[Art] Dumae Song Yeon-gwan
A master wood letter carver delivers charm of brushing and carving on wood

“I feel exhilarated by giving strokes of brush and deep carving”
Song grabbed a brush for the first time at the university calligraphy club he belonged to when he was 20 years old. He instantly fell in love with the beauty of ink and brush and boldly challenged a number of competitions. It was by chance that he came to know ‘seogak’ – wood letter carving. “I think the beauty of Korean art is at blank space and delicate tones. I was drawn to calligraphy yet felt the lack of that beauty every now and then. And this emptiness was filled when I came to know about seogak by chance” says Song. He was taught under the instruction of a traditional seogak master Dongha Jeong Geun-sik and another seogak master Baekcho Park Min-su, the latter being a master of modern seogak. The traditional and modern seogak is different in the way to handle the carving knife and in a number of other techniques and for this reason it is not easy to master both elements. Yet Song has become a seogak artist who can freely cross the border between the traditional and modern styles.

Song turns chopping boards and washboards into works of seogak
If calligraphy is done on 2 dimensional papers, seogak is done 3 dimensionally. Like it is difficult to write certain letter types with perfection on papers, it is equally difficult to carve them onto woods as they are. When it comes to modern seogak, however, the carvers have more liberty to vary, or even create, the letter types and formativeness. Song noticed on his way to work the abandoned chopping boards and washboard on the side of the road. He brought them home one day and started to carve them into works of seogak. Back then, the two boards for many Koreans could mean mother’s unconditional love and devotion to her sons and daughters and Song delivered this sentiment to his works. “My mother earned bread and butter for the family by selling red bean bread and clothes for 30 years and she now lives alone at the home town. So the boards arouse me reminiscence and I sometimes get very emotional. So the two objects for me can mean the love of family.” It is also notable that Song uses special woods of the world instead of the commonly used sturdy zelkova and birch trees. Because they are special, they cost 3 times more than the normal woods but Song willingly pays the price in order to create unique works.

Giving details to lines and curves
Song’s dexterity was well recognized by winning the grand prize at the 2016 International Wood Letter Competition and the runner-up prize at the Korea Seogak Competition. In the former competition, Song met a number of inspirational overseas seogak artists from China, Japan and Taiwan and for the latter competition he gave a special effort by using American juniper tree and carved the three sides of the wood. Writing the letter onto the juniper tree alone took 3 months. “I have to spend a certain amount of time to create a new work. I decide the meaning and the type of the letters first and then give details to the lines and curves. I can get a satisfactory work when all of these elements are nicely mixed and executed.” Meanwhile, Song is determined to push forward his creative zeal for 10 more years and then spend rest of his life in fostering talented young seogak artists. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
