[Art] Power Interview/ Park Jeong-soo, an artist of Western painting
“Artwork in expression of inactive life and initiative spirit”
An author in endless passion based on humanistic philosophy

Since ancient times we have expressed a hopeful world of our wish into numerous paintings in order to find an idealistic world through lots of societies and legends. This means a wish for seeking after a blessed life outside the restricted reality, and also one’s own language and conversation. Like this, acts of art empower not only an ordinary thought in everyday life but also free thinking and creation by looking at the world brightly and warmly and wishing for a happy life, <In Author’s Note>

Draws attention with vigorous image and saltant work
Artist Park Jeong-soo, a senior author in Korean painting circles, has imbued souls in his work for sixty years with endless passion. His delicate and soft touches of brush much recognized in Gyeongnam area and others has greatly received attention with the work on the motif of ‘mountains and rivers,’ a crystal of a long career as artist. This includes ‘Lights of mountains and rivers,’ ‘Mountains and rivers in margin,’ ‘Pathos in margin,’ ‘Change in life,’ ‘Inactivity of nature’ etc. ‘Lights of mountains and rivers’ portrayed ‘joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure’ in each line with desire to express his inner life outside and leverage effects. As a connection of three works in the size of point 30, this begins with lines of Korea’s traditional five colors and shows the image of rising dynamically as going to the right side. Every line holding energy and enhancing a progressive phase represents the will toward coexistence of the world. ‘Pathos in margin,’ the work heavily imbued with a philosophical meaning in emphasis of space, represents ‘creation and extinction’ and can be interpreted as ‘Life without greed’ in expression of emptying relaxation and generosity. The common message for all of these works is an attempt to express ‘Korea’s humanity.’ In the beginning, artist Park engaged in representational painting with a subject matter of everything within his reach in everyday life. Nonetheless, he always had his own thoughts, never leaning toward being factual. His work convinces us of the state of skilled author who has seen all those many years and his firm and clear philosophy. “The work of art makes me feel awareness of my existence. Since art practice is creative itself like the eruption of life, it seems my passion for art will never wither away.”

Works coined out from humanistic attainments including philosophy
‘Good repute’ rising on the state of author after ranging over diverse genres

Emphasizing that “Art is an expression of truth,” artist Park says, “Something with every ounce of one’s energies put forth in complete dissolution of oneself is a good painting as it is.” Within the boundary of painting, there is no genre he didn’t touch, from watercolor, literati painting, etc. as representational painting to the current nonrepresentational painting. As time went by, his motif he wanted to express in work became clear and uncouth lines became brighter and softer in harmony through clear-cut impression of colors. Because of such a trend, he is receiving good repute from painting circles that “He is an author who enlivens the charm of nonrepresentational paintings by processing the whole picture lucidly and cleanly.”
In his artwork career, artist Park had faced a physical challenge with two times of big surgery in 1992 and 1996. For him, it was study and exercise that enabled him to recover health overcoming pain. Artist Park studied China’s humanities reflecting himself with change of the author’s awareness and he says this was the time when he had an opportunity to be immersed in work. Study of many-sided humanities, including Confucian scriptures, Taoism and Confucian ideas, helped him substantiate his career of artwork and made a perfect spiritual base for him. In addition, his wife’s consistent help was a great momentum for him. His wife, who got married to him admiring his art practice, had to suffer the same difficulty as other ordinary artist’s wife. Saying that without his wife who has always respected his opinions, his career of artwork would have been impossible, artist Park recollects, “I feel only too grateful to my wife who has always stood by me.”

Everything in daily life is a subject matter for “an educator who has exerted himself for all-round education.”
“Art is a means to express the truth and must not be reduced to show-off.”

After graduating from Jinju College of Education, artist Park was appointed to an elementary school as teacher. During his career as teacher, he received awards for leader from Korean Society of Children’s Art and Hankook Ilbo’s and Chosun Ilbo’s art contest. While steadily engaging in artwork, he tried not to lose an educator’s guiding ideology all the time. Looking back on those days, artist Park clarified “As all others, in my professional life as teacher, I was helped with artwork by the period of vacation. I lived a life without weekends for the cause of performing art. With such a long habit, I am rather constantly doing art.” Recalling the life of predecessors, artist Park says that he makes the phrase “If one is accustomed to laborious work, even god is moved.” the motto of his life.
Using his home for studio, artist Park has completed over a thousand pieces of work so far. He held thirteen times of private exhibition, starting with ‘Indabang’ located at Samun-dong, Miryang, in the autumn of 1974, followed by Jinju, Masan, Busan, Seoul, etc. in the order. His participation in group exhibition reaches 260 times. His works always receive good reviews and KNN broadcasting man in Gyeongnam area spares no eulogy on his work.
Artist Park said, “As there is a guide from Buddhist scriptures that “the heart is the mercy of Buddha, we need to control our heart and construct our world well while getting along in life. I hope to sublimate a world of coexistence with good work in the adaptive attitude, the source of life required by this time and day.”
