“Poultry farming is a future food industry"
Hankook Yanggyeo (Korea Poultry Farm) CEO Kim Young-hwan

Kim leads the Korean poultry industry through a continuous R&D
Kim did various jobs from an animal drug salesman to working for a animal fodder company, chicken farm and hatchery before establishing Hankook Yanggye Co., Ltd. During these career paths, he once took a part in improvement of local breed Minina and Maniker and realized importance of poultry industry.
"Korean poultry farmers are really proud of themselves. Layer chickens have an explosive reproductive rate (more than yearly 100 times) and they are one of the main sources of supplying protein. They don't eat much fodder but have a high spawning rate which is good considering the fact that Korea imports 100% feed cereals from overseas. Also, raising chicken is eco-friendly as they don't pee and the Composter can be processed without any unpleasant smell by using a fowl dropping fermentor" says Kim.
Hankook Yanggye Co., Ltd. signed an agency contract with an American Hy-Line breeding company in 1987 and complemented its technology. As a result, Hankook Yanggye secured excellent breeds and raising skills and soon supplied breeding chicks to countries in South East Asia.
"I started to publish a monthly 'Korean Poultry research' in 1990 and have introduced world's poultry farming skills to Korean farmers. I'm also taking out  subscriptions to seven poultry farming magazines of the world to analyze the trend in speed."
In 1991, Hankook Yanggye formed a partnership with Salmet Cage (Germany) and introduced automated poultry farming facilities including a Salmet Cage facilities business division and human influenza vaccine/vaccine egg farms. All family member of Kim majored in either poultry farming or veterinarian and Hankook Yanggyeo has grown into a leading poultry farming company in Korea.

"Eggs are No.1 future food"
Kim asserts that eggs are No.1 future food because the consumption rate is rapidly growing: one Korean person consumed 185 eggs in 2001, 238 in 2010 and 268 in 2015. But chicken farmers are encountering opposition from residents of rural areas and as a result the supply cannot meet the demand. Therefore, local governments' support for eco-friendly automated systems is urgently needed.
"A 15,000 won ($13) 600g beef equals 30 eggs. It means that wiser housewives put eggs on the table for her family. Eggs contain immunity globulin, amino acid (good for developing brain cells of babies), high protein but low calorie (good for slim body) and lutein and zeaxanthin (preventing macular degeneration). The number of egg consumption is increasing not only in Korea but in Japan, Mexico and the US."

Measures for preventing AI from spreading
"It is important to disperse the chicken farmers nationwide to effectively prevent AI from spreading. Because just one outbreak can contaminate the whole area if the farms are condensed in one area."
Kim also points out the importance of regular check up: the farmers need to observe their behavior on a daily basis and immediately report to the authorities if there seems to be any abnormal behavior.
In addition, chickens should be caged between October and March in which the migratory birds from the North arrive the Korean soil and all distribution systems must be transparent.
"Some elderly people privately raise chicken at their backyards but this should also be limited to a certain period because AI also can start from them."
With accumulated knowhow and experience, Kim is ambitiously preparing to pioneer overseas market.
