그림을 통해 자신의 이야기를 하는 화가들은 예로부터 많은 방법으로 자신의 이야기를 전달하고자 노력해 왔다. 우리가 길가에서 흔하게 지나치는 풍경에서부터 형이상학적인 관념의 세계에 이르기까지 다양한 것이 모두 그림의 소재가 되어 왔다. 그 중에서도 현대 관객들에게 가장 익숙한 소재는 바로 우리 주변에서 흔하게 마주칠 수 있는 자연을 소재로 한 작품들이다. 서양화가 김희순 작가는 이러한 소재를 바탕으로 자신만의 독특한 세계를 널리 알리며 대중과 소통하고 있다.

질긴 생명력의 아름다움 품은 꽃으로 대중과 소통
김희순 작가는 어린 시절부터 화가의 꿈을 품고 줄곧 한 길만을 걸어왔다. 시골에서 자랐던 그녀는 학교 운동장이나 집 마당에서도 하루 종일 손으로 그림을 그리며 놀았고, 수업시간에도 그림을 그리면서 놀았다. 또 자신과 같은 아이들에게 그림을 가르쳐주는 미술선생님의 모습이 그렇게 멋있을 수 없었다고 한다. 그 때부터 화가의 꿈을 착실히 키워온 김 작가는 곧 디자인과에 진학하고 자신의 길을 서서히 찾아나가기 시작했다.
처음 그림의 길로 들어서면서 김 작가는 다양한 화풍을 발전시켜 나가기 시작했다. 아이들의 사진을 찍어 그것을 바탕으로 인물화를 그려 공모전에 제출하기도 하는 등 여러 가지 다양한 작품들을 지속적으로 그려나간 것이다. 그 결과 그녀가 현재 안착하게 된 것은 바로 자연이 주는 아름다움이었다. 실제로도 꽃을 좋아해 직접 키우기도 한다는 그녀는 꽃과 자연, 인공적인 구조물이 함께 어우러진 독특한 화풍 속에서 자신이 그토록 꿈꿔왔던 자유에 대한 열망을 깊이 드러내고 있다.
김 작가는 “저희 집안의 가풍이 다소 엄격한 편이었다. 그래서 실생활 속에서는 저 자신에게도 매우 엄격한 성격인 탓에, 그림을 그리면서부터는 작품 안에서라도 자유로움을 표현하고 싶었다. 그렇게 선택하게 된 꽃이라는 소재는 어디서나 피어나는 질긴 생명력과 가장 작은 아름다움을 동시에 품고 있는 생명체다. 또한 다양한 마티에르와 함께 종교적인 배경을 의미하는 전통문양과 연꽃의 어우러짐 등이 제가 표현하고자 했던 작품의 중심 주제다”라고 이야기했다.

“돌아오는 희망에 대한 애착 담았다”
끊임없는 연구와 작업으로 자신만의 작품 세계 개척
김 작가의 작품에서는 화려하고 아름다운 문양의 꽃과 함께 청회색의 벽이나 사물 등이 오브제로 함께 등장한다. 인공적인 것 또한 자연과 함께 조화로울 수 있다는 것이 김 작가의 작품세계에서 돋보이는 면이다. 그녀는 “오래된 벽에 자연적으로 균열이 가고 곰팡이가 피고 녹이 슬어있는 모습에서 큰 매력을 느낀다. 모든 만물이 시간이 지나면 늙고 병들고 추하게 변하는 시간의 흐름에서 자유로울 수 없다. 그러나 이러한 난관의 시기를 지나고 나면 다시 봄이 오듯이 제 작품에는 돌아오는 희망에 대한 애착을 담고 있다”라고 강조했다.
이처럼 김 작가는 자신의 작품을 통해 여러 관객들에게 ‘희망’의 메시지를 전달한다. 그녀의 작품 안에는 회색 빛 캔버스 안에서 창문 틈으로, 건물 사이로 빛이 들어오고 그 가운데 꽃이 고고히 피어 있다. 마치 우주의 섭리와도 같은 자연의 피어남을 고스란히 품고 있는 것은 돌아올 계절에 대한 희망과 기대라 할 수 있다. 특히 삶의 희망을 잃어가는 현대인들에게 김 작가의 작품이 전하는 메시지는, 희망은 우리 삶 곳곳에서 빛을 발하고 있다는 것이다. 그러한 요소들을 포착하기 위해 그녀는 지금까지 그림을 그려오고 있는 것이다.
김 작가는 지금까지도 ‘김희순 작가의 작품’이라는 이야기가 저절로 나올 수 있는 그림을 그리기 위해 노력한다고 이야기한다. 각종 단체 활동을 통해 중견작가의 반열에 다다른 그녀이지만, 지금까지도 김 작가는 매일 새로운 것을 생각해야 하는 창의적인 작업, 끊임없는 연구를 통해 소재를 발견하는 과정의 참 매력을 느끼고 있다고 한다. 이러한 창작에 대한 열정이 지금의 그녀를 만들었다 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.

한국미술협회 서양화분과위원 등으로 활발히 활동
지역 문화센터 등에서 그림 강좌 진행해
김 작가는 2016 인사동아트페어에서 올해의 작가상을 수상하는 한편, 올 한 해 카카오안데오로시 국제현대아트페어, 한중문화예술전, 비엔나, 발리, 스위스, 터키, 중국 등 해외 아트페어에도 20여회 이상 참여하며 자신의 작품을 세계에 선보이고 있는 작가다. 또한 한국미술협회 서양화분과위원, 서울미술협회 행사분과운영이사 등으로 단체의 발전을 위한 노력 역시 아끼지 않고 있다.
또한 김 작가는 지역 내 문화센터 등 다양한 곳에서 수강생들과 만나 그림 그리기의 매력을 널리 알리고 있다. 자신의 작품을 구상하고 그리기에도 시간이 부족할 지경이지만 그림의 꿈을 품고 있는 여러 사람들과 만나는 일은 늘 즐거울 수밖에 없다. 김 작가는 “강사가 수강생들의 그림을 자기 좋을 대로 간섭하는 것은 좋지 않다고 생각한다. 누구나 좋아하는 색이 다르고 좋아하는 구도가 다르다. 그렇기 때문에 저는 강의를 통해 수강생 스스로의 창의력과 생각을 발전시키는 데에 집중하고 있으며, 그렇게 수업을 진행한 결과 만족도도 높아 스스로도 뿌듯한 마음이 든다”라고 언급했다.
김 작가는 앞으로도 항상 진취적이고 긍정적인 마인드로 자신의 작품 세계를 더욱 견고히 만들어갈 것이라는 소감을 전했다. 항상 지금보다 더 나은 작품을 만들기 위해, 새로운 작품에 도전하기 위해 자신을 조금씩 가꾸어 가는 그녀의 행보가 더욱 밝은 빛을 발할 수 있기를 기대한다.

Kim uses the flower’s surviving power to communicate with people

Artist Kim Hee-soon dreamed of becoming an artist since she was a child and has walked a single path without looking back. She grew up in rural area and the playground of school or the front garden of her house was a paper for her to draw a picture with fingers. In the art class, she was charmed by her art teacher’s image of teaching students how to draw. But she majored in design at university. 

When she turned to her course to art, she tried to develop her style in various forms. She took photos of children to draw their portraits and submitted her works to various art competitions. Having tried many genres, she came to realize that she suited best for depicting the beauty of nature. 

She loves flowers and she actually grows them. She finds her unique brushwork in an atmosphere where artificial structures exist in harmony with flowers and nature in which she expose her yearning for freedom. 

“I grew up in a strict family tradition. Naturally, I became strict to myself. But I wanted to express my yearning for freedom at least in my works. So I chose flowers as the object of my works. They have strong surviving power and the smallest beauty in nature at the same time. I then added religious background and traditional patterns such as lotus flowers to express the main subject of my works” says Kim.

We can find splendid and beautiful patterned flowers and a gunmetal wall or objects in her works. This is because Kim intends to show that artificial objects also can be beautiful in harmony with nature. 

“I feel fascinated by watching an old wall in cracks, molds and rust. Because everything in this world withers, suffers and dies as time goes by. Nobody can avoid this cycle. But spring comes when harsh winter passes so I put my attachment in returning hope in my works.” 

Kim delivers ‘hope’ to people through her works. For this reason in her works, there is a light squeezing in through windows and between the buildings and a flower bloomed lonely and humble in dreaming of hope returning again next spring. 

Kim delivers her message to people, who are losing a hope of life, that hope is shining in every nook and corner of our life and this is the reason she has carried on her artistic world. 

Although Kim is already an established artist in the art circle, she continues her effort in building her creative art world through endless research and hard work. It is not much to say that this of her passion actually has made her who she is today.

Teaching art for local residents

Kim won the artist of the year prize at the 2016 Insadong Art Fair. She has participated in more than 20 art fairs home and abroad this year alone including the Kakaoanderoosi International Modern Art Fair, Korea-China Culture & Art Fair and other fairs held in Vienna, Bali, Swiss, Turkey and China. She also is serving as a member of the Korean Fine Arts Association Western Painting Division and administrative steering committee member of the Korean Fine Arts Association Seoul. 

Meanwhile, Kim is teaching art for local residents. Being an artist itself requires a considerable amount of time but she willingly makes time to share the charm of creating art works with people. 

“I don’t think it effective that a teacher butts in in all details because everybody has difference in preference. So I rather focus on developing the preference of each student to maximize their creative thought and expressions. And I’m actually receiving a great response from my students.”

When asked about future plan, she said that she would build her art world firmer and sounder through challenging and positive attitude and creative mind.
