Game Company that grows the internal stability with a VR game such as ‘Free Runner’, ‘Still Alive’

“The future of Korea’s VR is going to be put with a matter of decision of connection for popularity of game equipment and right supports by the country”

CEO Park, Chan-Yeol of TALKIE STUDIO

Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning is planning to invest about 40 billion won on the VR (Virtual Reality) sector until 2017. As for TALKIE STUDIO Corporate is filled with many VR specialists and ready for launching ‘Still Alive’ game. They are dreaming of a global company in the future. In this month, we met CEO Park, Chan-Yeol of TALKIE STUDIO and listened to his voice that he would like to talk about a Korean game prospective and Korea’s regulations issues and importance of changing, which was a time to be assured for them.

VR Game Company chosen out of 2016 Contents Competition and First Penguin’, going with Free Runner and Still Alive at the same time
TALKIE STUDIO is a 3D/VR game company located in Gwangju and was built up in June 2015. They just started developing prototype of Free Runner, which is a 3D run-game in 2014 firstly and completed it. It was a small in scale but they are making the top profit only with 15-20 employees. Also, they are facing the opening of expecting works such as Runner and Still Alive titles, which are provided at VR and mobile versions according to various platforms service rules, for example, steam, experience hall, play station out of one world view.
CEO Park, Chan-Yeol of TALKIE STUDIO once almost was broken because there was too much competition among all the game companies in Seoul. It was a crazy environment competing with them. Many times were crisis, however a chance came into him. A publisher from a game show before gave him some information, so he could apply for the supporting program of Giant VR production promotion in his hometown, Gwangjoo. Since then, his business has gone well. Because of that, CEO Park made the level of the game ‘Free Runner’ better in quality and after all, it gained a big acclaim at international game show. Their production was recognized and got the grand prix in Korea Contents Competition hosted by Korea Contents Promotion Center in December 2016. Besides, they were chosen by First Penguin of the trust guarantee fund. At the end, they hosed the possibility as for the experience game taking a part in the mobile game demonstration and G-Star show in China as well.
On the other hand, KOTRA supported the company so TALKIE STUDIO got a great investment from foreign investors as they joined PGC and MGF like British B2C game exhibition. Other than that, they keep updated by going to other game shows like USA GCA. It is mostly about making a network widely. Regarding ‘Free Runner’, it is a finished work with a proto-type for the first time.
Also, they did a good attention from the public as there was a VR room at Yongsan CGV in the past, which made them to prepare for a mobile version after opening in the VR and let it go to the game market as a plan. In case of Still Alive, it is taking a remarkable interest as they got half a billion supporting money in the middle of 2017. This content consists of a storytelling about survival relief rather than catharsis from killing intention and a zombie action like securing with water and food in a format during the extreme situation.

Have more experiences from international game shows in order to come over the gap of domestic and global VR games
CEO Park said the motto of company is ‘Pirate who is finding treasure over the ocean’. This has a thread of connection between users who are picking up their favorites not ordering games and game creators do the same. He emphasized on that game developers have to go overseas to see more creative things at game shows and exhibitions for their impression and they would check with people’s feedback under the experiencing style knowing the difference between national and international aspects. He suggests two things to flourish the VR game for now.
First of all, the VR equipment costs about 1.3 million won of a money range, which is expensive to a small company, surely. So, to make things easy, there should be ‘Killer Contents’ being capable of getting tools for the purpose of doing the game just like that game application is so general at the moment since everybody has own cell phone. After all, if there is no proper tool for the game, it is nothing. Besides, it is getting old and out of date as times flows.
Furthermore, it has to be let Korean young gamers who are playing the endless game without break know a king of excitement of ending like ‘Diablo’ with paying repeatedly by Patch and DLC payment system. CEO Park mentioned game company has to develop casual game without burdens for about 10 minutes with SAMSUNG gear/DAYDREAM VR, which is a distributed model that costs about 100 thousands won. To prevent monopolistic and oligopoly, he suggested that increasing high specifications VR introduction would be good.

Need a slowdown toward working on supported by the government when developing a game company completely
CEO Park, Chan-Yeol of TALKIE STUDIO made two tracks such as short time experience version and long time stream game version according to international feedback of Still Alive. And, He is preparing for going to a GAME SHOW in Koln, Germany in August. CEO Park said he is thinking of win-win M&A of network among the startup game companies with his experiences of based with revitalization of TALKIE. The reason is small companies with tiny of supporting money from the local government between independent game companies and large game companies that promoting on TV are facing many difficulties in the attraction of investment, management, game R&D. Mostly they need to go though issues with their capability. And, in between game companies cannot have the initial investment money, operator’s stay in the middle of them.
Therefore, CEO Park, Chan-Yeol of TALKIE STUDIO insisted on that if is better to change such a difficult national investment to be win into a huge scale of national investment. The negative effect dominated for a long time. It happened in a deal between game company owners, developers and the government not by associations. He is waiting for game geniuses with doing a mentor of VR experts at a learning center in Gwangjoo. CEO Park believes that the alternatives in Korea’s game industry are good contents, swift management know-how only. His goal is to grow the company with 5 to 100 billion on sale and make the popularity in Europe much higher in around 2019. And, his another challenge is that he would like to do the business of tour, education like total VR contents when he is ready to do that one day.
