무더위가 한창 기승을 부리는 8월 초순, 서울 인사동‘리수갤러리’에서 교사작가 류성림 화가의 여섯 번째 개인전이 열렸다. 이번 전시의 주제는“꽃에 물들다”로 시원하게 펼쳐진 꽃 풍경으로 가득 채워졌다. 모두가 작가 자신이 내면에 담은 예술적 감성을 색다르게 풀어내고자 한 열정으로 빚어낸 작품들이다. 방학임에도 불구하고 전시를 보름여 앞두고 학교에 나와 땀 흘리는 류 작가를 만나 작품에 대해 이런저런 얘기를 나눠 보았다. <편집자 주>

..내면의 진솔한 마음을 담아낸 작품세계.
사람들은 누구나 자신의 이면에 실타래 같은 사연을 안고 살아간다. 그것을 어떤 작업을 통해 풀어 헤치는 작가들에겐 더 없는 소재가 될 것이며, 그로 인해 쏟는 노력은 이루 말할 수 없다. 서양화가 류성림 작가도 마찬가지다. 그녀에겐 풍경화와 정물화 등 여러 작품이 있지만, 꽃 그림 작업이 많다. 여느 화가들이 실제의 꽃이나 자연의 실경에 깊은 관심을 갖는 것과 달리 류 작가가 보여주는 꽃은 약간의 추상적 표현주의 화풍으로 도드라진다. 그녀의 작업에서 발견되는 또 다른 것을 본다면 사의(寫意)에서 비롯된 대상으로 표출해 낸다는 것이다. 즉 눈으로 본 그대로의 꽃이 아니라 꽃들은 다른 눈으로 생각하고 보는 정겨움의 꽃이다. 그녀의 꽃 그림은 그저 소박하고 다정스럽게 두런두런 이야기하는 듯하다. 여기에 다양한 꽃의 종류를 생략과 단순화 시켜 일정한 두께로 입혀진 마티에르 화풍은 구성 면에서도 특별한 느낌을 준다. 정물화의 대상으로만 여겨지던 꽃의 형상을 확대하여 화폭에 덮어버리는 유연성에서 자연에 대한 탐구와 심오한 상징이 숨겨져 있는 듯하다. <기억>, <왜 사느냐고>, <도시이야기> 등 풍경화 외에 <선물>(2009년)은 그리스 로마 신화의 책을 읽고 환상적인 바다 속과 꽃 수술을 소재로 상상 속의 꽃을 표현 했으며, <무제25>(2016년)는 담벼락에 모습을 드러낸 밝은 표정의 장미를 이야기 하듯 묘사했다. 또한 최근작인 <여름이야기>(2017년) 등은 단조롭지만 단일하고 강렬한 색채에 자유로운 분위기와 분방한 터치로 단순한 꽃의 묘사 단계를 벗어나 감정이입 된 특질성을 보여준다. 이 외에 작품으로 <꽃잔치> 등은 마치 놀이와 즐김을 통한 치유적 사고로 덧칠해져 보는 이들의 마음을 따뜻하게 보듬어 주고 있다. 20세기에 끝까지 인간애의 정신을 관철시킨 표현주의 작가‘루오’처럼 자유롭고 힘찬 선, 때로는 얇고도 굵은 점들은 내면의 울림처럼 다가온다. 이런 꽃 그림의 패턴은 각자가 다르나 공통적으로 풍부한 감정들을 되살리고 예술적 미감을 유감없이 드러냄으로써 우리의 공감대를 이끌어 내고 있다. 이에 대해 류 작가는“난 꽃을 예쁘고 화려한 색채로 매끈하게 표현하지 않는다. 오히려 질퍽하고 두툼한 마티에르를 통하여 그림을 보는 이들의 마음속에 꽃물이 스며들 수 있도록 다양한 효과를 시도하고 있다”고 설명했다. 

표현주의 기법으로 자신만의 색다른 감성 보여줘.
내면의 세계를 표현한 미술 표현주의는 1910년을 전후하여 프랑스와 독일에서 등장한 미술 운동으로 이들은 자신들이 느끼는 감정에 충실한 주제를 당당히 그렸다. 표현주의 작가들 의 작품에는 몇 가지 특징이 있다. 첫째, 인상주의가 눈에 보이는 세계만을 그렸다면 표현주의는 눈에 보이지 않는 불안, 공포, 기쁨, 슬픔 등 미술가의 감정이 강하게 드러나도록 그렸다는 것. 둘째, 슬플 때는 주변이 모두 우울해 보이는 것처럼 사물은 마음의 상태에 따라서 다르게 보여져 표현주의 작가들은 형태를 다르게 해서 색채도 실제보다 더 강하게 표현 하였다는 점이다. 여기서 한발 더 나아가 추상 표현주의 작가들은 전통적인 표현 수단을 중요하게 생각하지 않고, 캔버스에 물감을 스며들게 해 아름다운 색채가 감상자에게 강하게 느껴지게 표현하기도 했다. 물감 자체의 묵직함을 화면에 그대로 표현하여 보는 사람들의 감정에 그대로 호소하는 그림을 그렸던 작가들도 있었다. 이와 맞물려 류성림 작가는 그 나름의 시각적 효과를 얻으면서 때로는 클로즈업해 눈에 띄는 화풍을 시도하고 있다. 특히 화면에 넓게 펼쳐놓은 꽃 그림을 중심으로 집약적으로 빚어낸 물감의 질감은 그 표현력에 많은 노력을 쏟아 부은 흔적들이 역력하다. 여기에 가끔은 원근법적으로 극복하려는 강한 의지도 보이는 등 이런 저런 기법과 실험 등을 통해 스토리를 엮어 가고 있다. 이는 역설적으로 보는 이들을 부담스럽지 않고 편안하며 아름다운 느낌을 갖게 해준다. 혹자는 작품을 보면서 화가가 아름다운 자연, 꽃에 대한 예찬 등을 강조해 표출되었으면 하는 주문을 하지만 류 작가는 나름의 표현 방식과 이미지를 그대로 보아주고 그 속에 담긴 스토리를 읽으며 그저 편안 해 지길 원한다. 그것은 순수한 마음으로 보려는 투명한 작가 자신의 진솔함이 내재되어 있기 때문이다. 류 작가에 있어 그림은 더함도 덜함도 아닌 어쩌면‘마음 치유’의 그림인 것이다. 그녀의 표현대로‘주어진 붓끝은 삶을 지탱 해주는 어둠을 씻겨주는 밝음’과 같다. 그래서 주요 소재로 삼는 꽃들로 캔버스마다에 가득히 넘쳐 난다. 언제나 맑은 마음을 갖기 위해 영혼의 빛을 찾아 나서 듯, 그런 꽃들이 더욱 화사하게 가슴 속에서 부터 피어나길 다 같이 기대하듯 말이다.

미술을 지도하며 때로는 학생들 눈높이에 맞춘 상담자로.
아름다운 꽃을 보면서 마음 어루만지고 치유의 그림으로. 
류 작가에게 있어서 유년 시절의 화실은 선망의 공간이었다. 그녀는 그림이 너무 그리고 싶어 화실에 갔고, 나이가 많은 언니와 오빠들 틈에서 혼자 수채화 그림을 그리곤 했었다. 어린 시절부터 유난히 그림이 좋았던 류 작가는 성장하며 사범대학교에 갔고, 졸업 후 미술교사로 발령을 받았다. 그리고 지금은 오랜 기간 고교에서 아이들을 가르치며 자신의 작업도 해내고 있다. 평소에 미술교실은 아이들과 함께 즐기는 일종의 놀이 공간과도 같다. 그녀의 미술 수업은 부족한 부분을 채우는 전인교육의 일환이기도 하지만 수업 외적으로는 아이들에겐 인성 교육을 시켜주는 더 없는 상담 장이기도 하다. 시대의 변화에 따라 갈수록 미흡해지는 아이들의 인성을 채워주는 교육자로서 보완적 역할을 다 해가는 것도 그녀의 몫이다. 이와 함께 청년기에 경험하고 지금의 경험을 녹여내는 그림들은 올바른 인성을 일깨우는 하나의 매개체며, 그녀 자신도 마음을 다지는 분수령이 되고 있는 것이다. 학생들은 물론 사람들은 그녀의 아름다운 꽃들을 보면서 마음을 어루만지고 치유하는 느낌을 갖는다. 류 작가는“그림 작업을 할 때는 당당하지만 막상 전시할 때 마음은 부끄럽고 부족한 생각이 많이 든다”고 겸손함을 내비치며“살아오면서 보였던 작은 욕심들을 지금은 버리고, 지우고, 단순화 된 삶을 살고 싶다. 더불어서 관객과 소통하는 좋은 작품들을 꾸준히 해가고 싶은 게 바람이다”고 밝혔다. 
한편, 류성림 작가는 2009년 대한민국 정수미술대전 공모전에 <기억> 을 출품, 우수상을 수상한 것을 계기로 구미미술작가전에 초대 받기 시작했다. 경상남도 및 경상북도 미술대전에서 특선과 입선도 여러 차례 수상했다. 2012년 경북 칠곡에서 1회 개인전을 필두로 2013년 서울(리서울 갤러리)과 대구(사라보갤러리), 2014년 구미(더 에스프레소), 2016년 청주(청원미술관), 올해 8월 서울(리수랠러리)까지 여섯 번의 개인전을 열었다. 단체전은 경북중등미술교육협회전을 비롯해 대구아트페어, 경남국제아트페어, 제42회 한국미술협회전(예술의전당), 한.불수교 120주년 기념 국제현대미술제 등 다수의 전시에 참여했다. 전국기능경기대회 그래픽디자인직종 심사위원, 서울지방기능경기대회 그래픽디자인직종 심사장, 심사위원 등을 역임했으며 작품들은 진주시청, 지수중학교, 인동고등학교, 군위고등학교, 구미전자공고 등에 소장되어 있다. 현재는 경북과학기술고등학교에서 후학 양성에 매진하면서 한국미협 구미미협회원, 한유회, 구미여류작가회 회원 및 정수미술대전초대작가로 활발한 활동을 펼쳐가고 있다.

Flower paintings that heal your broken heart

Strong colors of flowers fill up the canvas
Ryoo pours hear true inner world in her works

Everybody has a story to tell. And artists are those who disentangle the skein of the story in literature, in music and in painting and they pour their heart and effort to make one completed work. The same applies to artist Ryoo Sung-lim. She draws landscape and still life but her favorite object is flower with a hint of abstract. 

Ryoo shift what she thinks of flower, but not what she sees of it, onto canvas. One might imagine that flowers are whispering each other in her works. She leaves out part of object and simplifies and applies the paint thickly in order to give a special feel. She enlarges the form of flower to cover the canvas and one might feel her study on nature and symbols hidden in the work.

<Memory> and <Why We Live> are two good examples of her landscape works and <Gift> - 2009 – is enlivened with imaginary flowers of fantastic under sea in Greek and Roman mythologies. <No Title 25> - 2016 – delivers a story of cheerful roses on the wall, <Summer Story> - 2017 – presents simple but strong colors in free touches of brush with a hint of her empathy and you might also feel a sense of healing and warmness through her work <Flower Feast>.

Like Georges Rouault, a French painter who held fast to his view on humanity, Ryoo’s free yet strong lines and a mix of thin and thick dots come to us like a resonance of inner world. Each flower work has different pattern but it draws the same empathy from us through her abundant emotions and artistic sense of beauty. 

“I don’t use pretty or splendid colors for flowers. I use muddy and thick paint so that the sap of flowers permeates the hearts of viewers” says Ryoo.

Creating unique colors by expressionist techniques

Expressionism appeared in France and Germany around 1910. Expressionists expressed their inner world and honest to what they feel. Expressionists had some common characteristics: 1) they expressed anxiety, fear, joy and sadness as opposed to impressionists who draw the world as it was 2) objects looked different depending artist’s state of mind and also forms were different and colors thicker than real to give intensity 3) they did not think traditional expressive method important and made the colors infiltrated onto canvas so that the beautiful colors can be transmitted to viewers. Some expressionists used the paint layer on layer to make it thick to appeal his emotions to viewers. 

In the same respect, Ryoo tries conspicuous brush works through unique visual effect and close up. For example, she spread flowers here and there on the canvas and intensifies the paint in the heart of them to create strong expression. She also uses various methods and experiments, perspective for example, to overcome the things. Paradoxically, this makes viewers comfortable and feeling beautiful. 

Some viewers demand stronger expression of nature and flowers but Ryoo kindly asks them to feel her intention of comfort as shown in her expressive methods and images. This is because she pours her truthfulness in her works. In a way, painting for her is ‘mind healing’ “The tip of brush is the light that hold life, that washes away the darkness” says Ryoo. Like she always walks out of the door in finding of clear mind and soul, the flowers on the canvas is expected to bloom cheerfully from the heart.

As an art teacher and a consultant
Creating works of beautiful flowers that can heal one’s broken heart

Atelier was a space of her dream when she was a child. She went there to draw watercolors among her senior students. She carried on her passion at a college of education and worked as an art teacher at a school after graduation. Currently, she is working as a high school art teacher while keep carrying out her own works. 

She takes her art education as an extension of personality education. The art class is a playground and a place of consulting at the same time. She says that drawing pictures regardless ages can function as a tool to train one’s personality and the same applies to her as an art teacher. It might be for this reason that her students, like many people, find a sense of healing and embracement by appreciating her beautiful flowers works. 

“I feel confident when drawing but become shy when having an exhibition. I want to lead a simple life by throwing away what I desired. And I want to communicate this simplicity with viewers.”

Ryoo received a runner up prize with her work <Memory> at The 2009 Korea Jungsu Art Competition and held a number of invitational exhibitions thereafter. Some of her works were selected for Gyeongsangnamdo Art Exhibition and Gyeongsangbukdo Art Exhibition and received a number of prizes including a special prize. 

She has held six solo exhibitions: Chilgok County in 2012, Lee Seoul Gallery in 2013, Sarabo Gallery in Daegu in 2013, The Expresso in Gumi in 2014, Cheongwon Gallery in Cheongju in 2016 and Leesoo Gallery in Seoul in August 2017.

She also participated in a number of group exhibitions including Daegu Art Fair, Gyeongnam International Art Fair, 42nd Korea Fine Arts Association Exhibition at Seoul Arts Center and Commemorative International Art Exhibition of Korea-France 120th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations. 

She served as a judge of World Skills Korea in the graphic category and the head judge of Seoul Skills in the same category. Her works are kept in Jinju City, Jisu Middle School, Indong High School, Gunwi High School and Gumi Electronic Technical High School. 

Currently, she is working as an art teacher at Gyeongbuk Science Technology High School and active as a member of Korea Fine Arts Association Gumi, Hanyoheo, Gumi Women Artists Association, and an invitational artist of Jungsu Art Competition.
