sihwa’. There was a house with flag written ‘sihwa’. I arranged a day and hung a poem and did a ritual there. I got up in the middle of ‘sanjungguri’ and asked a spiritual mother ‘You bought a fan bell, didn’t you?’ And she said yes. We then carried on the ritual and it turned out to be a would-be-medium ritual” looked back Naunam. 

Naunam always smiles but her body had to went through 6 times of knee and ankle surgery and she is still suffering from the side effect. Interestingly, she becomes OK and feels a spirit whenever in the ritual hall. When on the straw cutter, she says that she experiences like walking on downy cushion. 

“I felt uncomfortable on my legs and it was really hard to step up and down stairs. One day I saw a ritual at a jegot jip. It was not the teacher I saw but a scary grandfather. It was really amazing he walked on the straw cutter. I felt that he communicated with a general and finished off the ritual. Communicating with people as they are seemed truthful. Because of this, I think I revisit him again.” 

Sharing the pain and continuing the bond for a long time

Naunam is not interested in fame but in giving the best to each of her clients. For this reason, Naunam continues the bond with her clients as long as it can last. 

“A person who was dying of breast cancer visited one day in seeking a chance of surviving. I asked her to visit three times if she was interested in spirit. She paid a visit once in a month, equal to 100 days of prayer of which on the last day she pointed ‘bujae bell’ and asked whether she could grab it. I allowed and gave blessing but it was not ‘jega blessing’ but ‘sinmyeong blessing’. We then climbed the mountain to do ‘oksubalwon’ to receive ‘sinmyeong’. She soon found vitality and we went there together all the time. It was a big journey for her to watch people. She lived in a lonely place where not a single man was around for 3 years and died in peace.” Naunam wrote a blessing card and burned it and said ‘We all die. So don’t wish to live forever as it gives more pain. After all, we are pupils of the grandfather, aren’t we?’ 6 years passed, Naunam started to do ‘jinjup ritual (a ritual for shaman herself and her spirit)’ in which deceased souls paid a visit to her. 

Naunam emphasizes on walking the right path in front of her spirit and believers because she has valuable existences to keep: she married soon after being possessed and wanted to make a journey to a ritual hall whenever night came. Her husband understood and escorted her. “I didn’t want to mix things up. So I set up a principle: being a pupil of the grandfather and a shaman when in the ritual hall and being a wife and a mother when at home. I feel the former is like a bonus.”

Challenging for musical actor…”I want walk a transparent and clean path”

Talented as she is, Naunam joined <Gwangju Civil Musical Company> in 2016 and took part in ‘Kongjwi and Patjwi’ – Korean Cinderella – performed March last year and ‘Flower Butterfly’ August this year. The latter is a story about comfort women and she starred as the shaman appeasing the souls of the deceased girls, the scene in which the audience went solemn. 

“My personality wanted to do something dynamic but my body confined me to something static. Then I came to realize that the songs and dance in musical in a way is similar to a ritual. I thought that I had done it for 10 years and was confident that I could also do musical. It actually helped shaman act.” 

Naunam experienced most painful life than anybody else and this made her understand the pains of others better. Like she did, Naunam wants to walk a transparent and clean path. The grandfather and spirit for her are trustworthy supporters. But at the same time, they can take everything away at once. 

“I think they gave me three children to better walk the good path. I don’t think they will take everything away from me as long as I keep that path. And I don’t want my children hurt or being ill as the result of it. I can see everything behind when seeing through transparent glass. The grandfather told me to walk right when he saw the man in jegot jip and the jegot jip sees that grandfather through me. So I must walk a transparent and clean path, mustn’t I?”
