Wishing an easy passage into eternity
Chief Monk Hyunsung of Yongin Bulkwangsa Temple (Yang-ji Natural Burials)

Bulkwangsa Temple on propitious site blooms with seasonal commemorations

Yang-ji Natural Burials is a 30 minute drive from Seoul and a 10 minute from Yangji IC. It is surrounded by dense pine tree forests and is managed by the 600 year old Bulkwangsa Temple built by Monk Muhak in the late Goryeo Kingdom period. It was burnt down during the Japanese invasions of Korea in 1592–1598 but rebuilt by Monk Hyunsung in the Buddhist year 2555. Hyunsung enshrined Budda’s ‘chinshin sa-ri’ in the Jeokmyeolbogoong Sa-ri Pagoda. It boasts one of the largest Daeungjeon Hall (main building) and Jijangjeon Hall and Hyunsung enshrined portraits of the deceased former president Park Chung-hee and the first lady on the request of his daughter Park Geun-ryeong in 2012. The temple represents as prayer temple and youngsa temple in the southern part of Gyeonggi Province.

“We pray every day for an easy passage into eternity of those deceased souls and wish a fulfillment of those hungry and troubled. Everybody can come with his/her worries to talk with us as we are always trying hard to be around the people so that they can find a piece of comfort” says Hyungsung.

There is not stopping of sutra chanting and a continuous flow of visitors in Bulkwangsa Temple. Some come to visit with a wish to see enshrinement of their beloved ones who passed to a different world or to seek a comfort for their own troubled life. Yang-ji Natural Burials was created to provide comfort to this continuous flow of visitors. One might consider whether it is a beautiful forest and a park or a burial site. Bo trees, under which Buddha was enlightened, hydrangea, maple trees, Korean firs (abies), yews, junipers and bansong trees are all found at Yang-ji Natural Burials.

“It is a burial site but it is more like a park where visitors can rest in nature after paying respect to their beloved ones.”

“Let us look back the path we trod and find a way to peace”

Yang-ji Natural Burials is in a propitious site. The topography tells that a phoenix pecks at and eats and a golden hen embraces an egg, thus called ‘golden-hen-embracing-egg-type’ propitious site. The site is interpreted to bring prosperity to off springs and to gather wealth and fame.

Many topography experts voice together that the site of this type is the best and only a few are found nationwide. Good examples are the house of Lee Kun-hee (Samsung chairman) and of the grave of the father of Shin Kyuk-ho (Lotte chairman). A good burial site means putting practice of filial piety and Yang-ji Natural Burials, in this respect, is the best burial site that an off spring can show his/her respect to ancestors. You do not need to worry about parking space as it is big enough and CCTV and a fire prevention system also are installed in case of any disagreeable incidents. In addition, maintenance workers are constantly on work and you can make an inquire over the phone before visiting.

“Visiting the burial site often is as important as enshrining your ancestors in a good burial site. So make a worthwhile journey every now and then and have a good resting time at Yang-ji Natural Burials” says Hyunsung and he adds “Many people are suffering from desire and greed nowadays. And it is helpful to note that our mind is the way, the truth and the life. Let us look back the path we trod and find a way to peace.”
