Introducing Korea’s first ‘emotion paly’ that makes children emotionally sound
Director Im Jin-jae of Feeling Pocket Institute / Yaya Kids

Development of the Korea’s first ‘emotion play program’

Children aged 3 to 6 grow fast. Although the physical growth varies child to child but their emotional, intellectual and social developments are at their hike during this period. However, it is true that most children education programs in Korea rather have focused on language while neglecting the emotional parts.

Director Im Jin-jae of Feeling Pocket Institute / Yaya Kids emphasizes that helping children develop their ability of cognition and expression is essential for them to train their emotion sound and healthy.

“We heard many times about early English education or special courses. They are everywhere. But how much have we cared for our children’s emotional parts? Emotional development indeed is very important for children to grow their ability to control negative thinking or feeling. It promotes confidence and self-esteem and helps them build a balanced relationship with other children” says Im.

Feeling Pocket Institute is an affiliate research institute of Kovicom, a design firm officially recognized by the Korea Institute of Industrial Design Promotion. The institute has taken the initiative in development and spread of emotional play programs that can help children grow their ability to express their emotions.

The programs went through tests in the fields in 2015. They are received as the first kind in Korea and are currently being used in 50 child care and education institutions nationwide from March this year.

A part of the programs ‘Feelings Pocket’, for example, helps children express how they feel at the moment or daily life and listen to other’s feeling and share the sympathies. It develops children’s EQ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient) and improves self-respect and confidence and grows understandability and problem solving skills.

Feeling Pocket Institute has developed 20 kinds of teaching aids and materials that can be used alongside the programs. ‘My Emotion Wheel’ and ‘My Emotion Temperature’ in particular induce children to express their feelings through different colors and forms that indicate each kind of emotion. ‘Emotion Vocabulary Care’, on the other hand, provides 45 kinds of emotion characters while ‘Children’s Emotional Expression’ contains 100 photos of children’s faces with different expressions.

“Open expression and interaction makes children happy”

Im stepped into children’s education in 1993 and established Yaya Kids in 2009 with his ambition to introduce advanced children’s education systems of the US to Korea. He introduced ‘Yaho Project’, differentiated curriculums, rich educational contents and excellent team of teachers to realize balanced development of children.

In 2015, he released ‘Children’s Emotional Expression’, a result of his years of R&D, for the first time in Korea and suggested a new paradigm for ‘emotion play’. The programs developed by Feeling Pocket Institute are applied to the field through Yaya Kids which has steadily created small but effective changes in children’s education in Korea.

“It is our goal to help children express their emotions open and honest so that they can spend a better and happier childhood. We think that our innovative teaching methods are not only good for children but also for teachers and parents to play the role as supporters of the children.”
