Reinterpretation of local landscape in crowding and complementary colors
Beauty of the landscape around Heuksando and Mokpo
Artist director Park Deuk-soon of Park Deuk Soon Art Museum

‘2017 Solo Exhibition – The Formative World of Moonam Park Deuk Soon’
Talking about Heuksando Island, skate (fish) comes first to our mind. However, it might be unkind not to mention about the local artist Park Deuk-soon who was born and grew on the island and has shifted the beautiful landscapes of the area and the lives of the people onto the canvas for many years.

He served as the president of the Oriental Writings and Paintings Cultural Exchange Association and a judge of the Grand Exhibition of Korea. He built Park Deuk Soon Art Museum on the island in May 2015 at his own expanse and also with the support of Sinan County.

He held his first solo exhibition titled ‘Landscape of So Heuksando’ in 1969 and has depicted the passion and folksy sentiment of the region onto the canvas ever since. Park is famous for using Korean paper and ink, application of color contrasts, dotted images and the vitality of the objects expressed in red, blue and yellow.

Park leaves the simplicity of Korean painting as represented with blackness and lines but gave details and symmetry to his work ‘Mokpo Harbor’ while applying the Korean ink and watercolor techniques to compare large boats with small ones to give a realistic feel to his work ‘Homecoming’.

To take some more examples, he presented a harmony of colors with a bunch of peonies to the work ‘Peony’, delivered a hope with dots, lines and reddish anthers to the work ‘Blue Chrysanthemum’, gave abstract realism with peonies reorganized with the red background and black lines to the work ‘Vitality’, and realized a contrast of blue and red with blurring effect and an element of folk paintings to the work ‘Heuksando Skate’. It is a characteristic of Park’s style that he depicts a tree with reconstruction of the shape from the stem and bottom part.

Park is often praised as an artist who has shown new view points and directions for the Korean paintings for the last 60 years. Gathering his creative zeal one more time, he is holding a solo exhibition titled ‘2017 Solo Exhibition – The Formative World of Moonam Park Deuk Soon’ for 6 days from 8 September this year at the Mokpo Art Center. 30 of realistic works, 25 of half-abstract works and 25 of abstract works are to be displayed at the exhibition.

Alongside the exhibition, Park is organizing a communication event with visitors to explain the creating process of the works of the local landscape displayed at the exhibition.

If you are an art lover, you might want to travel down to the Mokpo Art Center to appreciate the precise depictions, splendid colors, excellent observations and the crowding of lines and dots all present in his works.
