With accelerating globalization, it is not easy to climb one’s way to the top in any field of career. A company not only has to survive in a fierce struggle for existence in a narrow domestic market but also must distinguish itself in clear differentiation and excellence among global enterprises with technology and huge capital at the head. This is why we cannot help being surprised at the success of HMW whose presence is definitely being felt overseas as well as at home. In this issue, <the Monthly Power Korea> met Lee Yoo-cheol, president of HMW to hear their secret to success. 


The first and only enterprise to produce clad pipe
HMW is an enterprise which performs welding construction and produces the world’s top-class welding material and the only clad pipe of its kind in Korea. Since the foundation in 2006, they did overlay and hard surfacing toll processing for POSCO etc. but in 2011, based on the technology and knowhow piled up, entered into pure manufacture, such as special piping, and have built themselves up so far in the field of welding. 
Especially, the clad pipe, which the company succeeded in mass production for the first time in Korea through continued investment in R&D and research on advanced technologies, had its quality recognized by the industrial world at home and abroad and became the foothold of the company’s growth. President Lee Yoo-cheol explained, “Pipe made of clad material has excellent durability, anti-corrosiveness and physical properties so it has been widely used in high-pressure and high-corrosion environment such as pipe for conveyance, gas plant, nuclear power generation, off-shore platform and shipbuilding. So far, however, because of poor domestic technology, we had to import the whole quantity from overseas and suffer a high price caused by monopoly and oligopoly and difficulty in management and feedback.” HMW signed an agreement with Canada’s Suncor Energy for 16 billion won’s quantity of project for the first time in Korea and supplied at a defective rate of 0% with recognition of its excellence in the global market. It also supplied products to the site of overseas plant projects of Samsung Engineering, Hyundai Construction, POSCO, etc. helping domestic enterprises strengthen their global competitiveness. 
Besides, based on the rich experience and specified technology piled up in the fields of hard surfacing and overlay welding, they are providing the best special welding service in the country’s field of leading basic installation as well as technical consulting, such as operating facility system for specified welding automation and vicarious execution for special tests, maintaining a close partnership with customers. They are contributing to technical development of domestic PWHT (Post Weld Heat Treatment) through selling and constructing the world’s only portable heat treatment equipment by induction. 


Innovation of the mindset and voluntary participation determine the future of an enterprise.
HMW was designated in 2009 as a ‘parts & materials enterprise selected by the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy, selected as technological-innovation and management-innovation smaller enterprise (2013), certified as venture enterprise (2014), Pohang-city’s promising smaller enterprise (2016) and youth-friendly small but powerful company by the Employment & Labor Ministry (2016), proving one of the companies currently receiving the most attention. Besides, after having its attached research institute recognized in 2014, the company was selected as Gyeongbuk’s main supported R&D project managed by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources (2016), Pohang’s short-term technology consulting support project, and then last May, as a partner enterprise for KITECH, which provided the base to take off into a technology leader in the global market as well as at home through close technological cooperation, including joint R&D and use of qualified professionals.   
To strengthen each staff’s professional capabilities, HMW is unsparingly investing in rearing technical manpower by inviting outside specialists to systematic internal education system including work-learning parallel system, industrial site professor and operator’s self-training and it was selected as a talent rearing smaller enterprise. in 2016. Accordingly, besides internal human resources, with an aim to cultivate Korea’s professional technical manpower required by the industrial site, the company is managing the training for welder and plant code twice a year in Seoul and Busan, respectively, by investing the whole amount of working expenses. This training program is carried out by inviting professionals from home and abroad with both technique and knowledge related to welding and plant and teaching techniques and live on-hand experiences and it is an opportunity for the site workers to strengthen technological capabilities through systematic customized training. Besides, the company biannually holds and sponsors seminar, society and symposium related to welding and plant with repute of contributing to the development of domestic field of welding and plant.       
For HMW which is advancing toward the global Top 3 with the goal of achieving 200 billion won in sales, management philosophy is ‘the best technology leading the market,’ ‘trust with organization members and customers,’ and ‘an enterprise which enriches the society..’ Especially, believing that fulfilling social responsibility is a company’s value of existence and duty, president Lee Yoo-cheol clarified, “Even until now, it is true that our society’s view of smaller companies is filled with misunderstanding and prejudice. We are going to take the lead in breaking such a deep-rooted wrong bias toward smaller companies by exerting ourselves with training programs for human resources in staff salary and welfare system on the similar level to a large enterprise.”  In addition, he requested, “I deeply sympathize with a difficulty suffered by smaller companies of Korea but after all, ways to overcome this must be found within oneself. You will never be successful by only desiring the government’s help or support. Minor enterprisers should innovate themselves and turn that thought on its head and executives and staffers should have a mindset to do the best all the time instead of being lazy and easygoing.”
