복합문화공간 ‘서희갤러리’, 용인에 문화의 씨앗을 심다
인구 100만의 도시 용인. 지속적인 도시 성장과 개발사업 아래 주요 광역시를 제외한 전국 4위의 대도시로 발돋움한 용인시이지만, 급속한 인구성장과는 달리 다양한 문화예술을 향유할 수 있는 인프라는 턱없이 부족한 것이 사실이다. 이러한 가운데 예술과 문화의 불모지와 같았던 용인시에 새로운 문화의 싹을 틔우고자 노력하고 있는 이가 있다. 바로 용인시 처인구에서 기흥구로 시민들을 위한 복합문화공간 ‘서희갤러리’를 운영하고 있는 서 희 관장이다.
지난 2013년 11월 개관한 서희갤러리는 여느 갤러리와는 차별화된 철학을 가지고 있다. ‘예술’이라는 장르가 우리에게 선사하는 따뜻한 위로와 치유의 정서, 사랑과 희망의 메시지라는 특별한 경험에서 소외된 이들에게 아름다운 미술과 음악의 세계를 알려야겠다는 서희 관장의 신념이 바로 그것이다. 서희 관장은 “집 밖을 나서면 어느 때고 손쉽게 문화예술을 즐길 수 있는 대도시와는 달리, 용인시민들은 이러한 혜택으로부터 소외되고 있었던 것이 사실입니다. 지역 문화예술의 발전을 위해서 누군가는 시작해야만 했고, 이뤄내야만 했던 일이었기에 조금이나마 보탬이 되고자 갤러리를 열게 되었습니다”라고 밝혔다. 
개관과 함께 ‘Finger Painting 아티스트 Gugu-Kim 개인전’을 개최한 서희갤러리는 2014년 개관 1주년을 맞이해 ‘박수근 탄생 100주년, 3대의 순수 초대전’을 진행한 바 있다. 또한, 2015년 4월 국회의원회관에서 세월호 전시 ‘소통, 화합 그리고 아름다운 약속전展’, 10월 킨텍스 ‘길 위에 묻다 박상남展’, 12월 삼청각 ‘빛 그리고 여정展’을 개최했으며, 지난 2016년 12월에는 용인시청 1층 로비에서 ‘Grace of monaco Queen 전시회’를 열어 여성·아동폭력을 예방하기 위한 메시지 전달과 함께, 그늘진 삶 속에서도 세상에 굴하지 않고 봉사와 사랑을 실천한 여성들의 아름다운 정신을 재조명하는 자리를 마련하기도 했다.

“상처받고 소외된 이들을 보듬는 따뜻한 갤러리가 되고 싶습니다”
서희 관장은 그간의 전시 중 가장 기억에 남는 것으로 2015년 진행한 세월호 전시를 꼽았다. 국민 모두의 가슴에 커다란 상처와 아픔을 남겼던 2014년 4월의 참사 이후 1년여 만에 마련된 이 전시는 그간의 다툼과 폭력, 부정을 넘어 새로운 소통과 화합, 그리고 대한민국이 다시 함께 웃을 수 있는 계기를 만들기 위한 목적에서 개최됐다. 서희 관장은 “국회에서 전시회를 열어본 경험이 없었기에 준비 과정에 어려움이 많았지만, 정세균 국회의장님의 도움으로 4월에 맞춰 전시를 열 수 있었습니다. 무엇보다 당시까지도 팽목항에서 힘겨운 시간을 보내고 있던 이들에게 ‘잊지 않았다’라는 메시지를 국민들을 대표해 전하고 싶었습니다”라고 말했다. 
이처럼 서희 관장이 갤러리의 활동을 통해 사람들에게 전하고자 하는 메시지는 분명하다. 예술을 통해 사람들의 상처와 아픔을 치유하고, 그 자리에 평화와 화합, 소통과 희망의 씨앗을 심는 것이다. 그리고 이것이야말로 ‘문화예술’이라는 장르가 더 나은 세상을 만들어가기 위해 해야만 하는 역할이자 소명이라는 것이 서희 관장의 생각이다. 그는 “문화란 세상을 향한 메시지를 전달하는 다리와도 같습니다. 삶에 대한 깨달음과 사회를 바라보는 인식의 변화를 통해 더 나은 삶으로 나아가고자 하는 희망의 메시지를 담아야 합니다”라고 말했다. 특히, 이러한 역할을 다하기 위해서는 홀로 고립되는 것이 아니라, 지역 주민과 소통하고 교감해야 한다는 생각에 그는 서희갤러리를 통해 다양한 문화예술 프로그램을 펼치고 있다. 서희갤러리에서는 매달 마지막 주 목요일마다 음악과 미술이 함께하는 특별한 전시회를 개최하고 있으며, 지역주민을 초청해 ‘서희갤러리와 함께하는 저녁스케치’ 행사를 열고 있다. 
머슬 매니아 심사위원, 한복 홍보대사 및 스포츠모델에 다양한 활동과 함께 
전 삼육교육어학원 킹스스피치(전경련) 지도교수와 한국와인협회 부회장을 역임했으며, 現 경기문화 예술위원회 예술위원장을 맡고 있는 서희 관장은 그간의 공로를 인정받아 한국언론사협회로부터 ‘국제평화언론대상 문화예술부문 우수상’을 수상한 바 있으며, ‘한국재능나눔대상’, ‘세계한류대상 최우수 공로상’, ‘서울 아세아미술 초대전 감사장’ 등을 수상하기도 했다. 앞으로도 소외된 이웃을 돕고, 아픔을 가진 이들에게 희망과 평화의 메시지를 전하는 뜻 깊은 전시를 열 계획이며, 더 많은 이들을 돕고자 서희갤러리를 ‘서희문화재단’으로 발전시켜 나갈 것이라는 서희 관장 빛을 주제로 세상의 모든 이들과 아름다운 동행을 이어가는 그의 노력이 우리 사회에 따뜻한 치유의 손길로 전해지길 바란다.

Message of hope and healing delivered by means of art and music

 ‘SeoHee gallery,’ a Multiplex cultural space, located in Yong-in city 
Yong-in with population of one million has become the 4th largest city in the nation except major metropolitan cities under a continued growth and development projects. Despite the rapid growth of population, the city is rather short of infrastructure to enjoy diverse cultures and arts. In such circumstances, Seo Hee, president of ‘Seohee Gallery,’ is running a multiplex cultural space for citizens at Woonhak-dong, cheoin-gu, Yong-in city in his efforts to sprout a new culture in Yong-in which used to be a wasteland of arts and culture. 
Seohee Gallery, which opened in November 2013, has different philosophy from other galleries. President Seo Hee has belief in telling a beautiful world of art and music to those who have been alienated from the special experience of warm comfort, sentiment of healing, message of love and hope presented by the genre of ‘arts.’ President Seo Hee clarified, “Unlike metropolitan cities, where one can easily enjoy culture and arts at any time once leaving their home, Yong-in citizens have been alienated from such benefits. Resolution of such problem must be initiated and achieved by someone, so I came to open the Gallery in order to help with all what I can.” 
With opening, SeoHee Gallery held a private show of finger printing artist Gugu-Kim’ and in 2014, marking the first anniversary of opening, carried out “Three-generation pure preview commemorating 100th anniversary of park Soo-geun’. Besides, In April 2015, they held an exhibition of Communication, Harmony and Smile Again for Sewol Ferry in National Assembly Members’ Hall, ‘Park Sang-nam Exhibition, Bury on the road’ (October, KINTEX), and ‘Light and Travel exhibition (Samchunggak, December). In December 2016, they held ‘Grace of Monaco Queen Exhibition’ on the first-floor lobby of Yong-in City Hall, delivering the message for preventing violence on women and children, and prepared an opportunity to illuminate the beautiful minds of women who practiced service and love without being daunted by the world even in their shaded life. 

“Want to become a warm gallery to embrace those hurt and alienated.” 
President Seo Hee counted Sewol Ferry exhibition held in 2015 as the most memorable of exhibitions so far. Being arranged in over one year after the calamity of April 2014 which left a big wound and pain in the hearts of the people, this exhibition was held to make a new momentum of communication, harmony and smile again in Korea. President Seo Hee said, “There were many difficulties in the process of preparation with no experience of holding an exhibition in the Assembly, but with the help of Jeong Se-gyun, the Speaker, we were able to hold the exhibition in time for April. Above all, I wanted to deliver the message ‘We have not forgotten” to those who were spending a hard time in Paengmok harbor still then.”
Like this, president Seo Hee has a clear message he wants to deliver to people through the activity of Gallery. It is to heal the people’s wound and pain through arts and plant the seed of peace, harmony , communication and hope there. According to president Seo Hee, this is the very role and mission for the genre of ‘culture and arts’ to perform in order to make a better world. He said, “Culture is a bridge to deliver a message to the world. So we must contain a message of hope to make for a better world through the realization of life and change of awareness toward the society.” Especially, to fulfill such a role, we need to communicate and sympathize with local residents rather than being alone, so he is carrying out diverse culture and arts programs through Seohee Gallery. Seohee Gallery is holding a special exhibition combining music and art every last Thursday of the month and giving the event of ‘Nighttime sketch together with Seohee Gallery’ by inviting local residents. 
President Seo Hee served as Samyook Language School professor for King’s speech (Federation of the Korean Industries) and vice president of Korea Wine Association while he is acting as the head of Gyeonggi Culture Arts Council. He received ‘International Peace and Press award for culture and arts from Korea Press Association, also winning ‘Grand prix of Korea Talent Sharing,’ ‘Best award for the global Hallyu,’ and ‘citation of Seoul Asian Art Preview.’ He is planning to hold meaningful exhibitions for helping the alienated and deliver the message of hope and peace to the painful and further, develop Seohee Gallery into ‘Seohee Culture Foundation’ to help more people. His efforts to be united with all the people in the world will be delivered to our society as a warm hand of healing.
