[Art] Seogak artist Sukhyang Park Chan-dong
The Prajna-Paramita-Sutra artist makes ‘seogak’ easy and fun
Park engages in recovery of cultural assets and signboards

“A seogak where you can hang on a wall you wish, a seogak that is easy and fun and a seogak I can laugh with or someone can bow in empathy, is what I wish my seogak looks like. Today, like every other day, I become a totem pole, open the door of my studio and wait for someone to visit.” - Artist’s note –

Prajna-Paramita-Sutra in a temple captivates the heart of Park

Park showed his great talent in calligraphy since he was a child. His hand writing on Korean paper was put on the wall of his class when he was a 5th year elementary student. He also wrote the letters of the prizes given to students by the principal when he was a 2nd year middle school student. Having seen his skills ever growing, he decided to be a calligrapher when he became a high school student.

He studied artistic crafts in high school and he never put down his brush once it is in his hand. His technique became near perfect as time went by and his tenacity and obsession made him stronger than he thought day by day.

“After discharged from the army, I started ‘dancheong’ – Korean decorative color patterns – with my friend in a temple. I stayed there for a month and came to know about Prajna-Paramita-Sutra. There was a big resonance in my heart and I wrote it 100 times of which I have still kept the 100th paper today as a souvenir. Looking back, that was the very moment which made who I am today” says Park.

About 10 years ago, his son introduced him his future wife and Park was hit by a thought: he wanted to write a book of the Thousand-Character Classic Texts for his future grandson. He made the book in a month and the people who saw it were surprised by the neat and immaculate execution of all 1,000 words. Praises were pouring down on him and encouraged by this, Park started his career as a seogak artist in earnest.

Park boasts 90 works of Prajna-Paramita-Sutra
Actively engaging in recovery of cultural assets and signboards

Under the instruction of Eungok Sohn Young-hak, a master seogak artist of intangible cultural asset, Park learned necessary technique for traditional seogak. Though a professional calligrapher, making a progress was not easy. Yet the difficulty could not surpass his passion and tenacity and he mastered various carving methods and techniques. He then expanded the scope of his technique to recovery of cultural assets and signboards.

“I carved more than 20 letters a day but they didn’t seem to be completed. I thought how they might look like to others while I’m not satisfied with my works. So I decided not to participate or hold any exhibitions until I reach to a certain level. It was when I carved 1,000 letters in a year that I participate in a seogak exhibition for the first time.”

Park probably is best known as ‘the Prajna-Paramita-Sutra artist’. He takes his love and attachment to the sutra as his destiny. From the very start of seogak, he focused on the sutra’s 270 letters and most of his works that won a prize or two were all about the sutra.
To push forward his zeal, he is planning to hold a Prajna-Paramita-Sutra exhibition when he finishes 108 works of the sutra (90 works completed at the moment). The sutra tells Park about ‘emptying’ worldly desires. Like this teaching resonated with his heart, Park wishes to deliver it to the people at the exhibition.

“Seogak should be easy and fun for normal people”
Park leads Chamssem Gakga Research Society

In 2010, Park paid a visit to Mukgyeong Kim Gwang-sung, who is serving as the president of the Korea Modern Seogak Association to deepen his knowledge and technique in modern seogak and is currently receiving advice from Hyunchun Muk Young-dal who widened Park’s eyes on modern seogak. Park’s years of knowledge and technique tells him that ‘simplicity’ is the key for seogak. One’s unique style is important but over-done styles or techniques can make the public turn their back from seogak, according to Park.

“Seogak should be easy and fun for normal people. Seogak artists are not necessary focusing on works that can only be displayed in exhibitions but on works people can easily engage in everyday life. This way, we can make seogak more popular than now.”

Meanwhile, Park is serving as the president of the Chamssem Gakga Research Society and actively engages himself in activities of various modern seogak clubs. He also finished the seogak instructor’s course of the Korea Seogak Association and currently is serving as the vice president and a steering committee member of the association.

When asked about his future plan, Park said that he was planning to hold an exhibition with his son and grandson who both majored in art. Park added that he feels really good and rewarded whenever he meets people who do seogak and he hopes that more people will enjoy the charm of seogak in exhibitions and in everyday life.
