문화재청장을 역임한 유홍준을 비롯한 많은 미술사학자들은, 한국의 초상화에는 한국화의 은유적 성향과 달리 서양화처럼 사실주의적 성향이 담겨있다고 전한다. 평범한 일상적 민화와 대조되는 위인들의 초상은 이처럼 동서고금을 막론하고 극사실적인 관찰력을 바탕으로 묘사되었으며, 서양인물화에서 얼굴형상에 해부학적 분석을 도입한 다 빈치 이래 초상화가는 예술적 아름다움이라는 수단으로 후손들에게 명사의 자아를 발굴하여 전하는 역할을 해 왔다. 이제, 지난 40여 년 간 수많은 국내외 저명인사들을 화폭에 담으며 한국을 대표하는 초상화전문화가인 국내 최초의 초상화전문갤러리 관장, 오동희 작가의 작품철학을 들여다보자.

복원과 재현을 통해 초상화로 시공 초월하는 화합이라는 감성적 메시지 전달

초상화를 그리는 일은 역사에 기록된 인물의 자아를 발굴하는 과정이기도 하다. 시대를 풍미하고 유명세를 떨친 인물의 발자취를 재현하는 초상화는 예술품이라는 아름다운 본성을 지키면서 해당 인물이 이 시대에 남긴 정신적, 문화적 유산을 재탄생시키는 중요한 작업이다. 초상화전문화가 오동희 작가는 국내외 유력 정치 지도자들의 초상화와, 종교·경제·사회·문화적으로 큰 족적을 남긴 저명인사들을 마치 어진 복구를 방불케 할 만큼 정교한 화폭에 남겼으며, 서양화의 철저한 데생으로 미술의 기본기를 다진 실력파로 알려져 있다. 오 작가는 지난 서울대교구의 승인을 받아 2012년 김수환 추기경의 초상화를 그려 ‘바보의 나눔’ 재단에 기증하고, 양업교회사 연구소장 차기진 박사와 함께 과거 문헌을 철저히 고증해 천주교 어농성지에 전시될 순교자 8인의 초상화를 성공적으로 완성한 바 있다. 실존인물을 오브제로 택해 삶의 가치와 종교, 정치논리를 초월한 화합의 메시지를 담는 초상화에 매력을 느끼고 입문한 이래 40여 년 간 초상화를 주로 그려 온 오 작가는 해부학적 인간의 외피와 근육, 골격에 대한 많은 연구를 바탕으로 밑그림을 그린다. 또한 각도에 따른 빛과 그늘, 표정에 따른 얼굴 주름에도 인물의 성향을 정밀하게 담아낸다. 또한 한 장을 그리는 데도 1년 이상의 고증과 1개월 이상의 작업시간이 소요되는 어려운 작업임에도, 오 작가는 꾸준히 문헌과 복식, 기존 초상과 사진을 새로운 표정과 포즈로 복원하는 과정을 빼놓지 않는 사실주의적, 신고전주의적 작업 태도를 유지하고 있다. 이러한 과정으로 탄생하는 초상화들은 역사적 인물의 삶과 업적, 앞으로의 영향력과 화합의 메시지들을 담고 있음은 물론이다. 

국내 최초 초상화전문갤러리 오픈과 해외 갤러리 진출로 열정적 활동 

프란치스코 교황, 엘리자베스 영국여왕, 마더 테레사, 최규하 대통령, 넬슨 만델라, 천태종 구인사의 역대 큰스님들, 역대 육군 참모총장들을 비롯해 유명 기업가들과 문화 인사들을 화폭에 담은 오 작가는 살아 있는 인물 대상의 인터뷰와 많은 사진촬영을 거쳐 확률적으로 접근하는 초상화작가들 속에서, 학술적인 자료연구로 인물의 일대기에 접근해 표현하는 몇 안 되는 학자 형 초상화가다. 홍대 미술대학원에서 수학했으며 아카데믹적인 미술기법을 토대로 쌓은 철저한 기본기와 고증을 거쳐 ‘품격 있는 단 한 장의 자서전’을 완성한다는 오 작가는, 지난 2016년 4월 자신의 역대 작품들을 아카이브 식으로 전시하고 후학들에게 초상화 강의 기법을 전수하기 위해 서초구 반포동의 30평 규모 4층 건물에 국내 최초의 초상화전문갤러리를 오픈했다. 현재도 4층의 작업실에서 초상화 작업을 계속하고 있는 오 작가는 그 옛날 귀족들과 예술가들이 차 한 잔을 나누며 소통하던 살롱아트를 오동희초상화갤러리에서 재현할 수 있기를 바란다고 밝혔다. 격조 높은 초상화가 미적 아름다움 뿐 아니라 후손들에게 가치를 건하는 수단이 되어야 함을 후학들에게 강의하며 창작에 몰두하는 오 작가는, 지난 해 10월 파리의 ‘까루젤 뒤 루브르 살롱 아트페어 아트쇼핑’에 참가해 전 세계 미술 애호가들 앞에서 대표작을 소개하는 시간을 가졌다. 사실적 표현과 색, 명암, 미화보다 성향 중심으로 자연스럽게 감상자들에게 다가서는 오 작가의 작품들은, 귀족들의 자태와 생활상을 다룬 고전 초상화와 달리 근현대사의 인물이 갖는 역사적 의의를 재해석했다는 독특한 가치로 호평을 받기도 했다. 

대상에 대한 경의와 애정 담은 감성적 사실주의 초상화 1인자로 역사에 기억되길

오 작가는 지성과 감성을 조화시킨 초상화를 예로 들 때 반드시 언급되어야 할 인물이기도 하다. 사진처럼 정확하고 사실적인 표현과 불혹에 이르러 표정만으로도 드러나는 생의 족적을 담아야 하는 초상화가로서, 오 작가는 먼저 인물의 구도와 비례에 맞춰 전체 색조를 정한 뒤, 마스크 안에 표정과 성품, 인상을 세밀하게 담는 과정을 거친다고 한다. 이러한 특징으로 오 작가는 종파를 초월한 종교인 전문, 국가를 초월한 정치인 전문 초상화가로도 불린다. 오 작가는 여기에 머물지 않고, 언론매체로 전해진 사회의 비극과 큰 사건들의 현장을 담는 데도 초상화의 역할이 중요함을 역설했다. 어린이의 크고 슬픈 눈빛 속에 아이티의 참혹함을 재현한 <아이티의 눈물>에서는 중년 연령대의 품격 있는 인물화에 강하다는 기존의 인식을 깨뜨리는 오 작가의 감성적 표현력을 느낄 수 있다. 오 작가는 취미 이상의 열정을 갖고 연필 스케치를 하던 유년기부터, 국내 최고 수준의 초상화가라는 명성 속에서 자신의 기본기와 철학을 후학들과 갤러리들에게 널리 전하고자 하는 현재에 이르기까지, 초상화라는 한정된 구조 안에서 수많은 인물들의 삶을 접하고 무한히 재생한다는 즐거움 덕분에 붓을 놓겠다는 유혹이나 매너리즘으로 고통 받은 적이 없다고 한다. 
한편, 초기에 전통초상화를 거쳐 주로 캔버스 유화작업의 수많은 덧칠 기법으로 체력 소모가 많은 편이지만, 오 작가는 여전히 초상화 예술가라는 단 하나의 이름으로 기억되길 바란다고 한다. 또한 작품의 조형적 아름다움에 그 인물이 지닌 삶의 향기까지 담아내는 작업의 가치를 알기에 앞으로도 심혈을 기울여 초상화를 완성해 갈 것이라고 밝혔다. 독일의 빈터할터와 루벤스, 네덜란드의 렘브란트는 모두 자신이 그린 작품의 인물들의 유명세와 함께 미술사에 이름을 남긴 초상화가들이다. 오스트리아 황후 씨씨의 삶에서 그 아름다운 자태를 기록으로 남긴 빈터할터를 반드시 연상하듯, <플란다스의 개>에서 주인공이 사랑한 루벤스의 인물화 이야기를 반드시 다루듯, 언젠가 후대의 사람들은 오 작가가 완성한 국내외의 명사 초상화를 다룰 때마다 오 작가의 한결같은 예술가의 삶 또한 기억하게 될 것이다.

The portrait of recovery and reproduce delivers emotional message of harmony over time and space

Painting a portrait in a way is a process of finding the ego of the historical person. It is an important job in terms of keeping the beautiful nature of an art work and recovering the spiritual and cultural assets of the person. 

Known as a portrait artist, Oh realized many renowned persons in the fields of religion, economy, society and culture in her works with utmost delicacy. She is received as one of the masters of thorough details in terms of western painting. 

In 2012, Oh painted a portrait of Stephen Kim Sou-hwan and donated the work to the Babonanum, a charity organization, and successfully completed 8 portraits of Catholic martyrs that will be displayed in Onong Sacred Place after a thorough historical research with Dr. Cha Ki-gin. 

Oh’s artistic world has surpassed religion and politics but delivers a message of harmony for the last 40 years and her study in human muscles and skeleton plays the foundation of her portrait. It normally took more than a year for Oh to make sure historical research and a month to complete a work. Yet she pays utmost attention to realize the best realisms possible with an edge of neoclassicism. 

Naturally, Oh’s works contain the life of the historic person, his/her influence and the message of harmony. 

Opening the Korea’s first portrait gallery and pioneering galleries overseas

Some of the portraits Oh has painted are Pope Francis, Queen Elizabeth, Mother Theresa, the former President Choi Kyu-ha, Nelson Mandela, chief monks of Guinsa Temple of the Tiantai Order and renowned entrepreneurs and cultural figures. 

She studied at Graduate School of Hongik University and is determined to create ‘only one elegant portrait’. She opened the Korea’s first portrait gallery in a 90 square meter fourth floor of a building in Banpo-dong, Seocho District, Seoul in April 2016 to foster talented young portrait painters. Oh wishes that her gallery will be a place of the salon art where noble people and artists shared a tea in the olden time. Oh delivers her message to her students that a portrait must deliver not only the beauty of the portrait but also the value of it. October last year, she participated in Carrousel Du Louvre and had a time to introduce her representative works to art lovers of the world. Her works were praised for unique value of reinterpreting historical meaning of persons in modern history. 

To be remembered as the master of emotional realism portrait artist who pours respect and intimacy in the works

Oh is one of the portrait artists who should be included when talking about portraits of sense and sensitivity. Oh puts composition, balance and colors first before going through depicting facial expression, personality and impression in detail. 

Also, Oh says that it is important to portrait artists to reflect disastrous accident in our society onto canvas. For example, Oh delivered horrendous situation in Haiti through a child’s big and sad eye in her work <Tears of Haiti>. 

Oh has met many people despite the limited genre of portrait but it made her more excited to reproduce their lives through images. Naturally, she never thought of putting down her brush or of being suffered from mannerism. 

Portrait painting in fact requires a considerable amount of time and effort but Oh willingly has taken them to have the honor of being remembered as a portrait artist. 

Winterhalter, Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt are the names that set up a milestone in the history of portrait painting. Likewise, one day in the future, people will remember the works of the portrait artist Oh Dong-hee.
