우리의 전통 예술인 서각은 나무를 깎아 입체적으로 만들어내는 미적 감각을 필요로 한다. 그렇기 때문에 서각을 하는 작가들은 자신의 작품 세계를 더욱 심화시키기 위해 다양한 방법을 발전시켜 왔다. 전통적인 필체와 각법을 중시하는 전통서각에서부터 여러 가지 필체의 변형이나 형형색색의 색채 등을 더한 현대서각 등 다양한 장르에서 각양각색의 작가들이 활발한 활동을 벌이고 있는 것이다. 지난 2016년 대한민국 부채예술대전에서 서울특별시장상과 종합대상을 수상하여 널리 주목받고 있는 수월(水月) 송용주 명장은 척박한 국내의 서각 환경 속에서도 자신만의 세계를 창조해가고 있는 대표적인 작가다.

서각의 길 독특한 작품 세계 구축해
충청북도 제천 출신의 송용주 명장은 어려서부터 미술에 대한 꿈을 꿨다고 한다. 그러던 중 친구의 소개로 1987년 목공예를 배우기 시작한 것이 올해로 30년이 되었다. 처음에는 서각, 즉 예술 분야로 나가고자 한 것은 아니었지만 시간이 지남에 따라 서각의 독특한 매력을 스스로 알게 되어 그 길로 나아가게 된 것이었다. 서각의 길로 나아가고자 했던 그에게 가장 큰 역할을 했던 것은 서각 명인이자 강원전통문화연구회 단초 심종보 선생님과 그의 제자였던 호산 김주연 선생님이었다.
송 명장은 “서각은 하면 할수록 깊이가 있고 배워야 할 부분이 많아 더 열심히 공부를 해야겠다고  새삼 느낀다. 저를 지금까지 이끌어주신 단초 선생님과 호산 선생님이 없었다면 새로운 서각을 만들고자 하는 저의 꿈을 실현시키기 어려웠을 것이다. 각을 하기 위해 작품 구상, 나무 선정 등 많은 시간과 노력을 쏟아 남과 다른 나만의 독특한 작품을 탄생시키기 위해 부단한 노력과 열정으로 전통과 현대를 적절히 아우르는 작품을 만들어 대중들과 소통의 장을 열고자 한다”라고 언급했다. 
또한 송 명장은 “요즘은 현대서각이 많은 비중을 얻고 있지만, 그렇다고 해서 전통서각을 무시해서는 안 된다. 전통서각을 바탕으로 발달해 온 현대서각 역시 점차 다양해지고 있는 상황이어서 뛰어난 작가일수록 더욱 기초를 강조해야 한다”라고 말했다. 그의 수많은 조각칼을 보면, 많은 세월 조각을 위해 살아온 송 명장의 삶을 엿볼 수 있다. 30여 년의 경력을 자신의 작품 속에 녹여내고 있는 송 명장은 다양한 방면으로 전시회와 공모전 등에 참여하며 자신의 이름을 새삼 널리 알려가기 시작했다.

‘2016 대한민국 부채예술대전’ 종합대상․서울특별시장상 수상해
작년 7월 인사동 라메르갤러리에서 전시 개최
송 명장이 지금의 명성을 갖게 된 계기는 작년 7월 열린 ‘2016 대한민국 부채예술대전’에서 ‘매화도’, ‘도원도’, ‘무릉도원도’라는 작품으로 종합대상과 서울특별시장상을 받게 된 것이었다. 그는 “그 전에는 공모전 같은 행사에 대해 잘 모르고 오로지 작품 활동만으로 세월을 보냈다. 그러던 중 전통미술협회 명장협회 박상근 이사장님과의 인연으로 공모전을 소개받고 처음으로 대한민국 부채예술대전에 작품을 내게 되었다. 저로서는 또 다른 데뷔를 한 셈인데 그런 저에게 서울시장상과 종합대상을 준 것은 저로서도 큰 영광이 아닐 수 없다”라고 밝혔다.
‘2016 대한민국 부채예술대전’은 (사)한국전통문화예술진흥협회가 주최한 행사로 30회 이상 꾸준히 이어져 왔으며, 한국화와 서양화, 전통민화, 서예, 서각 등 다양한 분야에서 우리의 전통 공예품인 부채의 아름다움을 널리 알리는 작가들을 발굴하기 위해 제정되었다. 특히 2016년 대전에서는 1,000여 점 이상의 시상작들이 7월 4일 인사동 라메르갤러리에서 전시되었으며, 당일에는 시상식도 함께 개최되어 많은 관객들과 만나는 자리를 마련했다. 이후에도 작품들을 위해 꾸준히 매진한 결과 송 명장은 이후 제35회 대한민국 미술대전 전통미술 공예부문/서각 입선, 제6회 대한민국 각자대전 특선 등 다양한 부문에서 여러 성과를 창출했다.

또한 현재 송 명장은 지난 3월부터 (사)한국각자협회 이사이자 수원지부장으로서 대한민국 서각의 발전을 위한 행보도 활발히 이어가고 있으며 현재 (사)한국각자협회․(사)한국전통문화예술진흥협회 초대작가로도 활동하고 있다. “우리 서각 작가들 역시 새로운 관객들의 요구에 맞게 다변화를 모색해야 한다고 생각한다. 옛날부터 오랫동안 서각 작업을 해온 분들은 요즘 사람들이 보기에 많이 밋밋한 작품을 만들 수밖에 없다. 그래서 일반인의 눈에도 와 닿고 대중화가 될 수 있는 작품을 만드는 것이 저의 바람이다. 서각은 천 년을 이끌어온 예술이며, 앞으로도 천 년을 갈 수 있는 잠재력이 있다. 그렇기 때문에 더욱 많은 사람들이 서각의 참 맛을 느낄 수 있는 시대가 되었으면 한다”라고 밝혔다.
한편 송 명장은 올해 대한민국전통명장협회에서 명장으로 선정되어 지난달 15일 대학로에서 명장인증 수여식을 갖기도 했다. 오랫동안 한 길을 걸어온 그의 저력이 더욱 빛나게 되었던 계기라고 할 수 있다. 송 명장은 끝으로 “명장이라는 칭호를 얻고 나니 스스로도 매우 기쁜 마음이다. 앞으로도 서각을 배우고자 하는 많은 분들과 함께 작품을 만들어나가며 후학 양성 또한 힘쓰고자 한다. 앞으로는 더욱 열정적으로 서각의 매력을 널리 알리고 싶다”라는 포부를 밝혔다.

Carving letters and soul on wood and winning Seoul mayor’s prize

Walking the single path as a master wood carver for life
Suwol Song Yong-ju was born in Jecheon City. He said he had a great interest in art since he was a child. Along the way, one of his friends introduced him wood craft in 1987 and it has become his life time career for 30 years. 

He soon started to develop his interest in seogak (carving letters on wood) and realized the beauty of the craft and jumped into it without looking back. He learned the technique under the instruction of a seogak master Dancho Sim Jeong-bo (director of the Gangwon Traditional Culture Research Society) and his pupil Kim Su-hyun.

“The more I do seogak the more I feel the need of study. I’m not who I am today without the direction and instruction of Dancho Sim Jeong-bo. So I feel a sense of duty to create great works where tradition and modernism are combined in harmony through passion and effort and with my works I would like to communicate with people” says Song.

“It is true that modern seogak is gaining more popularity than traditional one nowadays. But we must not forget that it has developed based on the traditional methods and technique. Many great seogak artists, in fact, are those who have built their foundation on the rock of tradition.”

 We might glimpse Song’s life if we see the carving knives he has. Those knives have lived their lives alongside Song for more than 30 years as trustworthy companions. And their truly inseparable friendship is well melted into the works of Song that have been displayed in many exhibitions.

Winning Seoul mayor’s prize
Song’s life time devotion to seogak was well rewarded at the 2016 Korean Fan Art Exhibition by winning Seoul mayor’s prize and general grand prize with his works ‘Mahwado’, ‘Dowondo’ and ‘Mureungdowondo’. 

“I didn’t know anything about competitions but only creating my works. Then I came to know of Park Sang-geun, the president of the Master Craftsmen Association of Traditional Arts, and he encouraged me to participate. And the Korean Fan Art Exhibition was the first official competition I displayed my works and luckily I won the Seoul mayor’s prize and the general grand prize.”

The Korean Fan Art Exhibition has been held more than 30 times by the Traditional Culture Arts Promotion Association and it covers from fans and folk paintings to Oriental and Western paintings, calligraphy and seogak. More than 1,000 works were displayed at Gallery La Mer in Insa-dong last year. Continuing his passion, some of Song’s works were selected for the 35th Grand Exhibition of Korea and he also received a special prize at the 6th Korea Seogak Exhibition. 

A seogak master of Korea Master Craftsmen Association
Song is a board member, an invitational seogak master, and the head of Suwon branch, of the Korea Seogak Association. 

“I think seogak artists need to diversify their style in order to respond to ever changing demand of the people. So it is my hope to create works that can attract the eyes of people and spread this traditional craft to more people. Seogak has a thousand year history and has a potential to last another thousand years. I hope more people can enjoy the charm of seogak.”

Meanwhile, Song was appointed as a seogak master (of woodcraft relievo) by the Korea Master Craftsmen Association and received a certificate on 15 last month at Daehangno, Seoul. He said “I’m really glad to earn the title. And I will return this honor by actively fostering talented young seogak artists and by spreading the beauty of seogak to more people.”
