최근 대학교육의 패러다임이 크게 변화하고 있다. 역사상 최악으로 기록되고 있는 극심한 청년취업난 속에 학생들의 취업경쟁력과 실무역량을 강화하는 것이 대학의 역할로 부각되고 있기 때문이다. 이에 교육부와 한국산업기술진흥원에서는 학교 부서의 일부로 기업을 설치해 학생들에게는 기업의 현장체험 및 실습교육의 기회를 제공하고, 이를 통해 생긴 수익금을 교육에 재투자하기 위한 시스템인 ‘학교기업 지원사업’을 시행하고 있다. 

실무교육 및 창업지원 프로그램, 산업체 맞춤형 인재 양성에 주력
지난 4월, 3D애니메이션 제작 및 교육·홍보용 콘텐츠 제작 전문기업인 ㈜제펫스튜디오가 학교기업 지원사업의 2단계 평가에서 ‘계속지원’으로 선정되며, 오는 2019년까지 학교기업 운영을 이어나가게 되었다. 이번 평가에서 교육부는 기존에 운영되던 43개 학교기업 중 29개를 계속 지원 대상으로 13개 기업을 신규 지원 대상으로 확정했으며, 기존의 현장실습 뿐 아니라 학생 창업 지원을 위한 역량까지도 포함해 평가했다고 밝혔다.
㈜제펫스튜디오는 2013년도부터 운영된 ‘제펫스튜디오 연구소’의 경험을 기반으로 2015년 설립된 부천대학교 학교기업으로서 영상&게임콘텐츠과가 메인이 되어 운영되고 있으며, 정보통신과와 컴퓨터소프트웨어과가 교육프로그램에 참여하고 있다. 특히 애니메이션영화 ‘뽀로로’의 특수효과와 부천시 사회적경제조직의 홍보영상, 교육용애니메이션 작업 등을 수행하며 학교기업의 한계를 넘어 해당 업계에서의 입지를 다지고 있다. 현재 3D애니메이션 콘텐츠 제작파트, 홍보영상 콘텐츠 제작파트, 경영 및 제작지원 파트 등 총 3개 파트로 구성되어 운영되고 있는 ㈜제펫스튜디오는 최근 뉴미디어와 머천다이징, 교육용콘텐츠 부문까지도 영역을 확대하고 있으며 차세대 기술로 주목받는 VR콘텐츠 제작도 계획하고 있다. 
하나의 기업으로서 성장세를 구가하고 있지만 이들의 가장 큰 목적은 역시 ‘교육’이다. ㈜제펫스튜디오의 총괄책임을 맡고 있는 김양수 교수는 “학교기업의 중요한 역할 중 하나는 강의실에서의 전공교육을 현장에서의 실무 경험으로 연계해 산업체 맞춤형 실무인재를 양성하고, 이것이 해당 분야로의 취업 및 창업으로 이어질 수 있도록 돕는 것입니다”라고 설명했다.
특성화고 2~3학년 재학생을 대상으로 운영되는 ‘원스톱 인큐베이팅’ 프로그램은 3D애니메이션 부문 프리프로덕션, 메인프로덕션, 포스트프로덕션에 관한 내용으로 구성되어 있으며, 1단계 하계방학기간 단기 인큐베이팅, 2단계 현장실습 참여, 3단계 실무적응 및 채용 등의 단계별 프로그램으로 진행된다. 이러한 과정을 거친 학생들 중 우수한 학생을 선발해 ㈜제펫스튜디오 및 협력기업으로 취업을 연계하고 있으며, 지금까지 상당수의 학생들이 취업에 성공해 해당 분야에서 자신의 역량을 발휘하고 있다. 또한 인문계 고교생 대상의 프로그램도 총 20차시로 운영 중에 있다. 이에 한 업계 관계자는 “학생들이 조기에 현장실무를 경험해 볼 수 있다는 것은 자신에게 부족한 것을 깨닫고, 산업체 맞춤형 인재로 성장하기 위해 스스로를 갈고닦을 수 있는 기회가 된다는 점에서 매우 효과적인 방법입니다”라고 전하기도 했다. 
이외에 부천대학교 재학생들을 위한 프로그램 운영도 이들의 주된 설립목적 중 하나다. ㈜제펫스튜디오는 학생들의 취업경쟁력을 강화시키기 위한 방편으로 콘텐츠 제작 기술교육과 실무 프로젝트 참여가 결합된 「실무연계 현장실습(3+5)」 프로그램을 시행하고 있다. 또한 일반적인 창업 소양교육을 넘어 제작기술력 향상을 위한 특강 및 멘토링, 콘텐츠 제작 수주와 품질 및 제작일정 관리를 창업 이후까지 계속해서 지원하는 「창업케어시스템」도 함께 운영하고 있다. 이러한 프로그램들은 연계학과 및 참여학과의 취업률 상승에 크게 이바지할 뿐 아니라 창업기업의 운영유지에도 든든한 기반이 되고 있다는 평을 받고 있다. 

무한한 잠재력 갖춘 영상·문화콘텐츠 산업에 주목하라
학교기업 운영에 있어 무엇보다 중요한 것은 학생들의 실무역량을 향상시킬 수 있는 교육프로그램과 함께 매출부문에 관한 계획과 차별화 전략이 체계적으로 갖춰져 있어야 한다는 점이다. ㈜제펫스튜디오는 먼저 콘텐츠제작 교육 및 특강을 전개해 학생들의 역량을 끌어올리고 콘텐츠 샘플제작을 통해 실무경험을 축적할 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 이와 함께 발주사의 피드백과 자체적인 콘텐츠 보완 과정을 거쳐 제작 계약을 체결해 영상&게임콘텐츠과 정규과정 주간/야간반 학생들이 3교대 형식으로 참여하고 있으며, 제작에 바로 투입이 어려운 학생들의 경우에는 별도의 개인별 맞춤형 교육을 통해 프로젝트에 참여할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다. 
프로젝트에 참여한 구성원들은 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 발주사 및 협력기업 맞춤형 콘텐츠 제작 기술력을 갖추게 됨으로써 제작사에서 실무재교육 기간 없이 곧바로 담당직무를 수행할 수 있다는 경쟁력을 확보하게 되며, 졸업 전까지 급여를 받으며 경력을 쌓고, 졸업 후 2년 경력자 연봉계약과 함께 3D애니메이션 및 3D게임그래픽, VFX제작사에서 전문가로 일할 수 있다는 강점을 가진다.
한편, ㈜제펫스튜디오가 더욱 주목받는 까닭은 ‘콘텐츠 시장’이 고부가가치 산업으로서 갖고 있는 무한한 성장 가능성 때문이다. 이에 김양수 총괄책임은 “고도로 발달한 네트워크 기술과 생활 곳곳에 침투하고 있는 SNS는 더 이상 영상미디어의 틀을 TV에만 한정 짓기 어려운 ‘뉴미디어’의 시대로 우리를 이끌고 있습니다. 각종 1인 미디어나 유튜브, 페이스북 등이 새로운 미디어 창구로 주목받고 있으며, 그에 따른 관련 산업의 수요 또한 폭증하고 있습니다”라고 조언했다. 
이러한 현실 속에서 학교기업 ㈜제펫스튜디오의 전공·실무 연계 시스템은 시대가 요구하는 실무형 전문 인재를 양성하는데 무엇보다 효과적이라는 게 그의 생각이다. 실제로 지난 4월 부천대학교에 방문한 한국산업기술진흥원 정재훈 원장은 “학교기업 지원사업은 학교교육과 산업체 맞춤형 실무교육을 전개할 수 있는 아이템”이라며, ㈜제펫스튜디오를 자립화 단계로 성장시키기 위한 지원을 아끼지 않겠다고 밝힌 바 있다. 또한 지난 5월에 방문한 남경필 경기도지사는 4차 산업혁명시대의 변화를 이끌어가기 위한 새로운 아이디어와 일자리 창출의 필요성을 역설하며, 다양한 플랫폼을 통해 청년세대의 성장을 지원하겠다는 뜻을 밝히기도 했다. 21세기 신성장동력으로 주목받고 있는 영상&문화콘텐츠 산업의 중심지로 우뚝 설 ㈜제펫스튜디오를 주목해 볼 필요가 있다.

Fostering industry-driven talents through practical training and startup programs

Jeppet Studio is a company specialized in produce of 3D animations and educational contents. At the Support Eligibility Appraisal of the Ministry of Education taken place last April, 29 out of 43 school companies secured ‘continuous support’ and Jeppet Studio was one of them. The appraisal included the capability of field training and startup support and the winner schools showed excellence in both areas. 

Jeppet Studio started from Jeppet Studio Research Center in 2013 and has grown to be an enterprise run in connection with the Department of Image & Game Contents of Bucheon University in 2015. The Department of Information & Communication and the Department of Computer Software are also participating in the training programs of Jeppet Studio.

Jeppet Studio proved its capability by taking charge in special effect of Pororo and a PR production of a social economy organization in Bucheon City as well as producing an educational animation. Jeppet Studio is run in three departments: 3D Animation Contents Production, Commercial Contents Production, and Management & Production Support. Recently, the company is expanding its business scope to new media, merchandizing and as far as VR contents. 

Kim Yang Soo, the chief office of Jeppet Studio and the dean of the Department of Visual & Game Contents says “One of the important roles of school companies is to foster industry-driven talents through practical training that can also create a synergy effect in the startup market.”

As an effort to fulfill the important role, Jeppet Studio introduced ‘One Stop Incubating’. It is designed for the second and the third year special high school students to grow their skills necessary for the pre-production, main production and post-production of 3D animations. The first phase short term incubating programs are run during the summer holiday followed by the second phase field training and the third phase application and employment. 

Outstanding students can continue their study at Jeppet Studio or work at partner companies. A number of students who went through the programs are proving their confidence in related fields at the moment. Jeppet Studio also runs a 20 session program for students of academic high schools to keep the balance with special high schools. 

An industry official said “Early field training is very effective educational method as students can experience the real skills used in the field and know what they need to prepare.”

 

In terms of the university programs, Jeppet Studio runs ‘Field Training 3+5 Program’. The program combines contents production technology training with practical projects. Jeppet Studio also runs ‘Startup Care System’. The system covers from general startup education and production skills to mentoring, securing production orders, quality management and production schedule. Both ‘Field Training 3+5 Program’ and ‘Startup Care System’ are well received for making contributions to participation of related departments, to increasing the employment rate and to maintaining the sustainable management of the startup enterprises.

Paying attention to image and cultural contents that have limitless possibilities

Running a school company successfully requires not only securing the students’ technical abilities but also the differentiated marketing strategies. For this, Jeppet Studio’s special lectures and training on contents production focuses on making contents samples, gathering feedbacks and securing an order. Currently, the students of the Department of Image & Game Contents are engaged in the special lectures and training by a rotation in three shifts and the students who are not possible for these programs can do the same through the customized lectures and training instead. 

The participant students are expected to improve their abilities in producing contents on demand. This is important as it will lead students to direct employment of the companies relating to 3D animations and graphics or VFX productions without an internship period. Also, they can receive by the industry as 2 year experienced employees and they can even build their career by being paid during the academic years. 

But the reason Jeppet Studio comes into more attention is because the contents market is rising as a high valued added future industry with limitless growth possibilities. Kim Yang Soo, Chief Officer of Jeppet Studio, says “The widespread of SNS is leading us to a world of new media over the traditional TV broadcasting. One man media, YouTube and Facebook are good examples and the spin off industry is also rapidly growing at the moment.”

Chung Jae-Hoon, the president of the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, who paid a visit to Bucheon University last April said “The school company support project is designed to help appointed schools to carry out industry-driven training and education.” He added that he would provide an unsparing effort for Jeppet Studio to grow as an independent body. 

Nam Kyung-pil, the governor of Gyeonggi Province, also paid a visit to the university last May and emphasized on job creation through new and innovative ideas in the coming age of the 4th Industrial Revolution and added that he would support young generations through a variety of platforms. 

Image and cultural contents in deed are receiving by many as one of the most promising new growth engines and we need to pay attention to a company like Jeppet Studio for the innovation they will bring to the future Korean society.
