통영바다닷컴은 경상남도 통영시에 있는 건어물 도·소매점이다. 통영의 특산품인 멸치를 비롯해 미역, 다시마, 김, 오징어, 황태, 건꼴뚜기 등 건어물 종류는 전부 다 취급한다. 또 통영바다에서 나오는 생굴, 장어, 멍게 등 생물도 특산물로 판매하고 있으며 멸치젓, 갈치젓 등 10종류가 넘는 젓갈도 판매하고 있다. 다양한 건어물을 판매하고 있는 통영바다닷컴은 그중에서도 멸치의 판매율이 가장 높다. 이는 통영에서 유일하게 멸치 여성 중매인으로 활동하고 있는 이 대표의 남다른 안목 때문이다. 아무리 좋은 물건을 받는다고 해도 직접 눈으로 보고 경매를 받아와 파는 것과는 차원이 다르다. “통영바다닷컴은 수산물·건어물 유통 전문 업체로 인터넷 쇼핑몰을 구축함으로써 통영바다에서 갓 잡아 올린 우수한 품질의 수산물과 건어물을 가정에서 손쉽게 구매할 수 있도록 도와드리고 있습니다. 항상 최고의 서비스와 정직으로 고객에게 100% 만족을 줄 수 있는 건어물 유통 업체로 거듭날 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠습니다. 뿐만 아니라 통영 근해에서 잡히는 멸치는 대한민국에서 으뜸으로 손꼽히고 있습니다. 이는 통영의 바다가 미국 FDA에서도 인정한 청정해역이기 때문에 맛과 품질이 좋을 수  밖에 없습니다”라며 통영멸치의 맛과 품질의 우수성을 널리 홍보하고 있으며 특히 통영바다의 수온, 염도 등의 조건이 타 연안과 다른 점이 통영멸치의 맛을 따라오지 못하는 이유라고 그는 전했다.

충청도가 고향인 이 대표는 통영이 고향인 남편을 만나 통영으로 오게 되었다고 한다. 처음에는 통영 멸치 및 수산물을 고향으로 판매하기 위해 시작했지만 납품을 하면서 물건 값을 제대로 못 받는 등 여러 가지 문제로 인해 지금은 도매는 하지 않고 대신 온라인으로 상품을 판매하고 있다. 1994년 ‘비진도 상회’라는 상호로 처음 건어물 가게를 시작한 그는 이후 2000년 초, 지금의 자리인 유람선터미널로 이전을 한 후 고향인 충청도를 상호로 사용해 ‘충청건어물’로 상호를 변경하게 되었다. “유람선터미널에 오는 관광객들 중 충청도 관광객들이 많습니다. 그 분들 덕분에 지금의 자리까지 오게 되었는지도 모릅니다. 하지만 충청건어물에 오는 고향인들 뿐만 아니라 모든 고객을 항상 가족같이 생각하며 조금의 불편함도 없기 위해 최선을 다하고 있습니다. 또한 멸치뿐 아니라 품질 좋은 제품만을 공급받아 생산자, 제조사, 산지 1차 유통을 거래하는 유통과정을 최소화해 신선하고 믿을 수 있는 먹을거리만을 공급해 소비자에게 큰 혜택을 주고 있습니다. 또한 건어물은 100% 국내산 제품으로 내 가족이 먹을 수 있는 제품만을 판매하기 때문에 통영바다닷컴의 모든 제품은 안전한 먹거리로 소비자에게 제공하고 있습니다.”
현재 통영바다닷컴 매출의 80%는 현장에서 판매하는 오프라인이고, 나머지 20%는 온라인 판매로 이루어지고 있다. 이 대표의 경영 철학이자 가훈은 바로 ‘정직’이다 보니 한번 그와 인연을 맺은 고객은 10년 또는 20년이 지난 지금까지도 그를 통해 물건을 구매하고 있다고 한다.   

“장사는 돈을 버는 것이 아니고 돈을 만드는 것이라고 생각해요. 때문에 상인이 노력하지 않으면 결코 소비자들의 요구를 만족해줄 수가 없습니다.” 처음 물건을 산 고객이 재구매를 할 때가 가장 행복하다는 이미숙 대표. “항상 소비자의 입맛에 맞는 품질 좋고 맛있는 물건을 팔고자 노력하고 있습니다. 장사 뿐 아니라 정직은 우리가 살아가는 데 아주 중요합니다”라고 강조하는 그의 바람처럼 전국의 많은 관광객들이 품질 좋은 제품을 믿고 살 수 있는 통영바다닷컴/충청건어물이 될 수 있기를 기대해본다.

Tongyeong Bada Dot Com is a dried fisheries wholesale and retail store in Tongyeong City. The store sells local specialties and all kinds of dried marine products such as anchovy, seaweed, squid, pollack and baby octopus as well as more than 10 kinds of salted fishes and raw oyster, eel and sea squirt. Among the products, anchovy undoubtedly is the most famous. And Lee is the sole woman anchovy dealer in the city. 

No matter how good the product is, there is difference in seeing it with bare eyes at the site in terms of making sure of the quality and this is exactly what Lee is doing. 

“From just caught marine products to dried ones, I sell 100% authentic marine products. Tongyeong anchovy is especially famous for its top quality because they live in the water off Tongyeong and the sea around the region was recognized as uncontaminated by the FDA (US). Therefore, the taste can only be good” says Lee. In fact, the temperature and the amount of salt of the sea are just right for anchovy to live. 

Lee was born in Choungcheong Province but went down to Tongyeong following her husband who was born and raised in the city. She started a dried fisheries store under the name ‘Bijindo Store’ in 1994 and moved the store to the current cruise ship terminal in early 2000 with the current name. 

“Among many tourists landing the terminal, I see many of them from Chungcheong Province. So I take some advantage of myself coming from the same province for my business but I basically greet all customers with welcome and kindness. I also simplified the distribution process to provide quality products at good prices. It is worth pointing out that all products are 100% caught in the water off Tongyeong and so the safety is guaranteed.”

80% of the sales are generated from offline selling and the rest 20% from online. Lee’s management philosophy, and also family motto, is ‘honesty’. It might be for this reason that many of regulars of Lee have worked in partnership for more than 10 to 20 years. 

“I think running a business is about making money but not earning money. In other words, a merchant cannot satisfy the demand of customers without hard work. I feel really rewarded when the first timers become my regulars because I always work hard to sell the best products available and they recognized my effort. So I would like to emphasize that ‘honest’ is the most important element especially when doing a business.”
