자연의 숲과 하늘, 그 속에서 새들은 아름다운 색과 함께 날갯짓을 한다. 마음껏 하늘을 날아오르기도 하고, 쉬어가기도 하며 자연과 어우러져 살아간다. 자연 속 새들의 모습과 자연을 느끼고 생각하는 인간의 삶을 서로 다른 시각으로 바라보며 표현하였다. 계절에 따라 변화하는 아름다운 자연의 색은 구상의 형태에서 벗어나 번지기(wet-on-wet) 기법을 응용하여 색들이 자유롭게 어우러지도록 그림 속에 담았다. 변화된 형상 속에서 보는 이로 하여금 많은 생각을 펼칠 수 있도록 자연의 색을 찾아보았다. 자연의 색 안에서 새로운 보금자리를 찾아가는 새들을 통해 작품을 바라보는 이들이 내면의 꿈과 희망을 찾아 치유되기를 바라는 마음으로 작품을 제작하였다. “새의 날개를 그린 독창적 작품 세계 구축”
은화숙 작가는 그림에 대한 꿈을 꾸며 어린 시절을 보내 왔다. 학창시절 미술부 활동을 통해 그림 대회에서 최우수상을 수상하고 미술대학을 졸업하였다. 졸업 후 고등학교 미술교사와 미술학원 원장 등 자신의 미술적 재능을 교육으로 확장시켜 미술을 향한 한 길에 열정을 쏟아 걸어왔다. 그런 그녀는 현재 전업 작가로서 자신의 길을 나아가고 있다.
은 작가의 작품은 주로 새의 날개를 그린 유화이다. 화가로서의 활동을 시작할 때부터 하늘의 구름과 나비의 날개 등 자연에서 영감을 얻어왔던 은 작가는 최근 새의 날개를 그린 그림으로 새로운 화풍을 펼치고 있다. 은 작가는 “자연을 바라보는 새와 인간의 시점은 다르다. 서로 다른 시각으로 계절에 따라 오묘히 변하는 자연의 색과 함께 저만의 시점으로 표현하고 있다”라고 자신의 작품 배경을 밝혔다. 
은 작가는 “작품 속 자연은 현실과는 다른 느낌을 주어 많은 사람들과 소통하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 저의 작품 중 ‘숲의 소리’ 시리즈는 작년 개인전 때 시리즈로 만들었던 것인데, 일부 관람객의 경우 마음의 치유가 되는 작품이라는 소감을 남겼다”라고 밝히며 자신이 작품 활동에 대하여 이야기했다.
은 작가의 작품은 은은한 멋을 품고 있는 동시에 사람의 마음을 치유하는 형상을 담아 독특한 매력으로 다가온다. 구상과 비구상의 경계에서 오는 새로운 변화에 대한 기대를 품고 있는 은 작가의 작품 세계는 지속적인 전시와 초대전 등을 통해 더욱 단단해져 왔다.

“작품을 통해 많은 사람들이 행복을 얻기 바란다”
은 작가는 현재 서초미술협회 서양화 분과위원장이자 한국미술협회, 한국여성작가회, 일원회, 자유회화회, 국제화우회 회원으로서 활발한 활동을 이어가고 있다. 또한 이화여자대학교 평생교육원에서 미술치료지도사 자격증을 취득하고 치료사로서도 많은 사람들을 만나고 있다. 유치원생을 심리치료하면서 많은 아이들을 만난 은 작가는 미술이 아이들에게 좋은 인성과 꿈을 키우는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 가능성을 발견했다고 한다.
이와 함께 은 작가는 “현재 우리나라의 중‧고등교육에서 예체능의 수업 시수가 사라지고 있다. 이는 아이들의 정서 발달에도 큰 어려움이 될 뿐 아니라 향후 미술인들의 활동에도 큰 제약이 될 수 있다”라고 이야기했다. 또한 “학원에서 그림에 대해 배울 수 있는 것은 입시만을 위한 것이고, 입시에서 요구하는 틀에 그림을 맞추다 보면 독창성이 떨어지게 된다. 그래서 자신만의 화풍을 발견하기 위해서는 더욱 많은 고민과 시도를 해야 한다. 꾸준히 작품 활동을 하고 있는 화가로서 미술을 대하는 시선이 변화되기를 바란다”라고 말하였다.
마지막으로 은 작가는 “그림이 좋아 지금까지 작품 활동을 해올 수 있었다. 앞으로도 저의 작품을 통해 많은 사람들이 행복을 얻을 수 있기 바라며, 스스로의 행복을 위해서도 더욱 열심히 작품 활동을 이어가고자 한다”라는 포부를 밝혔다. 이처럼 다양한 방면으로 국내 미술계에서 활동하고 있는 은 작가의 발자취가 더욱 많은 사람들에게 행복을 가져다 줄 수 있기를 기대한다.

Shifting nature and birds onto canvas

Birds in beautiful colors flutter their wings in forests and sky. They fly high and land on a bough of a tree to rest. I shit the birds, and our point of view on nature, onto canvas. I choose the ‘wet-on-wet’ method in order to harmonize the colors of the free birds on the canvas. And I tried to find natural colors and different forms that can encourage the viewers to find their lost dream and hope. – Artist’s note –

Eun Hwa-sook is known as a bird wings artist
Finding a great pleasure in painting pictures since childhood, it was only natural for Eun to major in arts at university and carried on her passion by working as an art teacher at high school and run a private art institute. Many years past since then and Eun now is working as a fulltime artist. 

Bird’s wings are the main theme of Eun. Eun used to find a great inspiration from nature such as the sky, clouds and butterflies and recently has paid more focus on bird’s wings. 

“Birds and we have different points of view about nature. The view changes as seasons change. My job as an artist is to reflect these different points of view according to the change through the canvas. And this is the way I communication with the viewers and my wish to deliver a sense of healing to them. ‘Sound of Forest’, the series works of my solo exhibition last year, left a strong impression on some of the viewers who kindly left a message that they had a sense of healing by appreciating the work” says Eun.

“I hope my works make people feel happy”
Eun is serving as the head of the western painting division of the Seocho Arts Association and also a member of the Korean Find Arts Association, the Korea Woman Artists Association, the Ilwon Club, the Free Painting Club and the International Artists Club. 

She obtained an art therapist certificate from Ehwa Womans University School of Continuing Education and found a great possibility to promote children’s personality and dream with the method. 

“It is worrying that the arts and physical subjects in the middle and high school curriculums are being treated as less important than other subjects. But in fact they are must needed subjects in order to development sensibility and personality. What is more worrying is that the time allocation for arts is being used as a mere tool for students to get into a university. It can be an act of destroying one’s unique style and creative thinking which are the two core values of art.”

When asked about the future plan, Eun said “I love painting and that’s what I do best. So I will keep pushing forward my creative zeal and communication with people through holding or participating in as many exhibitions as possible.”
