President Nam Goong-seung of Korea Feng-Shui Theory Association
“We will show better ways for national prosperity”

Passing down and development of Feng-Shui theory
Feng-Shui (geomancy) has a one thousand years of history practiced in China, Korea and Japan. Koreans in particular have turned it to a unique area of study that suits the topography of the Korean Peninsula from deciding the capital city and the graves of one’s ancestors to building one’s house. Yet it is regretful that the Japanese in the colonial era and the influx of the western culture turned it to a superstition for many modern Koreans. Thus launched was the Korea Feng-Shui Theory Association in March 2010 with aim to improve public recognition and to build academic grounds.

Nam Goong-seung, who boasts 30 years of experience in the field, has led the association as the third president since August 2014. He graduated from Kongju National University and majored in Korean literature at Hongik University followed by a master’s degree and a PhD in public administration at Chungnam National University Graduate School of Education. He served and retired as the principle of Jochiwon Women’s Middle School and as a chairman of the Korean Federation of Teachers Association Yeongi County, and an adjunct Feng-Shui professor at Konyang University for 10 years. He has taught students at Hanbat National University for 15 years and is fostering young people at Kongju National University Lifelong Education Center. He has translated a number of ancient topography books including ‘Practical Feng-Shui Secret’, ‘Yangtaek Feng-Shui’, ‘Dosun Mugam’, ‘Gamyeogyeong’, ‘Uiryonggyeong’ and ‘Gamyeonggyeong’. Nam also is serving as the chairman of the Isan Traditional Feng-Shui Study Group at the moment.

“Wise men in the olden times led a life adapting to nature and to one’s character. The western culture however encouraged Korean people to turn away from human nature and spirits but to materialism. That was why the Korea Feng-Shui Theory Association was founded and we are doing our best to make a world better place to live through our study on Feng-Shui” explains the president Nam Goong-seung of the Korea Feng-Shui Theory Association.

Building academic grounds for Feng-Shui
Nam pointed out building academic grounds for Feng-Shui and a change of the existing Feng-Shui scholars.

“I doubt how many so called Feng-Shui specialists know even about the proper meaning of Feng-Shui. The energy flows beneath the ground is affected by the wind and there is no vitality when the wine whirling around as it scatters away. For this reason, one must understand about the flow of ‘wind’ first to know property about Feng-Shui.”

A ‘dragon’ in Feng-Shui means a ‘ridge’ of a mountain. How this dragon comes down to the earth decides whether the energy gathers or scatters and this phenomenon (or the shape of the mountain) is called ‘true dragon’ often interpreted as ‘blue dragon left and white tiger right’. The true dragon shuts out the wind and gathers the energy through so called ‘Jang Poong’ – holding the wind.

“I often found the places tipped as a ‘perfect spot’ by some reputed Feng-Shui specialists not as there are despite the clients must have paid a sum of money. This is because they didn’t understand the true meaning of the ‘wind’.”

“Feng-Shui can affect not only a person’s life but a company’s success or failure and even a nation’s rise and fall. That’s why I translated those ancient books into Korean to deliver proper knowledge on the theory. In this respect, I’m feel really worried at the moment that the recent relocation of some the government organizations to other regions from Seoul is being processed without a consideration on Feng-Shui theory but only with economic feasibility.”

As one of those who wish to make a contribution to development of Korea with their own fields of expertise, Nam’s unique view and effort will bear a positive fruit to the Korean society and Korea as a whole in near future, <Power Korea> hopes.
