Inner world variety on the shadows of leaves
‘Phenomenology of Body’ is a theory that a man cognizes and experiences the world by using its body organs and objectifies the world to draw subjective judgments. The phenomenological French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty is the one who raised our body as a cognitive and objectifiable material. He said that our experience is the barometer to draw independent judgments through human relationship and organic interaction. 

The method of an artist Kim Eun-jin is not much different from Ponty’s. She has used images drawn from the four seasonal human-tree relations since 2005 and shifted her findings onto canvas. Kim studied relations of lights and shadows formed by trees and of reinterpretation of the shadows and her personal memories. 

A tree in a forest implies ‘me’ among the public. It is a separate being yet within a group thus bound by a close correlation. From this year, Kim has been shifting her focus from forms of trees to vitality and volumes of them in order to express different inner side of man. And she introduced ‘Shadow’ series that takes the trees as the artist herself and the lights as environmental elements. 

Kim applied watercolor, bunchae, sukchae and gold and silver leaves in order to make the shadow of the inner world conspicuous. Recently, she is using spray method to give a change and reinterpretation and expressing the shadows in colors to depict the inner world and meanings. 

Memories fade as time goes by but they remain as forms and images which Kim uses as the motive to create shadows of trees. Like Ponty explained in his book ‘Phenomenology of Perception’, the captivated scenes by eyes are cognized through filtering that objectifies the world. And Kim explained that human cognition is the source for cognition on organism. 

Objects create different shadows. The shadow of a building outside has another or more shadows inside created by artificial lights and a man can see oneself reflected in the mirror through light. Kim’s study on time and space also led her to find different elements drawn from the zone defined as one’s own area. 

Kim says that she tries to see the inner world of people over appearance as a way to find motive for her works and she carefully plans to expand the scope of the shadow to ‘shadow within shadow’ from next year.
