봉사와 화합은 사회를 아름답게 꾸며가기 위해서 필수적이며 자발적인 요소이지만 실제로 봉사를 실천하고 손길을 내미는 것은 많은 노력과 시간이 드는 어려운 일이다. 양극화가 심해지고 빈부격차가 커지는 현실에서 봉사는 특정 계층만이 아닌 모두의 덕목이 되고 있다. 이에 단 한 번의 일회성 봉사가 아닌 십 수년째 꾸준히 지역의 어려운 이들을 위해 묵묵히 봉사활동을 해오고 있는 단체가 있어 주목을 받고 있다. 나보다는 우리, 우리보다는 통영의 발전을 위해 순수한 봉사활동을 전개해 오고 있는 통영청실회의 박재우 회장. 지역발전에 앞장서며 소외된 이웃을 마음으로 끌어안고 있는 그는 회원들과의 친목을 도모하며 진정한 리더십으로 보다 많은 사람들이 자신보다 어려운 사람들을 위해 선뜻 봉사의 뜻을 같이해줄 때 보람을 느낀다고 말한다. 함께하는 공동체 사회를 지향하며 더불어 사는 사회건설에 적극적인 활동을 펼치고 있는 박재우 회장을 만나 혼돈의 시대, 도덕성의 가치를 다시금 되짚어 보는 시간을 가졌다.

일회성 봉사가 아닌 꾸준한 봉사활동으로 지역봉사에 이바지할 터
“우리 통영청실회는 ‘젊음의 지성, 사회봉사로!’라는 슬로건 아래 ‘회원을 형제처럼’이라는 단결구호로 지난 반세기 동안 지역사회 봉사활동의 최선봉에 자리하며 수많은 업적들을 실천해 왔습니다. 그리고 저 역시 제49대 회장직을 수행하며 다짐한 것이 있습니다. ‘통영청실회를 위해 열정적이고 패기 있는 한 해를 살아보자.’ 저는 통영청실회가 그럴만한 가치가 있다고 누구보다 믿고 있습니다. 청실회 원로이신 저희 부모님께서 저에게 그런 열정과 패기를 주셨고 사랑하는 우리 통영청실회 회원들이 함께하는 이상 저의 봉사에 대한 열정은 식지 않을 것입니다. 앞으로 남은 임기 기간 동안 ‘happy together(함께하면 행복해요)’라는 슬로건 아래 통영청실회가 하나 되어 통영 지역 내 사회봉사, 나눔실천으로 넘쳐나는 남은 한 해가 될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠습니다.”
‘젊음의 지성 사회봉사로’라는 슬로건 아래 충·효사상과 자주, 자립, 협동의 정신을 실천하고 있는 토속적인 순수한 봉사단체로서 전국의 청·홍실 회원들이 단결하여 지역사회에 어렵고 소외된 이웃과 지역의 어르신들을 위해 온 열정을 다해 봉사하고 있는 청실회는 지난 1966년 4월 9일 진주에서 창립 이후 전국 시·군으로 활동이 확산되었으며 홍익인간의 이념을 바탕으로 창립된 순수 봉사 단체로 푸를 청(靑)자에 후일 열매를 맺었으면 하는 바람에서 열매 실(實)자를 붙여 청실회란 명칭으로 활동하고 있는 순수 봉사단체다. 그 중 47년이라는 긴 역사를 자랑하고 있는 통영청실회는 소외계층 주거환경 개선 봉사활동, 다문화 가족 한마당 잔치, 농어촌 봉사활동 등 다양한 봉사활동을 전개하고 있다. 그중에서도 지난 4월, 전국의 20개 지구 2,000여명의 청실회 회원이 통영에 모여 ‘청실회 전국회원대회’를 유치하기도 했으며 특히 작년에 처음으로 개최한 장벽이 없는 장애인과 비장애인의 축제인 '제1회 베리어프리 축제’를 성황리에 마치고 올해 ‘제2회 베리어프리 축제’를 준비 중이다.  
회원들 모두 개인 생활로 인해 봉사활동에 다소 애로사항이 있지만 그래도 지금까지 한 번도 거르지 않고 주기적으로 지역 내 어려운 이웃을 위해 봉사활동을 해 오고 있는 통영청실회. 박 회장은 “봉사는 뜻이 순수한 사람들이 참여하는 것도 맞지만 많은 사람이 참여해야 문화로까지 확산될 수 있다”고 전했다. 그러면서 그는 “봉사형태는 ‘재능을 나누는 것’이다. 누구나 어떤 형태로든지 다른 사람보다 나은 재능을 한 가지씩은 가지고 태어났다”며 “돈이 있는 사람은 돈으로, 의사는 병 고치는 기술로, 건강한 사람은 노동으로 이웃에게 봉사를 실천할 수 있다. 그 재능을 적재적소에 잘 활용하며 무엇보다도 하고자 하는 마음과 용기가 중요하다”고 강조했다.  
청실회는 다른 봉사단체와는 달리 운영 구조가 독특하다. 남편이 청실회 회원이면 아내는 자연적으로 홍실회 회원이 된다. 때문에 부부가 함께 봉사활동을 하는 구조다. 그래서 회원 자격은 봉사 정신이 투철한 기혼자로 제한한다. 또한 직업군은 공무원, 법조인, 자영업자 등 다양하다. 이들 회원이 자발적으로 내는 회비로 본부와 각 지구가 운영되고 있으며 본인이 회비를 내고 시간을 할애해서 몸으로 봉사를 하는 것이다. “회원들과 하루 종일 땀을 뻘뻘 흘려가며 봉사활동을 한 뒤 다 같이 모여서 먹는 소주 한 잔의 그 맛은 먹어보지 않은 사람은 모를 겁니다. 몸은 힘들지만 마음은 무엇보다 최고로 기쁩니다. 사람 인(人)만 봐도 그렇잖아요. 사람은 혼자서 살 수 없습니다. 더불어 살아가고 있다는 것을 깨닫고 다른 사람에게 도움이 되는 일을 할 때 정신적으로 풍족해질 수 있습니다.” 그는 자신의 훈훈한 마음을 결코 ‘봉사’라는 단어와 결부시키지 않고 우리 사회에서 마땅히 해야 할 일이라고 생각하며 살아가고 있었다. 지금과 같이 각박한 세상살이로 ‘내 것’만을 챙기기 급급한 가운데 오히려 내가 가진 한 조각의 빵조차 어려운 이웃들에게 조금씩 나누어 주는 미덕의 주인공. 그와 함께 밝은 등불이 되고자 두 팔을 걷어 올린 통영청실회. 

“인생이란 자기하기 나름입니다. 무엇에 가치를 두고 만족을 느끼느냐에 따라 우리들의 삶은 행복할 수도 불행할 수도 있지요. 저와 통영청실회 회원들은 열심히 할 수 있는 일을 하면서 그 속에서 행복을 느끼고 있습니다. 남은 임기동안 회원들과 단합하여 지역에 참 봉사를 이끌어 내는 단체가 되도록 할 것입니다.”  
인간이란 것이 돈을 많이 버는 것도 좋고, 자식에게 재산을 물려주는 것도 좋지만 봉사하는 정신을 물려주는 것도 좋은 일이라는 박재우 회장. 봉사란 마음으로 하는 것이니 많은 사람들이 봉사의 이념을 갖고 참여하기를 바란다는 그는 누구보다도 마음이 부자이다. 수신제가(修身齊家) 후 치국평천하(治國平天下)라 했던가? 봉사활동으로 수신을 하고, 가정을 화목하게 잘 이끌어가는 박 회장과 통영청실회. 그의 바람대로 통영청실회가 앞으로 더욱 이웃들을 위해 열심히 봉사하며 따뜻한 온정을 베풀며 살아가는 살맛나는 세상을 만들 수 있기를 기대해 본다.

Will contribute to the community by performing constant volunteer work
Though service and harmony is essential and voluntary factors to make society beautiful, it is hard to put service into practice and lend one’s hand because it takes lots of efforts and time. Community service is becoming the virtue for all, not just for a specific class, in the reality of severer polarization and larger gap between the rich and poor. Accordingly, an organization which has been performing volunteer work silently for the needy in the community for over a dozen years is attracting attention. President Park Jae-woo of Tongyoung Chungsil Society, which has carried out pure volunteer work for the development of Tongyoung, is a leader in community development by taking care of alienated neighbors. He says that he feels reward when seeking for friendship with the members and finding more people who are ready to share the will toward community service with true leadership for the sake of those more needy than themselves. We met president Park Jae-woo who is carrying out positive activity to build a society of living and letting live to hear about the value of morality in this time of chaos.          
 

Will contribute to the community with continued volunteer work 
“Under the slogan of ‘Young intellects toward social service,’ and with the motto of ‘Members like brothers’ Tongyoung Chungsil Society has made numerous achievements at the forefront of community volunteer work for the past century. I have also promised myself ‘to live one year with passion and ambition for Tongyoung Chungsil Society.’  I believe more than any others that Tongyoung Chungsil Society is worth the effort. Sine my parents who are seniors of Chungsil gave me such passion and ambition and our society members stand together, my zeal for community service will not cool off. For the remaining term of the year, I will do my level best so that Tongyoung Chungsil Society will be united under the slogan of ‘Happy together’ and be filled with social service and practice of sharing in the area of Tongyoung.” 
Under the slogan of “Young intellects toward social service,’ Chungsil Society is a native, pure volunteer work organization, which is practicing the idea of loyalty and filial piety and the spirit of independence, self-reliance and cooperation, and Chung-Hongsil members around the country stand together to give service enthusiastically for neighbors who are needy, alienated and seniors in the community. Since it was founded n Jinjoo on April 9, 1966, this pure community service organization has expanded its activity to cities and Gun’s around the country acting in the name of Chungsil Society meaning bearing fruit in the future, based on the ideology of devotion to the welfare of mankind. Of them, Tongyoung Chungsil Society boasting of 47 years’ history is carrying out diverse kinds of volunteer work for the alienated, improving living environment, multicultural families and farming and fishing villages. Among others, last April, Chungsil Society’s 2000 members from 20 regions in the nation gathered together in Tongyoung for ‘Chungsil Society Nationwide Rally,’ while last year, they ended ‘the 1st barrier-free festival’ for both handicapped and non-handicapped successfully and are preparing for the 2nd Barrier-free Festival’ this year.   
All of the members have some difficulty due to personal life but Tongyoung Chungsil Society has so far performed volunteer work for needy neighbors periodically without skipping once. President Park emphasized, “Volunteer work takes participation of people in pure will but only participation of many people can spread to culture. Form of volunteer work is sharing talents. Anyone was born with one talent better than others in any form. One with money, a medical doctor and a heathy person can carry out volunteer work with money, technique of curing disease and labor, respectively. The talents should be well used in the right place, and above all, what matters most is the heart and courage to participate.”                                 
Chungsil Society has a unique structure of operation, unlike other community service organizations. If a husband is a member of Chungsil Society, his wife naturally becomes member of Hongsil Society. So it is the structure of a couple carrying out volunteer work together. That’s why the membership is limited to the married with a strong volunteer spirit. Job type is varied among public official, judicial officer,  self-employed, etc. Members fees paid voluntarily by these members are operating the head office and each branch and the person himself pays the fee and engages in community service in person by finding time. “You will never know how sweet the taste of a glass of Soju is in a sitting altogether after sweating all the day for volunteer work. Though being tired in the body, we feel extremely glad in the heart. The Chinese character meaning ‘a person’ tells the truth. Man cannot live alone. Realizing we are getting along together, we can be rich in mind when doing something to serve another.” He was leading a life considering his warm heart never connected to ‘community service’ but a thing for him to do naturally in the society. They are heroes of virtue in parting with even a piece of bread they have to needy neighbors bit by bit in the heartless circumstances of struggle for ‘my own thing.’ Tongyoung Society is an organization rolling up their sleeves to become a bright lamp together with him. 
“Life is one’s own making. Our life can be happy or unhappy depending on our values, that is, what we are satisfied with. I and Tongyoung Chungsil members are feeling happy with doing assiduously what we can. For the remaining term, I will make an organization which draws a true community service by standing together with members.”
According to president Park Jae-woo, handing down a spirit of service is a good thing, not just making much money or making over property to children.  Hoping that many people participate with the idea of community service because it is done with the heart, he seems to be richer in mind than any others. Men of old said that manage yourself and your family before helping to stabilize the world. President Park and Tongyoung Chungsil Society are leading the family well in harmony by managing themselves with volunteer work. As he wishes, it is hoped that Tongyoung Chungsil Society will perform community service more diligently for neighbors and make a nicer world in which we can get along giving a warm heart.
