Moon attends ceremony to close Kori Nuclear Power Plant 1
President Moon attended the ceremony held at Gijang County on 19 June to announce the permanent closure of the Kori Nuclear Power Plant 1 as the legal operating time of the plant finished at June 18th 12am. It was Korea’s first nuclear plant built with 587MW facilities and has been run since 1978. 230 officials and residents and environment activists attended the ceremony on the day. Moon rewarded staff of the plant for their services and said that the closure of the Kori Nuclear Power Plant 1 is the first step for Korea to go eco-friendly energy nation and also to create a new energy market.

Moon continued “Japan probably is known best for dealing with earthquakes. Yet the earthquake in 2011 that hit the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant caused 1,368 deaths. 220 trillion won ($200 billion) is expected to be needed for recovery and the death toll and the number of cancer patients affected by the radioactivity is impossible to count. This tells us that nuclear power plant are no longer a safe option nor cheap and eco-friendly. As a result, advanced countries in Europe are announcing to opt out of nuclear power plant.”

Moon then met the specialists who will carry out dismantle of the plant 1 and asked them to take safety as top priority of the process.

Moon meets tourism officials in Jeju
President Moon paid a visit to Murung Farm in Mureung-ri, Seogwipo City, Jeju on 16 June to have a luncheon with tourism officials on the island. Murung Farm is a model village enterprise that sells local agricultural products and runs tourist programs. Not only paying a visit, shaking hands, leaving as soon as possible, but Moon rolled up his sleeve to pack the products to be sent alongside the staff.

Moon said that Jeju was an island that makes him have dreams and showed his future vision of the island as a hub of eco-friendly environment, peace, human rights, regional cooperation in Asia and tourism.

Moon continued “I’m impressed by Murung Farm for being a model local enterprise to create jobs and to contribute to local economy.”

On tasting food made of seasonal ingredients with local residents, Moon added “I will do my best to turn the island to an environmental capital of North East Asia as well as a land of peace.”
