[Art] Artist Choi Jong-yun of Choihyeon Seogak Center
Walking a single path as a seogak artist and winning the presidential prize

Seogak has been a life companion of Choi
Choi was born in Yeongcheon City. He showed a great interest in Chinese characters and started calligraphy when he was a third year elementary school student. He learned the skill under the instruction of his art teacher Lee Ju-gang in the middle school and Lee, who once served as the president of the Korea Seogak Association, eventually became his lifetime teacher.

Choi gradually ungraded his technique under Lee’s professional instruction in the evening as he had to work during the day. It was not an easy path to take but he mastered necessary skills one by one with patience and tenacity.

“Apart from seogak (wood letter carving) technique, I also had to study about Chinese poems and classics. Some seogak artist focused on carving itself but I wanted to achieve both writing and carving at the same time in order to deepen each of my work. Some ancient letters were really hard to discern their shapes from modern ones so I had to spend a lot of time to flip pages of Chinese letter dictionaries for reference. But I loved the job” says Choi.

Winning the presidential prize with ‘Nataeju‘s Flower Plants’
Choi started to make his presence in the seogak world through various competitions. He displayed his works at the Grand Exhibition of Korea and the Grand Calligraphy Exhibition of Korea. He wrote 100 papers of letters of which he chose only one paper of the letters for his work. It is his principle to make a one perfect one over several imperfect ones.

Choi said that winning the presidential prize at the 20TH Korea Unification Art Exhibition was most memorable events of his life. The exhibition is held by the Peace Cultural Foundation and sponsored by the Unification Cultural Festival Steering Committee. The works displayed at the exhibition covered various areas from seogak, craft, design, folk and Buddhist paintings to beauty, photography, ink, watercolor, calligraphy, Western and Korean paintings and POP.

“I wanted to create something meaningful and touching and I presented the letter forms and explained before I launched the carving. My work ‘Nataeju’s Flower Plants’ went through 3 times of screening and eventually won the presidential prize. ‘Flower plants’ means Korean people and I was really proud of my accomplishment.”

Teaching students at Deagu University and carrying on the creative zeal
Choi taught students at Korea Army Academy at Yeong-Cheon and Daekyeung University Lifelong Learning Center before and is carrying on her teaching career at Daegu University. Not many people walked a way of seogak artist nowadays as it take a considerable amount of time to master the skill but it will take a big part of the art world if more people do the art even if it is a hobby, according to Choi.

“I don’t teach students one directionally but it is more like a process of learning together because students are also my teachers and they are the source of my power to carry on my creative zeal.”

Some students are greedy to reaching a certain level in speed but Choi emphasizes steadiness.
“I always tell my students: one farmer works hard without a rest under the sun in the field and another also works hard but with a good amount of rest every now and then. And the latter cut the grass more than the former at the end of the day. Being greedy doesn’t bring efficiency but steadiness does.”

Serving as the head of the traditional art and craft division
Choi is running a livestock drugstore branch of Hanil Pharmaceutical in Wansan-dong. Although he does not seem to have much time to create seogak works but his office is full of seogak works. One might imagine the whole life of Choi by observing over 100 works lined up on the walls of the office.

“It wasn’t easy to work in the day and do seogak in the evening. But I really enjoyed creating something of my own and I sometimes spent over night at my office and went to home only to return back to the office after simple breakfast. It was impossible if I hadn’t had passion.”

“I put my works at the drugstore and I feel like the works upgraded my life from a chemist to an artist and the store looks more gracious with them.”

Currently, Choi is serving as the head of the traditional art and craft division of the Korea Fine Arts Association and he is determined to carry on his creative zeal in steadiness and perfection. When asked about his dream, he said he wished to list in name among the great seogak artists in Korea in the future.
