중소기업의 경쟁력은 곧 국가의 경쟁력으로 이어진다. 우수한 기술력을 보유한 강소기업의 존재가 지속가능한 국가발전이나 선진국으로의 도약 가능성을 가늠할 수 있는 잣대가 되기 때문이다. 이에 이번호 <월간 파워코리아>에서는 독보적인 기술력을 바탕으로 세계 시장을 향한 도전을 이어오고 있는 고탄소강관 및 합금강관 전문기업 엠에스파이프㈜를 찾아가 봤다.

고가의 수입 제품 대체, 원가 절감으로 경쟁력 강화 실현
경북 포항철강산업단지에 위치한 엠에스파이프㈜는 2005년 설립된 이래 기계 구조용 탄소강관과 합금, 고압 배관 및 특수 정밀가공용 합금강관을 주로 생산하며 지속적인 성장을 일궈왔다. 그 가운데서도 특히, 외경 114.3mm 이하 강관을 최적의 성형 기술과 전기저항용접(ERW) 방식으로 만들어낸 고강도, 극후육 재료관은 높은 치수 정밀도와 우수한 용접성을 자랑하며 기계구조 및 자동차구조용 소재로 공급되고 있다. 엠에스파이프의 박중호 대표는 “저희는 이미 1997년부터 강관 성형 Roll 제작에 대한 풍부한 경험과 기술력을 축적해 왔으며, 이러한 원천기술을 바탕으로 엠에스파이프를 설립하고 기존의 심리스 강관을 대체할 수 있는 제품을 개발하고자 노력해왔습니다”라고 설명했다.
여기서 ‘심리스 강관’이란 용접 이음새가 없는 강철관을 뜻하는 명칭으로 용접에 의해 발생되는 각종 결함으로부터 자유로워 자동차, 중장비, 발전, 에너지플랜트 등 고온·고압의 유체 흐름을 견뎌야 하는 라인에 필수적으로 사용되는 소재이다. 하지만 국내에는 생산업체가 없어 연간 60만t 가량의 물량을 유럽과 일본으로부터의 수입에 의존하고 있었으며, 값비싼 비용 또한 감수해야만 했던 것이 사실이었다. 그러나 엠에스파이프에서 생산한 제품은 T/OD를 26%까지 끌어올려 내구성과 안전성이 뛰어나며, 가격도 상대적으로 저렴해 고가의 심리스 강관을 대체할 수 있는 제품으로 각광받고 있다. 또한 고객의 요구사항에 따라 강종, 두께, 용도에 대한 맞춤형 생산이 가능해 자동차용 소재는 물론 중장비, 토목용 부품 등에 두루 활용되고 있다. 박 대표는 “기존의 시장은 용도에 따라 수입 심리스 강관과 국내 용접 강관을 사용하는 것으로 양분되어 있었습니다. 저희가 생산한 제품은 일반적인 용접 강관의 영역에서 극한까지 심리스 강관에 다가간 것으로 저렴한 가격에 심리스를 대체할 수 있어 원가절감을 통한 경쟁력 강화의 효과를 기대할 수 있습니다”라며 자부심을 표했다. 

특화된 기술력이 바로 중소기업 성장의 근간
기존에 없던 기술에 대한 새로운 도전은 언제나 그렇듯 수많은 어려움을 동반하기 마련이다. 엠에스파이프 또한 강관 성형 Roll Design에 대한 기술력과 노하우는 갖고 있었지만, 심리스 강관을 대체하는 용접 강관 생산에 있어서는 맨손으로 시작하는 것이나 다름없었다. 박 대표는 “기술개발 초기, 아무런 생산기술도 없는 상황에서 수많은 시행착오를 겪어야 했습니다. 용도와 재료, 품질 개발 과정에서 수천, 수만 번의 실패를 거듭했으며, 이를 수행할 전문 기능 인력의 양성에도 오랜 시간의 노력과 인내가 필요했습니다”라고 회상했다. 
모두가 선택하는 쉬운 길이 아니라, 이토록 어렵고 힘든 길을 선택했던 이유는 ‘특화된 기술’을 보유하는 것만이 중소기업이 살아남을 수 있는 유일한 방법이라는 박중호 대표의 확신이 있었기 때문이다. 박 대표는 “과거 10여 년간 유럽시장의 강관 Roll Design에 대한 컨설팅 수행하면서 세계적인 경제 침체기에도 꾸준한 성장을 일궈내고 있는 기업들은 모두 어느 특정 분야에 특화된 High-Quality의 기술력을 보유하고 있다는 점을 알 수 있었습니다. 반면 백화점식으로 모든 제품을 전부 다루는 기업들은 오래 살아남지 못한다는 걸 깨달았습니다”라고 설명했다.

“탁월한 기술력과 경쟁력으로 세계 시장에 도전할 것”
현재 엠에스파이프는 본격적인 해외진출을 위한 단계를 밟아나가고 있다. 지난해부터 제품품질이 매우 까다롭다는 일본시장에 재료관을 수출하고 있으며, 또한, 지난 11월, 포항시의 ‘유망강소기업지원 수출 지원 프로그램’의 일환으로 참여한 베트남 수출상담회에서 오토바이 부품 공급업체와 계약을 성사시켜 연간 90만 불의 수출 실적을 달성했으며, 이와 연계해 인도네시아 오토바이 부품사와도 접촉을 이어오고 있다. 또한 지난 4월에는 인도 뭄바이철강박람회에 참여해 뭄바이에 소재한 UB사와 컨텍에 성공했으며, 현재 80만 불 상당의 수출 계약 협상을 진행 중이다. 이에 더해 최근 출시한 스프링클러용 탄소강관도 높은 성장세를 이끌고 있는 제품이다. 이 제품은 국내 기업으로서는 유일하게 미국 UL인증 및 미국 화재보험사 인증규격(FM) 인증을 획득했으며, 현재 캐나다, 미국, 멕시코로 수출되고 있다. 
지난해 2월 한국산업단지공단 대경권기업성장지원센터 육성기업, 6월 포항시 유망강소기업으로 선정된 바 있는 엠에스파이프는 앞으로 해외 수출에 더욱 주력해 현재 전체 매출의 25%에 해당하는 수출 비중을 40%까지 높인다는 계획이다. 또한 이를 기반으로 오는 2019년까지 매출 500억 원, 향후 5년 내 매출 1,000억 원에 도전한다는 것이 이들의 목표다. 박중호 대표는 “포항시의 지원 사업을 통해 해외 수출을 위한 판로를 개척할 수 있었습니다. 앞으로 새로운 신규 시장 개척과 수출 확대에 매진하여 글로벌 무대로의 성공적인 안착을 이뤄내는 것이 저희들의 바람입니다”라고 밝혔다. 이에 덧붙여 그는 “지방에 소재한 중소기업의 가장 큰 애로사항은 우수한 인력 수급에 어려움이 많다는 점입니다. 산학 연계나 직업박람회 등의 지원 사업을 통해 지역의 인재들이 중소기업에서 자신의 꿈을 펼칠 수 있는 기회를 찾길 바랍니다”라고 전했다. 끊임없는 혁신과 도전을 통해 언제나 ‘깨어있는 기업’이고 싶다는 이들의 열정이 대한민국의 도약을 이끌 밑거름이 되어 주기를 기대한다.

Competitive price replaces the imported
MS Pipe, located in the Pohang Steel Industry Complex, was established in 2005. The company has made a significant growth for the last 12 years with cutting edge manufacturing skills in steel pipe, high pressure pipe and alloy steel pipe used for special precision processing. 

The ‘high-intensity and ultra-thick material pipe’, among many innovative pipes of MS Pipe, boasts high dimensional precision and excellent weldability and, for this reason, used as a material for machine and automobile structures. To make the pipe, the company used optimum molding technology and ERW (Elastic Resistance Welding) to turn the steel pipes with less than 114.3mm to the ‘high-intensity and ultra-thick material pipe’. 

“We have accumulated our technology and experience in steel molding rolls since 1997 and MS Pipe today is the result of these two valuable elements. We also have exerted much of our effort in development of the pipe that can replace expensive imported seamless steel pipe” explains CEO Park Joong-ho of MS Pipe. 

Seamless steel pipe has no welding joints which make the pipe free from faults caused by welding. It is resistant to high temperature and pressure and therefore used as an essential material for automobile, heavy equipment and energy plant. The problem, however, is that Korea imports 600,000 tons of this expensive pipe from Europe and Japan every year which is a burden to many businesses in Korea. 

In this respect, MS Pipe’s development of the alternative pipe is but such a remarkable feat: it raises T/OD by up to 26% and boasts excellent durability and safety but the price is relatively cheaper than the imported. The pipe also can be made into different intensity, thickness and purpose depending on the client’s need.

“Technology is the growth engine of small and medium businesses”
Development of new technologies is always challenging and one must endure many trials and errors. And the case was no different for MS Pipe to develop the pipe that can replace the imported seamless steel pipe. 

“We secured technologies and knowhow in the steel molding roll design but we literally knew nothing about how and where to start. So we went through tens of thousands of mistakes during the development process. Naturally, it also took us a long time to secure specialists in the field.”

The reason CEO Park has been tenaciously clinging to ‘specialized technologies’ was because he realized that that was the only way for small and medium businesses to survive.

“We carried out consulting on European steel roll design for 10 years and we came to know that strong companies possessed one or more of specialized high quality technologies that can represent the company. And it was a moment of awakening.”

Challenging the global market over Korea
With these remarkable achievements, MS Pipe is pushing forward pioneering overseas market at the moment. The products of MS Pipe are being exported to Japan and the company signed a $900,000 contract with a Vietnamese motorbike parts supplier at an export consulting held by Pohang City last November as part of the promising small and medium company export support program. An $800,000 deal is also under negotiation with UB, an Indian steel company located in Mumbai. 

The recently released carbon steel pipe designed for sprinklers, in addition, makes a rapid growth in the market. The pipe made MS Pipe as the first Korean company which obtained a certificate from UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and FM (Factory Mutual) in the US and the pipe, as a result, is being exported to the US, Canada and Mexico. 

In recognition of these achievements, MS Pipe was designated as an incubation enterprise by the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation in February last year and as a promising small but strong enterprise by Pohang City last June. Taking the momentum, CEO Park is planning to increase export sales to 40% from the current 25% with a bigger goal to achieve 50 billion won ($43M) sales by 2019 and 100 billion won within five years. 

“The support of Pohang City took a great part for us to be able to pave the way to enter overseas markets. I believe that a continuous support for small and medium businesses, especially in the field of manpower fostering and industry-university cooperation, will create more jobs and will give more opportunities for local companies to expand their business scope to overseas market over Korea.”
