자유한국당, 지난 3일 신임 당대표로 홍준표 대표 선출
지난 3일 국회 헌정기념관에서 열린 자유한국당 전당대회에서 홍준표 전(前) 경남도지사가 자유한국당의 당대표로 선출됐다. 홍준표 당대표는 자유한국당 선거인단 총 218,972명 중 55,272명이 투표하였으며, 그 중 선거인단 투표에서 40,194표와 일반 국민대상 여론조사에서 11,697표를 얻어 총 51,891표, 65.74%라는 압도적인 지지를 받았다.
홍준표 당대표는 이번 투표에서 경쟁자였던 신상진 후보와 원유철 후보를 제치고 당대표에 선출되었다. 또한 당 최고위원으로는 이재만(12,83%), 김태흠(15.44%), 류여해(15.47%), 이철우(20.86%) 최고위원이 선출되었으며, 청년최고위원으로는 이재영(38.83%) 청년최고위원이 선출되었다. 한편 홍준표 당대표는 경기도 남양주시에서 감자캐기 봉사활동을 하던 중 당선 소식을 접했으며, 소식을 들은 직후 두 손을 번쩍 들어 올리며 화답했다.
같은 날 오후 홍 대표는 서울시 영등포구 자유한국당사 기자실에서 당선소감을 밝혔다. 홍 대표는 수락연설을 통해 "오늘 여러분은 당대표라는 막중한 책임을 제게 맡기셨습니다. 보수우파의 위기가 깊은 만큼, 당이 처한 상황이 어렵고 힘든 만큼, 여러분의 선택은 그 어느 때보다 신중하고 간절했습니다. (...) 언론은 무관심했고 국민은 냉담했습니다. 이것이 우리의 현실입니다. 자유한국당의 현실이고 대한민국 보수우파의 현실입니다. 그러나 우리는 해낼 것입니다. 과거에 숱한 어려움을 극복해 왔듯이 우리는 지금의 위기 또한 잘 이겨낼 것입니다"라고 언급하며 단합, 혁신, 국민, 보수우파의 가치 등을 강조했다. 이번 당선으로 인해 대선 이후 '강한 야당'을 강조해왔던 홍준표 당대표의 행보가 더욱 급물살을 탈 것으로 예측되고 있다.

자유한국당, 4일 오전 첫 번째 최고위원회의 개최해
한편 자유한국당은 홍 당대표의 당선 이후 첫 번째 최고위원회의를 당선 이튿날인 4일 개최했다. 홍준표 당대표는 "새 지도부가 들어오고 오늘이 첫 최고위원회의다. 우선 이번 주 금요일까지 당내 인사는 완료해서 당 구성을 완료하도록 하겠다. 그리고 혁신위원회도 조속하게 추진하겠다. 전원 외부 인사로 혁신위원회를 구성하고, 당 윤리위원회도 전원 외부인 중심으로 추진하도록 하겠다"라고 이야기했다.
이어 정우택 원내대표 역시 "어제 감자밭 전당대회 현장에서도 “제발 집안에서 싸우지 말라”는 말씀이 있었다. 정치의 본질은 논쟁인 만큼 국가적 아젠다나 정치현안을 놓고 논쟁할 것은 치열하게 논쟁하되, 국민의 삶이나 국가와는 아무런 관련 없는 당내계파 갈등, 권력다툼은 이제 다시 보이지 말라는 강력한 충고로 여긴다. 국민들께서 우리 당에 가장 지긋지긋하게 느끼는 것도 바로 당내 계파 분란이라는 사실을 우리는 잘 알고 있다. 이제 새 지도부 출범과 함께 이 같은 집안싸움, 계파갈등은 실질적으로 종식되어야 한다"라는 모두발언을 진행했다. 한편 이날 홍준표 당대표는 "우리는 싸우면서 건설하도록 하겠다"는 말로 당내 혁신에 수반되는 분란과 갈등을 정면 돌파할 것이라는 뜻을 내비치기도 했다.

Liberty Korea Party chose Hong as new leader
The Liberty Korea Party chose Hong Jun-pyo as the new leader of the party at the party convention held on 3 last month at the National Assembly Visitor Center. 55,272 out of all 218,972 members of the Electoral College voted on the day and Hong gained 40,194 votes plus 11,697 votes from the public survey totaling 51,891. It was a landslide victory by 65.74%. 

Also, Lee Jae-man (12.83%), Kim Tae-heum (15.44%), Ryu Yeo-Hae (15.47%) and Lee Cheol-woo (20.86%) were elected as the members of the supreme council of the party while Lee Jae-yeong (38.83%) was elected as the supreme representative of the youth council. 

Hong was digging up potatoes in Namyangju City when he received the news of his victory. He raised both of his hands sky high on hearing the news in the middle of the digging and later held a press conference at the party headquarters in Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul.

“Today, you placed a heavy responsibility on my shoulder. You made a careful and honest choice in this time of crisis we are facing. (…) The media was indifferent and the people were cold. This is the reality of us. It is the reality of the Liberty Korea Party and the reality of the Korean conservative. But we are going to make it. Like we overcame many difficulties in the past we will overcome the crisis facing us at the moment” said Hong and he emphasized on the values of consolidation, innovation, the people and the conservative. 

Hong holds a supreme council meeting
Hong held the first supreme council meeting the next day on 4 last month. Hong said in the meeting “It’s the first meeting we have after launching the new leadership. First of all, I will complete the reshuffling the personnel by Friday this week and then push forward the innovation committee in speed. All members of the innovation committee will be consisted of external personnel as well as the ethics committee.”

The floor leader Chung Woo-taik said “Hong said at the potato field yesterday ‘please at least not to fight each other between members of the party’. And I take it to mean that we can debate fiercely on national agenda and political issues but must avoid disputes over power struggle or factional conflict within the party. We know very well that the people are fed up about the factional conflict so it must end here with the launching of the new leadership.” 

Hong supported Chung by saying “We will build while fighting.”
