Classical music for all
Cho Yoon-seo, CEO of J Art / Daejin University music professor
Promoting classical music as popular as musicals and pop music

Cho Seong-Jin Cho, the Korean pianist who won the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2015, created a sensation in the Korean music market that year and after. People, whether music enthusiasts or not, were eager to line up in front of record shops to possess his newly released album at first hand. Sadly, his success does not represent all musicians in Korea. 99% of them are reportedly earning their bread and butter by teaching rather than performance.

Unlike European countries where going to a concert is one of the common entertainments of the people, many Korean musicians hold their performance as a means to showcase themselves and naturally most audiences are also their family members or acquaintances.

Violinist turned CEO Cho Yoon-seo of J Art is one who has exerted her utmost effort to bring a change to this harsh environment for many years.

She was influenced by ‘Suzuki Method’ when first stepped into the world of violin and won her first prize when she was a third year middle school student. She moved on to Ewha Womans University School of Music and obtained a PhD in Italy. She joined Aspen Music Camp during the university year and played for Guri Philharmonic Orchestra as a top performer and also gave a joint performance in Ascoli Piceno, Italy.

The reason Cho established J art last year was simple: she wished to share the charm of classical music with normal people but not only those a few who “know”. Cho points out ‘matching problem’ between the classical music and audience to explain the phenomenon that people pay for musicals and pop music while they do not for classical music.

As the solution, she is making the most of marketing strategy that can attract audience while keeping the characteristics of classical music intact in order to convince audience to also pay for classical concerts like they do for musicals and pop music instead of getting hold of a free invitation ticket.

Keeping the essence of classical music and making concerts that make audience happy

Cho is serving as the director of the Seoul Music Association. At a concert held at Olympus Hall last June, she brought a change to the existing classical repertory: she divided a part that normally takes 30 to 40 minutes into 8 separate parts with each part lasting 10 minutes in ensemble to give diversity in music forms.

It is important to break people’s prejudice that classical music is boring. To solve this problem, Cho focused on enhancing visual and acoustic elements by introducing ‘commentary’ on each piece and its background story before the performance and also ‘video images’ relevant to each piece. This raised audience’s concentration and left a strong impression as a result. The video images were made by students with deep knowledge in art at Hansei University Graduate School of Arts & Cultural Management where Cho gives lectures.

As a violinist, Cho has performed on the stage many times and she understands what audiences really want and each performer’s characteristics. And she reflected this understanding in planning concerts. She also combined violin, as the main instrument of the concert, with other instruments to create harmony and received a great response.

Cho is ambitious to open new possibilities for crossover or ensemble by expanding these advantages in order to introduce more concerts which audience can actively take part rather than seat and watch.

Crossing over music genres for better creativity and opportunity
Cho regretfully points out the fact that the number of applied music department in school is rapidly increasing while the classical music is taking a downturn. This is because most classical music graduates (99%) are facing the harsh environment of the reality the moment they leave school. All of their passion and effort in school well go to teaching or the instrument related industry rather than performance.
